  • Giant Russian 200′ Zubr hovercraft sending up a huge plume of mist as it makes an unannounced landing at a beach in Mechnikovo.
A Navy Zubr-type hovercraft can reach speeds of up to 50 mph, and usually carries missile launchers, gun mounts and mine-laying devices. Gear Patrol describes the Zubr LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushioned) as the "world's largest hovercraft." It reportedly has the ability to carry up to three tanks or 10 personnel carriers with 140 soldiers at a top speed of 40 knots (about 50 miles per hour).
A spokesperson for the Russian defence ministry was quoted in a local newspaper as saying that "docking at the beach is a normal event".
The hovercraft was reportedly undertaking a tactical mission in a military-owned area.
