Virtue signalling is done by people for three reasons: To feel better about and "absolve" themselves of the stuff they did/do themselves, to use it as a shield against future allegations and to dupe people into believing them virtuous and trustworthy and thus deserving of attention, praise and (monetary) rewards.
The worst thing about these responses is that they are pre-written and only slightly augmented based on the case before going out to the public. "Growing up, the value of women as equals [...] were common themes" Is that so? Weird. They were never "common themes" in my childhood, maybe because there was never even a question about it. "The value of women as equals" wasn't something that ever even came up when I grew up, because the basic assumption that a woman is no more or less valuable than a man has always been a given where I come from. It's as basic as breathing, why would you even discuss something so elementary? Examples being that men can appeal to male bosses much better via bantering about things that both of them share as standard views in society. The rape jokes and other forms of sexual harassment towards women that were being made are exclusively given to males, as a woman can't say "I'd stick my dick in it" or other equal mentions of using male features. Additionally in environments where bosses lose professionalism, which is undisputably what happened here, males are already at an inherent advantage due to varying amount of extra ease that is having a relationship with a member of the same sex. To argue that women may use innopropriate means to reach the top isn't exactly incorrect, but to assume that men forming a relationship with a boss, or more explicitly, a boss forming an innopropriately personal relationship with an employee to where they would be seen as helping a friend out in the case of promotion isn't at least somewhat equally disingenuous would be ridiculous.

Now I can't think about it that way after JAB and as a result other people who read this article started understanding it as harassing women, because of the way JAB put it this way.
I see Bro culture as those kind of people that get weird and obnoxious as hell as soon as they're in a group of "friends" and feel empowered to become a douchebag to everyone. Add in alcohol, being noisy and invasive and you get the perfect mixture for a toxic environment for introvert people and people that'd like to keep it somewhat professional.
And you know what, I agree with both of you guys, which also goes to show Asmons point, Bro culture doesn't mean the same to everyone, to some it's chilling with the homies having a good time,, others it's getting trashed and acting like lunatics, which is why JAB referring to Bro Culture is so much bullshit.

Tbh from many vids and online talks you could see there's something up but people usually ignored it just like woman asking why women in wow are always Vic secret model etc. Even my female friend worked in one of biggest game companies and it happened to her - what can she do? If she reports it she can be fired or even more "missed" for promotion, and she was already in aaa company, she did not wanted to be blacklisted by this company or branded "problematic". This behaviour in many aaa companies were always open secret
Even as a dude in that industry, you can't do much against it if you aren't in a significant position. When you're in the trenches at junior or even mid level position, standing up against supervisors and executives is enough for not getting your contract renewed. Then you're out of a job. Similarly, game industry despite being massive in terms of profit, is still very small in terms of community. Word travels fast, and references make or break your career when starting out. Besides, usually men like Alex Afrasiabi use light jokes to see where you stand, if you aren't receptive to them, they keep you far away from that type of shit, they keep you in the dark. You just wont get invited to afterwork events, hangouts, etc. If you are at lower position, you will just slowly get ostrasized, passed over for promotions, until you either are not renewed or leave the company yourself. And you won't know that was one of the reasons for it. In the end a contributing factor is how well you get on with your seniors and leadership if you want to move up in the hierarchy. If you are receptive to the minor sexist jokes and light locker room talk, you will constantly have your boundaries tested, and you get swept up in it. Especially if the rotten individuals are all the way at the top of that hierarchy. And at a company like Blizzard, a lot of those top figures were idolized, making people a lot more receptive and willing to bend their morals in order to get approval.
@@EliteRocketBear Sorry if i sound out of touch but is it not ignoring these issues out of fear of getting fired or passed up for promotion part of what help creates this sort of culture? Sexual harrasment is still a crime and making the state get involved like it is now should have happened years ago
@@murdergnome7612 Ask yourself this: What can do you as an individual do? You have to realize that the HR team is not on your side. The third party they recommend is not on your side. The authorities often aren't on your side. That's why everyone comes out the woodwork during these public scandals, and it turns into an avalanche. The numbers provide a form of protective anonymity, and lends more weight to the voices in the choir. So many people either keep quiet in fear of retaliation, fear of not getting renewed, and a lot of them are legit kept in the dark and socially excluded from post-work gatherings where this shit happens, and they only hear rumors. Typically you don't assume people are monsters either. And sure, you can report any behaviour you see to HR, but that's really all you can do, and most of the time, it amounts to nothing. You have to remember that the game industry generally has a problem with high turnover rate. A lot of the time, people are hired on a project to project basis. And if you haven't participated in at least one full production cycle, you are still considered new. You are one step away from being a number to the leadership at a company the size of Blizzard (and Activision). So what can you do? So your voice carries literally no weight, especially not on topics like this. Usually this sort of shit breaks on social media first before any serious investigation is prompted. Because if the leadership is rotten, you literally don't have a leg to stand on. And for the state to get involved would have taken years of victims coming forward, that stuff moves slowly. They said they found these after a 2 year investigation. How many reports do you think they got to finally prompt that investigation? Because they didn't start with the first one. I think the only reason why this was kept under wraps for so long was because working at Blizzard has always been a dream job for a lot of the new talent that continuously enters the game industry. They've always been idolized, along with the leadership. Hell, a lot of the victims and bystanders still work there as well despite all this harrowing shit because they love the project and team so much. So if speaking up publically is risking losing the dreamjob you have worked so hard to get, do you honestly think you wouldn't bend and comply? Anyone who thinks they wouldn't, is a fool. So legit, don't throw shit at people who kept quiet if they knew. Everyone has people to provide for, and word travels fast in game industry. Yes, turning a blind eye to it is letting that culture fester and continue to exist. But you have to realize that that culture existed before they even set foot in the office, and they as a lone individual are powerless to actually cause any meaningful change, and they themselves feel disgusting and guilty for not acting sooner. The bystanders and people kept in the dark didn't create this culture, it was already there long before. So what you're doing is misattributing guilt, and people use that same rhetoric as an excuse to tear people down who had in reality, nothing to do with it. It's fucking easy to say as an outsider with 20/20 hindsight "you should have said something sooner" "why didn't this come out sooner" "The state should have acted sooner", when push comes to shove, you wouldn't have said anything either. These people aren't just dealing with the stress of the job, they're dealing with the stress actually living in this fucking working environment, and that's without mentioned what the victims went through. And again, normal people typically don't assume others are predatory monsters from the get go. So I actually have a lot of respect for Lore. He is one of the public faces and links between the company and the community. His job is promoting the brand, company and public image (which includes damage control). Him coming out and debunking Morhaime's statement, going against prior company statements and straight up saying "Yes, this shit happened, yes, I knew of it from colleagues" is huge. The guy also worked on WoW fancontent for years before being employed by them, he is clearly passionate about the game and franchise (altho you can see the disillusionment settle in his eyes over the Q/As he did), and he probably idolized the leadership like the rest of us did. What he did took guts. While he specifically called out Morhaime, He straight up states that Leadership knew about this and did nothing, which runs counter to both JABs and MMs statements.
@@EliteRocketBear I am not misattributing guilt as much as i am of the mind that "I as an individual has no power/say" is a detractive way of looking at things. @@butcherjsy8 You sure about that? Actually look at what second wave feminists stood for. They did a lot of good, but they were the ones that created the stigma of being man haters. They were the ones that are currently advocating anti-trans stuff because they don't want "men" in womens rest rooms. Third wave feminism, or intersectionality, is the understanding that there isn't any single identity or aspect of an individual that defines us, or how the world will perceive us, and by understanding that we can actually address the complex societal issues that make things worse for people, rather than essentialising everything and going "more women CEOS and the world will be better." I'm 6 foot 3. I have a beard. I have a deep voice, I play rugby. I'm pretty up there in terms of masculinity. There are absolutely bad actors out there, who will fit the description of what you think third wave feminists are like. But they genuinely are just that. Bad actors. Even that had a questionable monetization policy. If I'm being honest with myself Blizzard hasn't done anything truly amazing since Wrath of the Lich King. Blizzard has been on life-support and being funded completely by nostalgia for years now.

@@t.r.2283 what I'm saying homie is if you read this report or really gave a shit you'd realize that men do the same exact shit, assert their gender in order to gain promotions and opportunities that are exclusive to them.

Now i might be wrong, but i firmly believe that since the activities that has been going on is illegal that it should have come out sooner, dream job or not. Do not take me wrong, it's good that Lore called out the bullshit but this really for everyone's sake should have come out sooner. I don't blame people for not speaking up since i don't know all the details (maybe they did speak up earlier to authorities and they did nothing), i am merely trying to understand why this was taken as far as it did. You might interpret my statements as me blaming people but that is not my intention. I am grateful for your point of view though
Brack during his interview with Bobby Kotick: "I want to take this moment to talk to you about my families lord and savior Gloria Steinem" Sure, we believe you...although I think it's far more likely your conversations with Bobby revolved around profits, bonuses, investors and marketing and not once, within the hours of drinking, eating and telephone conversations did you ever mention that not focusing on gender equality is a dealbreaker for you being hired.
That was an amazing joke at the beginning, XD.
Sadly it's not a joke
"Bro culture" for me has always meant spending time with my male team mates (sports team mates) chewing the cud, banter. There are no women in the team and if any come to watch or are passing, we treat them respectfully and tone the banter down. It is rarely (if ever) sexual banter. It's mostly about our performance on the field. Good, bad, funny etc. My team are my bro's
As a team we have a culture (of teamwork and team ethic) That to us is "bro culture". Whatever JAB is on about needs a different name. Because it doesn't; mean what he thinks it means to many people.
These people are desperate to make "bro culture" mean "planning your next rape spree", they hate the idea of masculinity or men being leaders or role models in their work and communities. No serious company would spout this nonsense or hire these seething femcels who try to push it.
They just wanna make it bigger than it is by calling it a culture
"The bitch was askin' for it. What's the problem?" Says half the higher ups at Blizzard.
13:12 So true. When there was a huge scandal among Taiwan's academic institutions, they start to ask students and professors to participate in the "Ethics Education Course" before they apply projects.
The fact they are making a massive multiplayer game and need social skills classes that are kindergarten level....
They're in full damage control it's hilarious.

Asmongold: *watching Asmongold* "Man, this dude is so right on. This is so true."
It was fucking killing me when he was doing it, everything he said was spot on but I couldn't get over every "True!"
I'm very suspicious of any man that says or implies he's a feminist, Joss Whedon used to say that a lot (for example).
@@QuantumTelephone We should be "equalists".
It's a rapist's cover. Feminism and far left politics at large draw the same corruption to them as the Catholic church did at the height of its power, for the same exact reasons.
These people are all preachy predators addicted to and covetous of power.
@@candys7285 I know, it's all sanctimonious virtue signalling, they are wolves in sheep's clothing.
@@QuantumTelephone Not third wave feminism, that's more so about hating on anything masculine. Earlier feminism, sure.
@@butcherjsy8 You sure about that? Actually look at what second wave feminists stood for. They did a lot of good, but they were the ones that created the stigma of being man haters. They were the ones that are currently advocating anti-trans stuff because they don't want "men" in womens rest rooms. Third wave feminism, or intersectionality, is the understanding that there isn't any single identity or aspect of an individual that defines us, or how the world will perceive us, and by understanding that we can actually address the complex societal issues that make things worse for people, rather than essentialising everything and going "more women CEOS and the world will be better."
I'm 6 foot 3. I have a beard. I have a deep voice, I play rugby. I'm pretty up there in terms of masculinity. I have never had a single issue with someone hating me for being a man, or masculine, and I have never felt the need to ever be anything other than what I am. And I hang out with a lot of third wave feminists. They types I'd imagine you'd dislike. Dyed hair, piercings, used to have a tumblr, the whole thing. Along with a few trans people, a few quite admittedly "sjw" types, the whole smorgasbord of "the left". What you're describing is genuinely not in line with reality. There are absolutely bad actors out there, who will fit the description of what you think third wave feminists are like. But they genuinely are just that. Bad actors. And the fact that you think third wave is more man hating than second wave, kind of shows you don't really know your history of feminism, nor what feminists actually strive for.
man's pulled the "I have a black friend" card but with a feminist lol

When Asmon sees the same shirt comments and tries to hold back laughing.
California: "we are investigating these allegations"
Blizzard: "but... But... We are WOKE! You can't do this to us!"
The more the boiler-plate corporate response includes words like "diverse" and "inclusive" the more skeletons they have in their closet: prove me wrong.
Yeah the companies who actually give a shit about inclusivity don't advertise it, they just DO it and see it as normal.
Because that's the normal thing to do. It's like picking up trash, nobody feels the need to advertise it, unless you're seeking recognition for a perceived good. The average person either doesn't care or is content with knowing they did good
Also, can I just add that as a male hearing these, usually, anti-male sexual harassment spiels make me feel like it's somehow wrong & that I should be punished even though I have never, & will never, mistreat a female?
Don't get me wrong, I give 10000% support to any victims & IK males usually do this more than females, but it pisses me off he way it's worded sometimes. IDK, it seems like these people usually just default to blaming all men, like we're beasts, but have no actual interest in turning over the ones responsible

That J Allen Brack face on the thumbnail is actually how I imagined him when he wrote this message
All of those who did nothing while this was going on, they only care about their paycheck, they would allow murder to go on if it meant keeping their job.
Gloria Steinem also adhered to the mantra, "Women need men like fish need a bicycle." So. Also not a great reference for JAB to take.

Nah
Maybe I'm missing something. Asmongold talks about how Blizzard has made so many amazing games. I agree, but when was the last time Blizzard made an amazing game? IMO Every single thing Blizzard has touched for years now has been ruined. The last time I can remember Blizzard made an "amazing" game (in my case "amazing" and "popular" being completely separate) Was 2014 when they released Hearthstone. Even that had a questionable monetization policy. If I'm being honest with myself Blizzard hasn't done anything truly amazing since Wrath of the Lich King. Blizzard has been on life-support and being funded completely by nostalgia for years now.
