My first cosplay project was also Kylo Ren, built pretty much the same way as you did here, with a few minor differences, I took the effort to pleat the whole tunic, which was awful and probably not worth it but I’m glad I did cause he wears it as an outer layer in the new movies. Anyway I’m looking to update and improve it which is why I’m here, and this will be a great help to find patterns and accurate materials I didn’t have before.

You can use the one piece voice changer mask if you planning on keep your hood on. I do that too, since it's cheaper.

That belt buckle is so easy to make, you just need to get some thick aluminum, and glue the middle and bottom layer, on top of each other, the top layer you can get a steel sheet, mark out the design, then use a power punch to punch holes before using a dremel with cutting wheels to cut them out, then you can use either some heat or spray paint to blacken it

I thought the same thing when I saw Adam suit up. I'm like why would u want all those layers when no one sees them? If u want to present different versions by peeling layers down, I would still only put on what I needed. Crazy.
I agree and that's why I'm only making the pieces that are essential and are going to be seen. The less layers the better especially at comic cons that are in the summer time.
The xcoser one is good? The one from force awakens its better than the one from last and raise. Awesome job btw

What fabric did you use for the lining of the surcoat? Trying to make my own and since yours turned out so lovely, figured I’d ask
The lining is a basic t-shirt fabric. I actually used the same fabric as the base sleeve pattern. Since the lining isn't seen too much, you can kinda use whatever fabric you want, but I'd recommend anything cheap and workable (i.e. not a stretchy slippery fabric).

The hood and cape were made from scratch. Same fabric as the big surcoat. Check out Dawn Bright on youtube for how to design and wrap the cape. As for the hood I've been considering making a separate tutorial dedicated to showing how that pattern is made and sewn together.

Explain again how did you get the pelted sleeves, did add the fabric onto a long sleeve or did you make a whole sleeve and sew it to a shirt
I made a whole new sleeve, then sewed that new pleated sleeve onto an existing shirt.

Ford we have a couple ones, I think one was from Kohl’s and the other was from Target ($10-15). We just use the cheap toys since they aren’t a focus in our photography.

just gonna say that the "ANOVOS" costume was never used in the movies as you mentioned and if you paid 170 to 200 bucks for the Black Series, my friend, you got robbed.
Guy In The Chair Props he never said it was in the movie, ANOVOS is just a screen accurate costume that Adam Savage puts on in another video. At the time of purchasing on Amazon almost two years ago the black series helmet was the price it was, now you can buy them for $80-100 depending on where you find it, score!

I think with the money put into this you might as well get a better saber and a decent helmet. There are GREAT helmets for half the price of the anovos.
