Just a tip for cutting bolts: When you cut those flush make sure to spritz the new end with good paint. When you cut it flush you cut off the zinc galvanizing. They will rust and leave streaks on your pretty wood work!
I was a professional fence builder for almost 6 years. I would have done a few things differently in the oraginally; but the failure here wasn't build quality. The one suggestion I would make in reference to the failure is, use better hinge. That hinge was of modest quality, the hinges I use have 3 post lags further from the edge of the wood. With one of these hinges it would have held up to much stronger winds without failure. Robert
I remember when you made this fence. I loved the design because of the partial see through. Nice job repairing it. I honestly wasn't sure how you were going to repair it.
Thanks for brandishing us! Haha I am about to start my business (At Your Service) full time next month once we get settled in our new house and I quit my day job. I'm super nervous about it because I am not a business man by any means, but after consuming hours of videos by you, Honest Lee Handyman and Mr. Fix-All, I feel quite a bit more confident! I would seriously pay you guys to let me shadow you for a few weeks, but these videos will have to suffice. Thank you for your wisdom and wherewithal to spur us newbies on.
I did side jobs on nights and weekends for a year before I quit my day job. I also had a full years salary saved up to live off of. I only made around $20 my first year full time. I did spend half of the year sailing though. If you live in a large metro area and have a professional charter about you. You will make it.
Built one a few weeks ago, when I bought the hardware kit and saw the lags that came with it , I went a few isles over and bought four inch lags. Good video, good job, great attitude!
Your great at what you do it’s obvious why you went into business for yourself! I am going into business for myself. Your videos are very helpful THANK YOU
Great philosophy around customer service! That level of professionalism and willingness to make it right is why you’re the handyman to the wealthy and make 6 figures yourself. Which you totally deserve with your commitment to excellence!
Perhaps the problem began on the strike side. Were both latch hook screws still solid in the gate? And there doesn't appear to be any door stop on the strike side. If the wind can push the gate past closed, great leverage is gained to break the hinge side off. Maybe add some 2x as door stop on the latch side that eliminates any play and beef up the latch attachment. If you can move it a little, the wind will move it a lot.
I liked the “tail light guarantee” in the stair rebuild project ...lol Clearly the customers discretion to be okay with using the band aid approach for a repair.
I swear you have to be a Brother from another Mother.....You use the same tools as I do and to top things off I just ordered and received my new John Deere hat.....too funny...Enjoy your videos and Have Liked Every one of them....Great job on the videos and your work...
I would've counter sunk nuts and washers, other than that good looking fence, I just built a shadowbox style fence in the neighborhood, best looking fence in their, complete cedar, with pecan stain. Customer said it's the best fence they've seen, and the funny part is it was my first time ever building a fence!! Keep up the GOOD work brother.
It's amazing how rare professionalism is in the skilled labor industry. Though I don't think that makes it "easy" to succeed I imagine it's not that hard to stand above the rest.
Dave thats the reason I started this business. I was a superintendent building new homes. I was the main point of contact with home buyers during and after the construction process. The people buying the houses really didn't want your traditional trades men in their home. Every house I closed the new home owner needed things done. Ceiling fans, dog doors, finishing the basement, Changing out light fixtures, painting. Easy work and good pay.
Great fix. Personally I’d have had a middle hinge. Two hinges allow for the torque twisting to occur against two pivots. Normally not a problem but that looks like a double weight gate. A third fixing would kill the twisting as the pivot would fight against two (2:1 vs 1:1). Here in the UK we don’t have to worry about hurricanes though... or the local handyman carrying 😂
Yup as a handyman i guarantee my work the same way. As long as both corporation are in business we will guarantee the work. Been in business over 30 years and still going strong. Well the business is going well but my health went down hill at 48 so i was forced to retire from the field work as i was a working President/C.E.O. but now I oversee the office work. but my kids are doing GREAT. NOTE: My Step Father was a License General Contractor that i started helping out very very young. Once i was 17 he helped me start my own handyman business that way he would sub me out to do jobs he passed on or his contractor friend would sub me out for certain jobs they didn't want to do. This Worked great.
When I first retired I had a small business for 11 years, kinda in the plumbing field. I was hired to test an assembly but used to do repairs if I did not have to put too many parts of my own for free. Mostly because it was not worth my time to contact the seller to ask for a few more dollars rather than just do the small repair and list all the things I did on the invoice. I NEVER advertised. Always word of mouth and it worked for me too. Providing good service is what people want and they will tell their friends and family about you.
I see in my area, 30 days plumbing, 90 days mechanical (fence)....My valued customers accept that "things" happen, and offer to pay regardless. And yes, sometimes, I refuse payments...but, accept a few brownies or cookies...:-)
Hello sir, what type of camera do you use? I know you’ve mentioned Go Pro before but if you could give me a link or model number that would be awesome!
I use a gopro 7 black. amzn.to/2Rhe61n I just got a new audio setup for it. But haven't tried it yet. Are you subscribed? I will show the new audio if it works out.
I had a similar issue with a gate I built. I wound up using much longer lags to go nearly all the way through the post. Been strong ever since. The bolts they give you with those hinge kits just aren't adequate.
The gate broke off like that from the hinge side first and then let go off the latch. It probably snapped at the top first and then the bottom gave way. The lagg screws pryde the wood apart causing it to fail. Holy marshmallows Batman, that's really strong wind!
I'm in a hurricane prone area also; the County wants the posts to be 4 ft on centers apart. What's your comment on that? How far apart are your posts for the fence?
Late to the party but sounds like a micro-burst. Had that happen here; broke an olive tree in front yard but gate survived. Maybe double nut the bolts before cutting off or install block column instead of wood to make sturdier (but more costly).
could you make a video about how you got into this work and learned so much things i am working as a drywall and taper and would love to learn more thing but i find it difficult to get in other fields like plumbing and electric my boss alway insist i do what i already know NEED HELP ADVICE PLEASE FROM ANYONE
I prefer gudgeon and pintle hinges for fences. The fence and the ground under it move over time. With G&P hinges a quick rotation of one side or the other adjusts the gate for height, angle and span. Also, being a deep lag, they are stout for H***. BTW, nice graphic on the truck.
I like your garantee, I have the same one, but I am a Leather Smith so mostly mine arises out of miss use. I then explaine 2 the customer why I believe it happen and repair it.✝️⚾🙃
I would want latch on inside and locked . Just incase somebody wanted to peek in back yard. Make them climb fence where I would have carpet tack strips on inside top rail. Every board I would have slipped with a 2 in brad nailer and have Brad's sticking out about an inch facing outward. Lol
Outstanding. Those customers will NEVER forget you. I live in Florida so personally I don't guarantee hurricanes, force majure it acts of God. Example: A hurricane blows down a tree, crushing that fence. No way I'd that the responsibility of the handyman.
Lifetime warranty huh? That's impressive. I'm thinking. . would some customers try to exploit that? Just curious. . Thanks again for a nice video buddy!

I think I'm going to switch to expanding foam for fence posts.
Great job using the lag bolts. It might just survive the next tornado. 👍🏼💨🌬⛈
before I saw the whole video, I thought all tread carriage bolt would be stronger. Maybe I do know what im doing. another good vid

I will never see a real hurricane here. In a real hurricane area posts every 4 feet makes sense. I put post every 8 feet with 3 rails.
Late to the party but sounds like a micro-burst. Had that happen here; broke an olive tree in front yard but gate survived. Maybe double nut the bolts before cutting off or install block column instead of wood to make sturdier (but more costly).

Hey Handyman, what kind of holster are you wearing and do you like it?
H have had this one for a few years. amzn.to/2If51k0
I feel the same way on workmanship.
I like your style treating your customers man 👍!
Ha ha--I thought you might bolt all the way through! Now the wind will pull the gate, the post, and the house off the site.
As I recall that type of fence is called a Shadow Box design.. to let air (wind) and light through...
What’s with the fans with the filters on them in the background? You have the filter on the exhaust side or intake?
Intake
What type of holster is that....barely noticeable...
If something breaks and go repair it do you charge for the repair?
I would want latch on inside and locked . Just incase somebody wanted to peek in back yard. Make them climb fence where I would have carpet tack strips on inside top rail. Every board I would have slipped with a 2 in brad nailer and have Brad's sticking out about an inch facing outward. Lol
What the heck was the drill bit extension? I want one of those. Where did you get it? BTW you da man! Keep the vids coming.
It was just a long drill bit
The bolts that come with these "gate kits" are usually too short to be useful. They need to be long enough to bite into the meat of the post.
high winds + soft knotty lumber = paychecks for us
I build all of my gates and mount the gates with through bolts. I've found my gates hold up with minimal sag if any.
Outstanding. Those customers will NEVER forget you. I live in Florida so personally I don't guarantee hurricanes, force majure it acts of God. Example: A hurricane blows down a tree, crushing that fence. No way I'd that the responsibility of the handyman.
Is there a reason you did not use a shorter bolt with a nut recessed into the wood post ?
I wanted to keep as much wood there for the strongest connection. No need to recess the nuts on a side gate.
the bolts, nuts and washers looked like regular steel. Aren't they prone to corrosion in that application?
Bet their kids were swinging on it like a ride
Lifetime warranty huh? That's impressive. I'm thinking. . would some customers try to exploit that? Just curious. . Thanks again for a nice video buddy!
Yeah I was curious about showers.
Loved the vid. One question, please? What comic character or character is that on the side of the pick up? Keep up the good work! Cheers!
