    Thanks Dude, it makes is alot easier when someone tells you, okay, EACH pipe has 2 bolts at the head, 2 bolts at the back, and 2 clamps on guard. Simple details makes it alot simpler for those of us that have never did the deed. Also, the warning about the clips that hold the head collars on.

  • @rclines001

    Pretty important to tighten exactly like he said. You start just cranking everything down as you go, and that causes binds in the exhaust and unwanted vibrations. Chances are if you have a vibration that concerns you, it's because the exhaust was installed incorrectly. You may be sitting there thinking "but theres no leaks, so that can't be the cause of MY vibrations", but you'd be wrong. I've experienced it myself. Then after I loosened everything back up and tightened it all back down in the correct order, the vibration vanished.

    I've got the Crusher PowerCell Staggered Duals after market exhaust ready to go on my Switchback as soon as a leg injury heals enough to let me get back on the bike.
    Glad this video is here to walk me through it so I am confident when it's time to actually get the install done. A trick that someone mentioned on another exhaust install video is to use the spring flange retainer clip to press the new gasket in. Gets it nice and flat.
    Something I'd love to see RevZilla do with after market exhaust reviews is a decibel meter reading. Get a reading of the stock exhaust at say 3 feet out from the back end of the bike, then a reading from the same distance with the exhaust being reviewed. Maybe with readings at both idle and mid-range RPM. I've got my exhaust all picked out and purchased, but something like that sure would have made the process a little easier.

    I appreciate this video.
    I'm replacing the front exhaust gasket and managed to get the pipes off after struggling with rusty nuts and threads. A new gasket later and a problem. I knew there must be something missing.
    I need the spring clip at the engine. The cheap Haynes manual is bad, all it says about the exhaust is an oxygen sensor. I knew I should have bought the proper Harley manual. I still might.

    • @tobiasjohansson7751
      @tobiasjohansson7751 4 роки тому

      @@jamesarone3076 To really make you Harley perform as it should/could you need three things; better airflow, cleared pipes and some sort of software for controlling your fuel. I also benched my bike to get more power where you want it, but that's usually not needed while I still really recommend it.
      So a hi-flow air filter, a software mapping, some straight shots and some money...

    NEVER tighten exhaust mounts UNTIL you torque flange nuts....upper nuts 9-18 inch pounds, lower nut to 120 inch pounds, then upper nut to 120 inch pounds. use hi-temp anti-seize on studs.

      @Jtdubbzz Рік тому

      I just installed the V&H 2-1 comp exhaust the other day but had to pull the muffler off to change out the mounting bracket… I tightened the muffler first and then the flanges… rode great yesterday but today I checked on em and they were pretty loose based on “hand torque” so I snugged em up, afraid I overly tightened em and crushed the gaskets because they were still kind of hot but didn’t get too crazy, either way I took a ride this evening and was noticing some unpleasant vibrations in 6th gear so I just loosened everything back up and went headers down… I’m hoping this does the trick… I’m noticing some trail and error here lol. Shit! 😆

    Do you need to always tune or a necessity to tune/modify your fuel sensor, evrytime you change full system exhausts and/or slip ons?? , and if i dont? if just change my exhausts pipes, will it harm my engine? thanks..

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  9 років тому

      +YingBo Panlaque Yes, every time you change your air intake or exhaust, you are changing your air/fuel ratio, which means you need to "tune" the whole intake-combustion-exhaust system again. Even if you just change your exhaust, you still need to change your fueling. If you don't optimize your fueling, your engine will likely run "leaner", which means the engine will run even hotter than it already does. Over time, that's not good for the engine. -DrewZilla

      Most full exhausts we carry have bungs and adapters to fit both 12mm and 18mm O2 sensors, so you can plug your stock O2 sensors into the new exhaust. Popular fuel tuners like the Fuelpak FP3 require the O2 sensors for proper fuel remapping. -DrewZilla

Looks DO matter but this move is for enhanced performance; I am not into loud at all. I'm also planning to get the VnH quiet baffle but considering the super quiet baffle. So here's my quandary; I'm not too keen about spending 5 bills for this boost I anticipate and spend another fifty to choke it all out. How much performance would I sacrifice if I went with the SQ baffles? Love your videos Lemmy! Very informative and a big help. Be safe.

    At 3:13 you note that as long as you have an after market Fuel pak, you do not need to reconnect the oxygen sensors. I followed your recommendation and now the Fuelpak 3 is giving me an error, as well the engine light is on the stock odometer. So, question is, assuming the oxygen sensors do not have to reconnected, how should I clear the light on the odometer as well have the Fuel pak 3 stop telling me I have a problem with the oxygen sensors? Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  8 років тому +1

      I think there may be a little misunderstanding. If you listen at 3:13, Lemmy says, "we don't have oxygen sensors on our bike either, because we already have an aftermarket _fuel controller_ on this bike that deleted the factory oxygen sensors." In this install video, Lemmy did not use a Fuelpak FP3. He used a different fuel controller (in this case, a Power Commander). The Power Commander required removing the stock O2 sensors. Conversely, the Fuelpak FP3 requires that you use the stock O2 sensors to function. Your exhaust should have O2 sensor bungs, so the solution is to screw the O2 sensors into the exhaust and make sure the sensor wires are connected to the wiring harness. Your FP3 should then function as intended. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla

      I think the misleading part for me was that it said my "after market fuel controller" and I incorrectly assumed it applied to all after market controllers. Any way, took the exhaust off this past weekend and install the Oxygen Sensors and engine light is gone. Thanks for responding back.

      The gaskets do deform when you tighten down the header pipes, but they shouldn't crumple when inserting them into the head. Did you remove the stock conical gasket from the head before installing the new gasket? -DrewZilla

      @vijaykishenhampapur8207 7 років тому

      Yes I did remove the stock gasket, using a pick. The new one just didnt go in smoothly so it crumpled a bit and I smoothed it down with my finger. I dont see any obvious signs of leaking exhaust gas from the header

    I had real trouble removing the gasket on the front cylinder head, it was literally stuck on and took me about an hour to pick it all out. The front cylinder head where the gasket goes seems a little rough compared to the back although I’ve removed all parts of the old gasket. Will this still seal or is this a problem?

    Hey Lemmy, thanks for the great video. Is the process basically the same for HD Touring bikes (2015)? Obviously I'll have clamps and O2 sensors to deal with, but are there any other things to look out for? Thanks!

  • @TheAnnoyingBoss

    So if you need to modify your fuel sensor to allow more fuel, does that mean that full system exhausts give your bike less fuel mileage?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  9 років тому +1

      TheAnnoyingBoss Sometimes yes and sometimes no. If better fueling allows you to run more smoothly at low RPMs, you may be able to run a gear higher and actually get better fuel mileage overall. And if you program the fuel controller to run a little leaner just at highway cruising speed in top gear, you can be more efficient. In the end, it all depends on how you ride the bike. -DrewZilla

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  8 років тому +1

      So after speaking with Lemmy a bit, he said that no, the exhaust flange won't necessarily sit flat to the exhaust port. The key is for the short amount of pipe ahead of the flange to seat into the exhaust gasket. -DrewZilla

    HI. I"ve just bought Iron 1200 and am super excited. Planning to replace exhaust pipes, possibly going for V&H Grenades 2 into 2(found quite cheap from an American ebay seller, almost half price). I really want to do it myself and wondering if someone can give me some useful tips. Just spoken to HD dealers and they're talking about 2k, but as I said I'd rather do, whatever I can, myself and get the final tuning or whatever from there. They said I also need to replace the air filter and tuner as well. Any help will appreciate.

      Looking at doing similar. The more research I do the more confused I get. I found the HDforums the best source of knowledge and recommendations for products. Comments I have heard that have encouraged more research
      1/ Crossover pipes generate the best sound
      2/ mixing brands of airflow filters , pipes, requires self tuning for mapping on the Fuel Cell which takes two full tanks and the bike runs rough during it, but works well when mapped.
      3/ Re-mapping a bike always starts from scratch.
      Hope that helps. I'm still learning

    1. I have a 2017 iron 883 with ABS and am looking to install the V&H Shortshots staggered... does my ABS affect anything differently than what is shown in the video removal/install?

      In regards to the 02 sensors: if I will be installing the FP3 at the same time as the exhaust, then I will need to disconnect the sensor during install (regardless), use sensor plugs in the 02 sensors, and then simply reconnect the harnesses as it came stock? Just a bit confusing at around 3:15 when Lemmy mentions deleted oxygen sensors due to the pre-installed FP3?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  8 років тому

      Those bikes use completely different exhaust mounting points, so installing an exhaust from a Sportster Forty-Eight would likely require additional fabrication. Most modern bikes will benefit from fuel management, but we strongly recommend it when adding an aftermarket full exhaust system and/or a high-flow air cleaner. Most OEM exhaust systems are specific to the motorcycle, and should work with stock fuel mapping. -TeamZilla
