Hey there and welcome back. I'm Ganesh
from LearnEnglishLab.com and in
today's lesson we're going to talk about
have had, has had, and had had. Now many
students have come to me and said - I saw
had had in a sentence. Is that
grammatically correct or is that an
error - is that a typo?
meaning a printing error. And let me tell
you
all three of these forms are
grammatically correct and you should
learn how to use them correctly. Alright,
over here I have three sentences that
are going to help us understand these
forms
take a look at the first sentence - I have
had lunch
what a strange sounding sentence right - I
have had lunch.
well let me tell you a little secret
when you see two 'have's in a sentence
this is have, this is also have, it's just
in the past participle form - its had but
it's basically just have. So when you see
two 'have's in a sentence then the first
have and the second have have different
meanings
this first have is called a helping verb
I've written helping verb over there and
this had is called the main verb
it's called the main verb because it has
the main meaning in the sentence - this
have only shows the tense of the
sentence
so when you see have or had used as
the main verb that means that it is
being used as a shortcut for some other
word but in this case
what could that other word be? What could
be the meaning of had? Well take a look
at this list over on the side. When we
use have as the main verb in a sentence
it could mean a number of different
things - it could mean to eat like when we
talk about having breakfast or
having dinner
or it could mean to have a drink which
means just to drink something or we
could be talking about owning something
like when I say I have a car
I mean that I own a car or it could show
some relationship between people
I have a sister - that means or that shows
a brother-sister relationship or it
could talk about some kind of experience
like if I said I had difficulty or I had
trouble finding the place
that means it was difficult for me to
find the place
Now these are just some example meanings
of have. The word have has many meanings
in English so if you want to see all of
those meetings go and look at your
dictionary and find the word have and
you'll see a lot of meanings but these
are some of the more common meanings
OK let's now look at our sentence - I have
had lunch
so what could this had mean in this
sentence?
well in this sentence it means eaten
because here you see there's the word
lunch
so this sentence just means "I have eaten
lunch."
we are using had as the shortcut for
eaten
OK but what about this have? Well as I
told you before that have shows the
tense of the sentence. To understand that
read the sentence without the have
I had lunch. I had lunch means I ate
lunch. When did I have lunch?
maybe I had lunch yesterday or the day
before - any time in the past and
that has no connection to the present.
But when we use this have it shows that
my eating lunch has some connection to
the present. For example if a friend
comes to me and asks "Hey do you want to
have lunch with me?" and I don't want to
have lunch because my lunch is already
finished
i would say "Oh I have had lunch"
Thank you very much. So this have shows
that I just ate lunch so it shows some
connection to the present
So you see this have shows the tense and
this had means eaten so they're
completely different functions or
purposes
Alright with this knowledge let's now
look at the second sentence - He has had
four jobs in two years
once again we're going to separate the
two 'have's
this is the helping verb and this is the
main verb. And the meaning of the main
verb here is worked so "He has worked four
jobs in two years" is what it means
So once again had is being used as a
shortcut for worked
What about this has? Well this is just
the same as this have over here but we
are saying has because the subject is he
if the subject is he, she, or it
we say has. If the subject is I, you,
we or they we use have. So if the
subject here were I, this would be have
I have had four jobs in two years
but since it's he, it's has and once again
the tense here is the present perfect
tense and this 'has' shows some connection
to the present
Many of us have no idea that a smart phone is enough to learn English language by the help of some good teachers. Really from my heart I thank all of them
Never seen a teacher explaining with this much details. You are a rare jewel. You have great skills man. Very good explaination on topic. Just brilliant.

@@LearnEnglishLab sir what is the difference between ‘I had my dinner.’ and ‘I had had my dinner.’
@@albertodelrio5966 1) I had lunch or I ate lunch ( simple past) though latter sentence sounds weird therefore we write it as the former sentence.
2) I had had lunch ( past perfect)

Hello there, I am a Malaysian chinese. I had been confused with the usage of double have before this until I met you. A great salute to you for being able to get me figured out what was the real function and usage of this particular tricky grammar game..... Tons of applause and appreciation. Well done, sir .
Glad to hear you found the lesson helpful.
Excellent teaching.. No confusion... No boring repetition.... Good job.... 👍
This is one of those things you learn subconsciously as a native speaker. Most people couldn't explain it well if you asked why they said that in that way.
Kudos to you! You are probably teaching native speakers why they do that, too.
I have no words to praise your excellence..... your way of teaching is so simple and expressive that there is no need to stress your mind to learn . Everything comes on its own...superb Sir.
I have never seen a teacher like you before.

I've just had pizza (Eaten)
I just can't say thank you enough for your timely and thorough lessons.
Cleared doubts which I have had since last year.
My name is Baneet and please make a video on "Degree of Comparison".
Hi Baneet, have a look at my lesson on *ADJECTIVES:* goo.gl/QstjdJ :)
e.g.
1. He is sneezing again so I think he has had a cold.
2. He had had the cake before I reached.
3. They already had had the cake by the time I reached.
4. I have had four flats across India in last 5 years.
Ganesh sir... Let me know if they all are correct or not..
They are all grammatically correct, but a couple of suggestions:
(1) "He keeps sneezing" is better
(2&3) It's better to say "had eaten" here because you want to focus on the fact that the cake is gone. But "had had" is also correct.
simply if we write . I have four flats across india in last 5 years. Then what is a mistake
Should it be He has had the cake before I reached?
Agent Paper no.. It must be had had only
deepak joshi , it is only says that u have flat but says nothing about from when ,
The upper Sentence talks completely about things have done
Thnks
Brilliant explanation! Thank you!
I must say you are the best teacher in the world. Brilliant explanation. Sir. Thanks.
"If I had had only one dad, I would have had to accept or reject his advice." Sir kindly explain this.
can we make questions by shifting first have/has/had in the starting of the sentences as we do with others ?
Can you give me an example of that?
Learn English Lab for example " Have you Had Dinner ?" is it correct or not?
OK, I get it now. Yes, that's correct - that is how you make questions with these: "Have you had dinner?", "Has he/she had dinner?" etc. :)
Thanks a lot for guiding me 😊
You're welcome :)
You are really teaching better than many other native English teachers...
Your videos cleared most of my doubts..you are great!!
Awesome video.
Thanks a lot. ☺
And I've a question : Can't we use, " I have eaten my lunch. "
In spite of, " I have had lunch. "
Or both can be used interchangeably?
My question aswell pls reply .
Yeah you can use I have eaten my lunch have had /has had/ had had is used to shorten the sentence which native speaker use and now it became common
Sir please make video on tenses also
Hi Srinivas, I'm in the process of making lessons on tenses :)
Thank you sir
Thank you so much
Thank you for your specific explanation
I had a problem with this topic but it is now clear.Thank you Sir.
when sandra arrived everyone have had dinner...is this sentence not correct?..what does this indicate about the time
That sentence is not correct. If you're talking purely about the past, you cannot use 'have had'. We use 'have had' when there is some connection to the present. Ex: A: "Do you want to have lunch with me?" B: "No thanks, I have had lunch." - The connection to the present is that I just ate lunch so I don't want to eat now.
thnku sir it was helpful for me to understand but i have a query sm1 told me that u have to use had had when there is no verb in the sentence what does that mean? could u plz make understand of it?
Hi Ritu, I'm glad to hear the lesson was helpful. I have not heard of the rule you mention, sorry.
that's ok ..sir need not to be sry but i hv sm confusion i am still not understanding the had had concept the has had and have had concept is clear but had had has some more issues and i dont know when to use had had in a sentence just make me clear that...and thnkuu😊
Hi Ritu, 'had had' is in the past perfect tense. Take this example:
(1) "When I reached the train station, the train had already left." - 'had already left' shows that this happened first (that's the function of 'had' here). So it means the train left, then I reached the station. So when I say:
(2) "When I got home, everyone had already eaten dinner." - it means everyone ate dinner first (we know this is the first action because there's a 'had' before it), then I arrived. But instead of 'eaten', I can use 'had' if I want:
(3) "When I got home, everyone had already had dinner." - it's the exact same meaning as the previous sentence. I can remove 'already' because it is optional. So I can also say:
(4) "When I got home, everyone had had dinner." - this is also correct. If you are still finding this confusing, let me know what is difficult, and I will try to clarify it :)
thanks very much sir 😊 it has been cleared 😊 thnku once again for solving my issue thnku😊 u r a helpful guider coz u solve each and evry person's querry😊 ty again🤗
You're welcome, Ritu. It's good to know that your confusion has been cleared up :)
you did such a great job in explaining this. now this is clear to me. i love the timeline, it really helps!! thank you!!
Thanks Sir for explaining!
Hi, really nice videos!
i Have a question, if a just say "I had Lunch', "He had four jobs in two year", is it correct?
Thank you =)
Hi Giovanna, I'm glad to hear you like the videos. Both of those sentences are correct but they are finished events in the past. They have no connection to the present. For example:
1. (a) Imagine it's 1.30 pm. You ask me "Do you want to have lunch with me?" I answer "No, thank you. I have had lunch." - means my lunch is finished, so I don't want to eat now.
(b) Imagine it's 5.00 pm. You ask me "Did you have lunch today?" I answer "Yes, I had lunch at 1." - there's no connection to the present here.
2. (a) "He has had four jobs in two years." This means, between 2015-2017, he has had four jobs.
(b) "He had four jobs in two years." - We don't know the time period, but this is sometime in the past; maybe 1995-1997, 2010-2012 etc.
“Communities in Thailand and Indonesia had had no warning of the tsunami” I don’t get it, please explain
It means that there is no warning (before it happened) of the Tsunami, and the Tsunami already happened.
Im learning too.. so others please correct me.
In d others way u could say " both countries didn't have any warning of d tsunami"
It means communities in Thailand and Indonesia had got no warning of the tsunami.
First "had" shows tense of the sentence that event happened in past.
Second "had" shows possession..like i got no information or i had no information.
I hope it will help u a lil bit in understanding the concept.
this was excellent - very very clear explanation. I have finally understood the use of "have had" and "had had". Thank you @learn English lab
Thanks a lot sir. You are a real educator.
i have had 7 years of experience in ICU.is it correct when i mention in the biodata????
2. i have had a car .what does it mean????
1) With experience, we usually say 'have experience', so "I have seven years' experience in the ICU."
2) This sentence sounds a little unnatural. But if you say "I've had three cars in the past six years." - it means you have owned three cars in that time period.
Learn English Lab sir i have had 6 cars in the past 6years means what????? i dont have anything right now
It's difficult to say, but at the very least it means that you don't have some of the cars. Maybe you don't have any of them or you only have one of them now. For example, if a friend says you know nothing about cars, you might say "I've had six cars in the past six years, so shut up!" - meaning that you have owned many cars so you know a lot about them!
Learn English Lab and I have had six cars on the past 6 six years means.. Still I am having one of them aise bhi hota Hai na sir
Just watched you video first time , i was not clear about those type of sentences but now all cleared , thank you so much and the way you do explain things are amazing and i am going to watch your all video's today.
