You make a good presentation of the abuse of hope. As a Christian I instead use hope as a tool to climb through present negative experiences and seasons of life; when things are going well I am not engaging hope but am instead enjoying the active living of and pursuit of my life. Thus, I hold hope in my backpack of spiritual assets, ready to take it out and use it when I need to survive; without this asset of hope available for when I need it I would be in terror when bad times come. I use hope to get me through bad times, when times are good I am not using it. Therefore having the asset of hope when needed is priceless.
I think it is human nature to hold on to life. It's the pain of dying, I think, is the fear. No one is ready to feel the pain of dying. But yeah, spending your whole life only thinking and preparing for the afterlife means you miss the present moment. Today, I live in the reality of the present. Thanks to you both, I really enjoy these conversations.
You have to look at hope and expectations from both sides. In this case, there has to be something that the god or gods get from giving us eternal life or anything like it. The simple fact is that adulation, the only thing we have to give, is useless for a god. This means that we might be hoping for a god to give us something that is infinitely bigger than ourselves in exchange for nothing.
Nobody in an afterlife will have any idea what to do apart from their time, place, and history which makes them who they are .Nobody will be the same person as you knew them And for infinite time? Yikes!
The Muslims are also hopeful of going to some eternal garden.. heaps of ladies for the men and he women do not have to be servants to men anymore. Angels to do the menial work.. Amen
I don’t think it’s cognitive dissonance that Christians have. I think we value life because that’s how we were designed. Also we trust God made us/put us here for a reason. You can still find great enjoyment, beauty and purpose being here and living this life, while having hope in a life to come. Some view it as we are building God’s kingdom in part now-that what we do here does matter-and God’s kingdom will be built in full later.

The Buhddists are confident they will return to earth ..Amen to that thought.
Living forever is not a realistic dream. Just wishful thinking. Zero evidence coming back to life in another realm. Amen
Earth does get boring. Especially sober

What does anybody have to talk with Jesus about? And billions of people resurrected so you'll never talk to him.
