  • In this lecture I have discussed the ASA physical status classification as stated by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
    - The ASA classification system represents a means of estimating medical risks presented by a patient who is undergoing or will undergo a surgical procedure.
    - There are in total six ASA classes in which we classify different categories of patients.
    - ASA class one includes normal and healthy patients.
    - ASA class two includes patients who have a mild systemic disease or have extreme anxiety or are over 60 years old.
    - ASA class three includes those patients that have severe systemic disease that limits their activity but is not incapacitating.
    - ASA class four includes patients that have a serious incapacitating disease that is a constant threat to their lives.
    - ASA category five includes the patient that is not expected to survive 24 hours without surgery.
    - Finally ASA six includes a brain dead patient.
