The FSO wishes you a happy Star Wars Day: May the Force and the fact-based information be with you! May the data and statistics of the Federal Statistical Office be with you!
Like the Jedi, data and statistics serve democracy and social cohesion, the common good and international cooperation ‒ all in a spirit of galactic peace (and global comparability).
The FSO plays a central role in Switzerland's democratic system, which depends on the public having free access to fact-based information. In a galaxy of uncertain data…the FSO strives to share its impartial, reliable and accessible information (i.e. data and statistics) with everyone for the good of society. In a period of questionable facts, this mission is more vital than ever to ensure a level playing field for decision-making. FSO data and statistics empower society because they are internationally comparable, accessible to all and produced in a transparent way. This is the shared quest of every public office for data and statistics around the world.

Daten und Statistiken stärken die Demokratie, den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt, das Gemeinwohl, den weltweiten Frieden und die internationale Vergleichbarkeit, ganz im Sinne der Jedi-Ritter. Die Rolle des BFS für das demokratische System der Schweiz ist zentral, da der freie Zugang der Bevölkerung zu faktenbasierten Informationen einer der Grundpfeiler der Demokratie ist. In einem Universum voller Daten unterschiedlichster Qualität ist eine der Missionen des BFS, politisch unabhängige, zuverlässige sowie zugängliche Informationen zum Wohle der Gesellschaft anzubieten. In Zeiten, in denen die Verbreitung unbelegter Behauptungen zunimmt, ist es umso relevanter, dass das BFS diese Funktion wahrnimmt. Der Auftrag des BFS ist es unter anderem, Informationen, also seine Statistiken und Daten, mit allen zu teilen, so dass die gesamte Bevölkerung die gleichen Voraussetzungen für eine Entscheidungsfindung hat. Daten und Statistiken des BFS sind wertvoll für die Gesellschaft, denn sie sind international vergleichbar, für alle zugänglich und die Prozesse der Berechnungen sind nachvollziehbar sowie transparent. Dies ist die Mission, die sich jedes Daten- und Statistikamt der Welt auferlegt hat.

Les données et les statistiques renforcent la démocratie, la cohésion sociale, le bien commun, la paix dans le monde et la comparabilité internationale, conformément à l’esprit des chevaliers Jedi. L’OFS joue un rôle central dans le système démocratique suisse, car le libre accès de la population à des informations basées sur des faits est l’un des piliers de la démocratie. Dans un monde où abondent les données de qualité variable, l’OFS a notamment pour mission de fournir, pour le bien de la société, des informations qui soient fiables, accessibles et indépendantes du point de vue politique. Il est d’autant plus important qu’il assume cette fonction en cette époque où la diffusion d’affirmations non étayées ne cesse d’augmenter. Sa tâche consiste entre autres à partager des informations, à savoir ses statistiques et ses données, avec l’ensemble de la population, afin que tout le monde dispose des mêmes bases pour prendre des décisions. Les données et les statistiques de l’OFS sont précieuses pour la société: elles sont comparables au niveau international, accessibles à toutes et à tous et établies selon des méthodes compréhensibles et transparentes. Elles répondent ainsi à un objectif commun à tous les offices traitant des données et produisant des statistiques.
