Almost a year later and this drastically helped my computer. I know some of them were obvious fixes but other than that they gave me reminders of shit I forgot.
Could also be a hardware problem. Many are not aware that a bad MB to LCD Ribbon connector on a laptop can cause the processor to run at very slow speeds. For example instead of the 3.5ghz it should run at 1ghz plus show a heavy load when using a simple application.

With your last point in the description about order to upgrade hardware basically correct but with a caveat, that being know your workflow requirements. If your workload is GPU intensive then upgrading memory or CPU might not achieve very much. For the not too techy inclined this might not be particularly easy to do but a little research is worth the effort when spending hundreds of dollars. With regards to ram you can leave a lot of performance on the table if the memory clock speeds are not set properly. DDR4 runs at either 2133mHz or 2400mHz out of the box but many sticks of ram are designed to run at higher speeds. You can use task manager on the performance tab it will show you what speed the ram is running at and compare this with the label on the ram itself. If they match then great if not you will need to dig into the Bios to set this at the proper rate. If you are uncomfortable doing this ask a friend and watch over their shoulder as it is quite easy but it looks very complicated.
@@kylesinko Thank you, the biggest issue for most non techy but need to use tech people is finding relevant information for them as most media, UA-cam included has a tendency to focus either on gaming or be very deep dive in nature. The two channels I look for good solid information backed up with performance metrics and cost consideration analysis are Gamers Nexus (the host is nick-named Tech Jesus for a reason) and Hardware Unboxed. Whilst both do use games for benchmarking amongst other metrics they are excellent sources of solid basic information. I am sure there are many others too but those are the ones I go to first.
responding to 17:30 Actually, that is not necessarily true. This is because Windows Defender Anti-Virus, (Windows Security) will look for and find viruses if your computer has been fully updated, and the applications have been updated. Some of the patches that Microsoft pushes are updates to Windows Defender so that it can look for evidence of viruses etc.
That's true, I've found that anti-virus software can find threats that Windows Security does not. However, I'm actually only running Windows Security now as most anti-virus software can take too many resources from your computer and actually slow it down. I generally only install it when I think I may have a threat and then uninstall it after scanning/removing threats.
