This plant is Decamali ( Gardenia gummifera) . The aroma and taste is close but this plant is not Hing The scientific name is Ferula assafotida.. I am a plant nursery man and 20 years back I was also told that this Decamali plant is hing. As I have been to an Agriculture college I have reference books those days. So understood. This plant is also medicinal and used as pain killer

Yes 100% correct. Asafoetida ( ferula asafoetida) - kind of resin - derived from the roots. We, the Hindustani people, use almost 90% asafoetida, the cost of which 1000 crores of rupees, imported mainly from Afghanistan and Azerbaijan though Himachal Pradesh Govt. has initiated action to grow the plant in our own country to save the unnecessary wasting of foreign exchange like importing of Hilsha fish from Bangladesh. The supplier just cut a branch and put soil around it and dispatched, after opening of packing just come in hand a simple branch with no root developed. Overall wastage of money. Helpful Report
