Union Pacific 3985

- 3985 underwent necessary repairs in 2008. Then on Sept 3, 2010 the Challenger emerged from the Steam shops for some testing with the Centennial DDA40X.
In September 2010, No. 3985 was selected to pull the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus Train from Cheyenne to Denver, Colorado, where the circus held a special performance to celebrate P.T. Barnum's birthday.
The locomotive last ran in October 2010. In need of repairs, it was then stored in Cheyenne, where it was placed second in line behind Union Pacific 4014 in the restoration order. On February 26, 2015, Union Pacific senior manager of Heritage Operations Ed Dickens Jr. announced that UP 3985 will be returned to excursion service in 2021 or 2022.[citation needed] The work on UP 4014 is slated for completion in 2019, after which the restoration of UP 3985 will begin. - wikipedia
If you can watch this and not be moved by the beauty of this locomotive, then you have no soul.
Well said my friend
thats kinda rude considering people have opinions
@@shreddedpaper9237 You obviously must not cast a shadow in sunlight.
Dung Trumpet im not really sure by what you're saying but what i was saying is that you can't just jump to conclusions about people and their beings. also i don't understand what this has to do with me not showing myself in the sunlight
It is a most impressive sight to see. I'm fairly certain that if I ever get to see one of these steam giants (3985, 844, or 4014) up close and in action, it'll take at least a week for my smile to turn down in the slightest.
The fact that you can turn water into 180,000 pounds of torque is mind blowing.
I pray that Union Pacific allow 4014 and 3985 double-head when 3985 is operable again. That would be quite the sight to see...
they probably will at some point
Yes! To big behimouths pulling side by side!

Too much Pollution
1945joshuaruiz - It isn’t really. Two steam engines double heading, even ones as big as Challenger and Big Boy, is an extreme rarity and as either only pollute as much as a city block’s worth of wood-burning stoves; it really isn’t too bad for a rare excursion once every couple of years.
@@1945joshuaruiz you do realise they burn fuel oil cleaner than deisels right?
oh boy how awesome will that be to see big boy and challenger double heading? :D
that would be nice
Maybe if UP decided to make those locos pull a monster of a freight train like 250-300 cars or something crazy like that. Lol.
would be nice to see a triple header 844 3985 4014 but that wont be happening for a LONG time as 3985 is currently dead cold
The day we see the dynamic duo double-heading will be the day I could die :)
I thought it would be cool if they had them race down the triple track in Nebraska. Seeing all three go through Buttermilk Curve would probably be an overload for me
Soon big boy will be done and 3985 restoration can begin!!
i thought 3985 was always running guess i was wrong
TheMeme Genarator 3985 has severe boiler cracking and hasn’t been gunning for the last few years
That will be awrsome
I can not understand what happened to this locomotive and why they want to restore the big boy
@@joaoricardoaraujogranzoto3050
Challenger has boiler damage.
I was two years old when Union Pacific 3985 last ran. Man, I wish I could have seen it that time. But at least it's being restored by Railroading Heritage of Midwest America.
I think that it is so great to see the old steam engines on the rails again.
worknites agreed
Its not restored yet
Maybe my dream steam move could become reality. 4014 on the lead of loaded coal cars, 3985 about 2/3's the way back, and 844 shoving on the rear
Big cheeze I doubt that will ever happen. The coal trains UP run are 15 to 20000 tons. The grades that these trains are operated on would exceed the tonnage ratings of all three steam locomotives, plus their braking systems would be totally inadequate for such trains.
Imo it would be awesome to see 4014 pulling a string of restored shermans and ww2 trucks
Haha nice try. The 4014 has enough torque to compare to about 3 modern diesels, if not more.
Main issue would be if the wagons are ECP braked, installing the loco equipment for that would hardly be worth the effort. If the train is conventionally braked (automatic only), then if the compressor supply was an issue, a diesel tucked in behind the front steam just providing extra compressor capacity would help.
All speculation of course!
Boy wouldnt i love to see all 3 pulling a train together.
My first UA-cam videos were of 3985 in St.Paul in the fall of 2008. One video in which it blew a lot of steam they blew the whistle and it echoed through out the valley. It’s really cool to play through a good sound system.
I like that they used the dynamic braking on #6936 to simulate a load. Ingenious! (corrected erroneous loco number)
63fenderjazzbass This is something the railroads have done for years.
63fenderjazzbass you mean 6936
@@ironhorsemedia2881 Right you are! Thanks!
I chalk up flubs like this to Cerebral Flatus. heheh
@@tulyar1043 I'm very familiar with the load testing of diesel-electric locomotives. I worked for several years in the test shed at the Juniata locomotive shops and we used resistive dummy loads connected to the output of the main generators and alternators. I wasn't aware of the use of a diesel-electric locomotive with dynamic breaking to load test steam locomotives until I saw this video. Quite ingenious I say!
63fenderjazzbass heheh it’s fine
At least the UP and old SP had the sense to keep them around, the others sure didn't.
@Anthony Christmas Its Norfolk, not Northfolk, the other engine you can't remember is 1218. NS didn't rent either of them, they owned them till they donated them to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, VA around 2013 I believe.
Like the cab forwards?
These endearing trains are American heritage at some of its very best! Breathtaking, moving and nostalgic!♥🚂
My dream steam team would be to have 765, 844, 4449, 3985, 611, and 4014 all together in a group photo in real life
That would be so cool
I'd pay good money to see 1218 3985 and 4014 in a single place
I think that's an utopia
But there's Trainz/Train Simulator for ya
You forgot 1218
@@chrisjohnson4666 never going to happen, 3985 has been retired, there is no plans to return 1218 to steam. Furthermore NS has cut ties to any steam program.
@What a fine engine to see, and what a beautiful whistle. I''m amazed at the tight curve it negotiates at the beginning of the video. Thanks.
thats why theyre maded articulated, to negotiating the tight curves
Love how the whistle of 3985 echos through the yard
So happy that Union Pacific is restoring all these incredible old steam engines. I've been lucky enough to see all 3 - Challenger, Big Boy, and No. 844 and I'll go to see them again every chance I get. I just saw Big Boy today and it was an amazing event, even on a weekday half the city came out to watch the big moose go through. It was great to be able to spend a day with my dad to go see it.
One day I can check big boy 4014 and challenger 3985 double heading off my bucket list thank you Ed dickens, you joining the steam program was gods answer to the steam world and us railfans!
3985 chugging along with 6936! That's awesome! Challenger with the Centennial....love it!
She has a fierce kind of beauty. At times she reminds me of a volcano with all that smoke spilling out of her stacks. That was one of things that made steam impressive to me when I was a kid.
THAT IS BEAUTIFUL ! MY DAD WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT IN PERSON ! HE WAS 42 YRS. ON THE RAILROAD ! G.N. B.N . IT WAS HIS LIFE ! AND OURS TO.😎🏁
Listen to it! That's how trains are supposed to sound.
If I could choose between a ride on the Challenger or in a Bugatti Chiron for any day I wish...I would go for the Challenger!
No doubt about it.
To think that the car is doing around 1500 Hp is incredible but this old beast is doing 5000 Hp is just...There are no words to describe that fact.
Also...The whole locomotive is almost as big as the apartment I live in....Now THAT is impressive.
its the torque factor that impresses me.
@@CarlJohnson-km8zr Everything about it is impressive. :D
Love that whistle.
I absolutely love that whistle. It definitely makes Challenger sound even more powerful.
Interesting that at 4:43 both sets of drivers were in perfect unison giving an almost 'conventional' exhaust beat. On the second pass you could hear all the individual slightly out of phase exhaust pulses. No chance on the third as a double stack was in the way!
Simon Chaddock it's that classic " I think I can" cadence!
Simple articulates can sometimes get out of sync, but will eventually come together.
@@southwestvirginiarailfan729 I can't see any reason why two sets of independent drivers would get in sync other than by pure chance which is why I originally commented.
@@simonchaddock4274 believe it or not, as the train speeds up , they will eventually fall into synch, via slight wheel spin, or balance of steam through the system, and valve gear, it's just how physics works in nature and naturally balances things out, one engine (driver) out of phase with the other will push a little harder, as they are in equal and simply admit a little more steam to balance the load, as the valve opens a touch longer.. eventually after many many cycles it balances it self out.. even aircraft engines will eventually balance through airframe vibration, though the pilot has a prop synch and power levers to to do this more efficiently.. the train has the track as the equalizing force, it's constant, solid thing the wheels bite into and transmit vibration back to the cylinder s , and eventually naturally let things come into phase... once it's rolling fast enough, the faster pulses, and lack of steam pressure opposing forces in the drive line, ( less steam per stroke at speed).. it balances out nicely..
all the wheels , and fittings are made to run at about 55 to 75 mph, and it;'s all engineered to balance out and run smooth at this speed, or in the range anyways.. a good , experienced engineer will be able to keep her in phase just by subtle feel, and fire the engine enough to keep it there, through vibrations he feel through the foot plate, his bum on the seat, and feedback through the throttle ..plus flu gas color, and a million other things over many conditions.. you feel steam loco's to drive em, it's why the drivers say they are alive.. either way, the engines balance each other out through track forces on the wheels, cool how nature sorts things out that way..
@@planegaper I can see no logical reason why they should naturally fall into sync. The two sets of valve gear are entirely independent and the weight on each driver set is not identical so any power pulse slippage creep would likely be different. There are not many videos of them actually working but in the " The Last of the Giants part II" the drivers of a Big Boy pulling a long freight are completely out of sync.
Beautiful

This is a joy, Skip.
I’ve always loved 3985. I hope she comes back soon. Until then I’ll be waiting for her to come back.
Glad to see a Centennial getting some love too. They are still in service but they all look neglected and unkempt. And while not as popular among rail fans, Centennials are the kings of diesel locomotives.
I loved seeing 3985 when it came through Pocatello.
My wife and I saw 3985 on an excursion possibly 2008, 3985 had come out of Sacramento heading to Dunsmuir...sure hope to keep apraised of any possible further excursions, it was luck we read of it in our local paper only the day before...
It's nice to see the Big boy running with out being pulled.
Thats a challenger 4-6-6-4, big boy is a 4-8-8-4
It is good that there are a number of videos of Union Pacific 3985 Challenger that can be enjoyed. Especially since the official decision was made not to rebuild UP 3985 after UP 4014 Big Boy was restored.
Can't wait to see this locomotive in full operation it would be my first time ever seeing this beautiful locomotive in person but if Union Pacific could do a triple header that would be a sight to see
Nice to See that they pulled 6936 out of the round house too.
UP 3985 will not return in 2021 or 2022 as Ed Dickens has said now that the unit is officially retired.
Why is it retired
Whats cool to me is that DDA40X is here & pushing one of the biggest steam engines while its the biggest diesel locomotive around!
Nice to see anyway :)
This is an AWESOME video.. because it shows them using the DDA40X as a load... Its neat that you can hear the dynamic brake fans running on the pass when they go by the double-stack train... and you can hear the stack talk of the 3985 under load.
NICE!!
I went looking for videos of test runs, because I noticed they didn't seem to be pushing 4014 very hard in her "shake down" runs... and I tend to wonder if there are still some mechanical issues that they are being gentle with her about.
It’s such a shame that I never got to see 3985, I mean, I was only 5 when this video was filmed.
I miss seeing footage of UP 3985 in operation, hopefully within the next 5-10 years this locomotive will be restored back to operational order and be back in service once again. With the 3985 out of operation it is great that big boy 4014 was added back to UP special heritage fleet roster back in 2019.
I know that the diesel is there for a reason, but I'd like to see 3985 running on it's own. It would look more natural in my opinion.
The smoke gives it authenticity and excitement.
What I would t give to ride on 4014 when it’s done 3985 too. What an experience that would be. I pray they will give rides on the Big Boy.
That challenger really started to roll coal while going under that traffic bridge.
I wonder if the operator intended to do that?

OMG .. what a beautiful
Behind the Challenger is Centennial #6936!
1959 It happened to Jane. The movie with Doris Day & Jack Lemmon.
My dream: Doubleheader with 3985 and 4014 WITHOUT diesel helper!!
What is it about UP's operating steamers that makes their Hancock 3 chimes sound so good? Is it the placement on the smokebox/behind the stack? The type of steam they use? Something else? They have this really melodic quality to them that I find often gets lost on most Hancocks, the one in my mind currently being N&W 611. It's genuinely quite pleasing to listen to.
Such a shame 3985 is rotting away. I wanna purchase her and restore her to operation.
They should do a test run with 3985 once they finish working on her. Like they did with the big boy
Once #3985 is repaired do you think it'll work alongside #4014? I think #844 would be due for a maintenance check after #3985 is done. However by then #3985 will be demoted to second largest operating steam locomotive in the world because by then #4014 will dethrone it because the big boy is bigger than the Challenger. Both are monsters for sure and they look similar but the big boy is longer which in turn makes it bigger but the UP stream program should be proud to have living examples of the 4-8-8-4, 4-6-6-4, and 4-8-4 in their fleet
My guess is that 3985 will get run more than the 4014 after she comes out of the shop. She is lighter than 4014, and I think can technically navigate tighter curves than either 844 or 4014; being that she has less wheels on her drivers than both.
Katerina Kittycat the 844 will not be due for the 1472 day (15 years) inspection until 2031 as the last was completed in 2016. There is no way the 844 will complete 1472 service days before that time period. But like last time, unforeseen circumstances can be found and need to be addressed.
@@railsrust UP has already discussed the down side of running 4014. You're pretty much on.

That's the problem, times aren't really that tough. They brought in some head hunters from other railroads. They are changing the way the road is operated, longer trains with fewer locomotives, less locomotives means less bodies to maintain and operate them. There are several thousand cars stores in addition to the near 1500 locomotives. The problem with all of this is it will drive the stock price up for the shareholders who will then sell out and run with the money leaving a shell of a former great railroad struggling to rebuild itself after the head hunters leave. The railroads these people were at before are now trying to rebuild and gain their former customer's business. They also are having trouble hiring former and new workers to operate and maintain their fleets. Check out Hunter Harrison and what he did. He's passed on, but his underlings are the ones in charge now.
