GREAT footage!! Utterly stunning, WOW!!!!.... Just reducing a bit the speed: 18,060 feet long, = 5,504 meters. 5,504 meters passed by in 254 seconds (from 0:15 to 4:29), = 21.67 metrs/sec. 21.67 meters/sec. = 78 kilometers/hour, 78 Km./hour = 48.47 mph., speed in that segment. Greetings from Italy.

You messed up somewhere because I've seen numerous 60 MPH trains up close and this is definitely at very least 56-58 MPH. I can assure you it is not going 48 MPH.

Man does this bring back memories of when I worked in Compton CA and would drive Delamo Blvd and get caught at the tracks on Santa Fa Ave sometimes we had to wait for three trains.

Being Canadian.. DPUs are common here in Canada and seeing 3 sets of DPUs too is rare.. but they show up from time & time again.. however never seen double sets of DPUS.. amazing catch slugs!

I would hate to be the non-railfan stuck at a grade crossing while this beast is going up-grade! Awesome awesome awesome video, I can't believe that. 60MPH and it takes 4 minutes to pass. Probably near brand new. They were still shiny. Yellow is an interesting color. It can be very dirty, almost completely covered, and the mind still percieves it as yellow.
I live near a NS main. You should see what a shit RR they run. Filthy engines. Haven't see a clean one in years. Graffiti on every car (that really not their fault can't be helped) reflects on them makes their RR looks terrible. I hear one goin by now 4am

If only the experimenters could see it all now: Locomotives dispersed all through the train being remotely controlled from the one lead engine, Containers that are transferable from flatcars to flatbeds on trucks (Even the U. S. Mail is containerized!!); and, contrary to appearances and popular belief, this is actually more economical than just using one mode of transport alone--trains to carry the containers over the long haul while trucks to make the shorter runs and drop off at more precise locations. Aah, the wonders of science and technology and logistics.
Back in the late seventies we would hang out at Pomona SP and the Union Pacific across the way flying through town with DD40s SD40-2s and DD40s lash together. And fast?
Westbound for Long Beach Harbor. You would probably be surprised at how many of those containers are empty. A few may contain raw materials, such as wood for manufacture of furniture in China. There are likely small scatterings of plastic and paper loads for recycling but the majority would be empty.

Not that bad for North American couplers and drawbars because of distributed power. The distributed power actually puts some of the train in buff. AAR type E and F couplers are rated around 350,000 pounds of draw or buff. A good casting might get up to 500k pounds. This is about equal to the maximum tractive effort of three 6 axle locomotives. The knuckle is the weakest part because it's relatively easy to change.
Excellent video. Just shows what you can do with 1: A 20-foot+ loading gauge, 2: a big country, and 3: a railway company willing to experiment. Was this perhaps a try at comparing costs of moving 1200 TEUs between Gulf and California via rail, against via ship through Panama? If so, I'd love to see the financial analysis.
The result will be that many locomotive drivers loose their jobs and as you may know: Gigantic Trains/Ships/Plains etc. etc. will get - in case- gigantic accidents. All for the money…

Happens almost daily now through Coal City, IL. BNSF three or so Pumpkins on the headend a couple in the middle and one or two on the rear end.

Back in the 60's it took a boxcar to hold the electronics for each group of locomotives. Now it's all in an electrical cabinet in the cab.

5 Minutes is short. Wait until you have to wait 15 minutes for a 150 car coal unit train to crawl by at 20mph while heading uphill.
In Germany you have to wait 5 minutes before the train arrives..:-). The Gates close too early. But the train it is very short.
They need more engines to make it up Cajon Pass...25 mph speed limit.

If these are mostly loads about 15,000 to 17,000 tons. The containers themselves are limited to about 20 tons each for road transport.
