Machinations.io with Unity integration 'thumbs up'!!
Cool! Yeah I am gonna do it I think
Id love a video on machinations!
Yeah I think I’m gonna do one, need to do some research
Just added them to my Kindle wishlist.
Three other game design books I loved reading:
* The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses (Jesse Schell)
* Theory of Fun for Game Design (Raph Koster ) (mentioned in the video)
* Casual Game Design: Designing Play for the Gamer in ALL of Us (Gregory Trefry)
Yes I love Theory of Fun as well, it’s great. I haven’t read Schells book but I should given we share a last name 🧐
@@ThousandAnt Yeah, I love A Book of Lenses!! It's really well written and gets you in the habit of asking yourself really important questions. It also references some really interesting material outside of games like the work of Christopher Alexander.
My man Matt wearin a bulletproof vest, just in case the book recommendations turn out to be controversial.
Hahaha yes 😂
What the heck is with that? :D
@@ZoidbergForPresident just having fun :) It's actually a chest rig by Alyx
Really cool video! This is inspiring me to check out machinations. I wanted to add another book that I found very interesting. Its called "Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design". Long title but its a great book. It leans more towards RPG/adventure type games but its also useful for other genres. The author breaks down concepts like different types of enemies, systems, level design, etc very well and has funny drawings to illustrate them as well. The author, Scott Rogers, was the game designer for Darksiders 1 & 2.
Thanks! Yeah I actually read that one, it’s a nice holistic view, as you say more oriented on a more specific type of game
I can highly vouch for the third book, "Advanced Game Design: A Systems Approach", for its focus not only on systems thinking as TA mentions, but also for its detailed treatment of design documentation. I'm getting a lot of mileage out of it for this purpose and my designs are tremendously improved because of it.
Ah glad to hear it!
Would love to see a video on Machinations! I'll be following along for the day it is released. Seems like an important, undervalued tool that can improve game design as a whole
Yeah it’s really powerful I think. Thanks for your comment!
Great video! Thank you for sharing :)
Haven't heard of any of these books and I've thrown each one on my wish list.
Also props for admitting the struggle of jumping into gam dev/design and getting TOTALLY lost. It's so real and hard to admit sometimes after years of self-guided education and time spent.
Thanks for the book recommends, I've been thinking I need to learning in this area.
Wow! Thanks a lot for the selection! I am a game designer myself and was looking for some good reads!
Awesome! Happy to help.
Thank you. It is very useful. Was looking for a good read for a long time.
Glad to hear it!
Great video, gonna add these books to my list for casual reading. Thanks 👍 Subbed
Glad to hear it!
This the first game design book top whiteout "The Art of Game Design".
I’d love to see a video on machination.io!
Thanks! I think I'm gonna do it, just need to do some more research.
Good recommendations from the man in stylish tactical camo and a bullet vest xD
Haha thank you 😎
Love this channel... keep the great content coming guys...
❤️
Cool Matt, thank you for the books you suggested! Could this become a series?
Greate review, (I'm subscribing) I'll be looking at the Michael Sellers and Anna Anthropy books. I want to say something about copying and iterating on games, that thing you talked about in the begining of the video, I strongly belive there's no completly new inventions, all that humans do, and all creativity really is, is merging different concepts that already exists in order to come up with something new. So copying is just lazy craftmanship, but it isn't too far from innovation, it just need some extra steps. Would really love to hear what others think of this.
I think copying is a totally valid approach to get to something new. Small steps.
This was painfully relatable.
The struggle is real lol 😝
Ah I had sooo many ideas for fun games... But game design, game feel, etc... Usch. That's another story.
Can't wait for your robot mmo :)
Thanks! Robot MMO coming in 472727392916 years :)
Thanks, I might check some of those books out. I wanted to recommend a theory of fun(though it is a bit pretentious at the final chapters) but since you mentioned Koster I assume you already read it. Also what is that around your neck Matt?
I did enjoy Theory of Fun for sure. I’m wearing a Chest Rig by 1017-ALYX-9SM 😎
Tyy
Why the hunter attire?
Just having fun :)
Hi
