Great advice! ! ! I will also add, a lot of dogs in North America are over weight, which causes them to have little interest in training with food (they already are eating too much) putting the dog on a diet increases their interest in working for food, AND exercising more
A couple of these comments completely overlook the point of clicker training. I adopted a poorly behaved high-energy 9month old lab cross. Two months later and lots of reruns of kikopup vids, she's like a new animal. I don't know the dog trainer in these videos - I'm just a random viewer from Toronto with a really good dog now! One thing: You need to have a food motivated dog for great success with this. My other dog isn't so food motivated but she now likes the clicker sound and knows it means she is good. And over time, you slowly stop using the clicker/treat. I still click with my mouth when they need reinforcement. And yeah, I always have kibble or treats in my pockets. I used to wear nice clothes, lol.
THANK YOU KIKOPUP!!!! I discovered you while attending Bergin University of Canine Studies, where I got my AS in Assistance Dog Education. You got me through some tough times and problem behaviors before I learned about Kohlberg's stages of development, BAT training, etc... I just wanted to give you props for putting those concepts into a language and video that common dog owners can understand. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
I'll have to try all this. I've tried giving him treats while he's looking at people but he just doesn't understand and will eat the treat but continue to bark. I feel bad for him because I know he's just scared of people but it's so embarrassing. It's gotten to the point that I have anxiety whenever I have to take him out for a walk. Ugh!
smokythebeard Hello, this is an excellent video and love your video, especially your ideas about when do puppies stop biting my hands. There is something I also found helpfull for stop barking puppy For more information search in the google writing- Panlarko perfect canine planner
There are a few factors in dog training. One place I found that succeeds in merging these is the Bevs Booster Guide (google it if you're interested) it's the most helpful plan that I have ever heard of.look at the awesome information .
smokythebeard I'm at my wits end..tried all OF THIS!! I am literally having panic attacks every time I take him for a walk.. I just got back from a walk and I feel like I've run a marathon. HE JUST DOESN'T GET IT!! I'M EXHAUSTED..😰
+Liz Liz oh I understand you all too well. I got my dog from animal rescue and he's incredibly reactive as well. Some walks are just torture and I really started to get nervous when I knew he might need to go out soon. Especially those sudden yanks on the leash in some random direction really got to me because they sometimes really, really hurt. It's also embarassing when people are friendly and go by and then my dog freaks out. Not much you can say then. However, after 6 months of no improvement, he suddenly got it. I mean he still barks and it's still a strain sometimes but it did get better. Much better. My biggest problem though is that my dog freezes upon seeing another dog and then he won't budge, until of course he decides to lunge and bark. Now I try to avoid those situations before they happen. Or I use a recall which works at times. What also helped is training and get playing right after the stimuli passes to get my pup to calm down faster. Sometimes he even anticipates the reward enough to contemplate if he really must react or if he'd rather play. I know it's not easy to say the least and I am not trying to downplay your despair. I totally get what you are going through and how painful and draining it can be.
Thanks for breaking this down into easy to do steps I'll practice this in spring. We're doing 1 & 2 constantly. It's really difficult to train a dog in the suburbs where few people walk their dogs (especially in the cold months). I thought socializing a dog would be so easy with daily walks, but so many people did 1 & 2 that my dog didn't get enough interactions.
Thank you, this barking on a leash video is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. I have been trying to stop this barking at other dogs on a leash for 4 months since I got the dog, a 2 1/2 year old female german shepard. She didn't bark at other dogs when I got her so I somehow created the situation. Thank you again! oh yes, ITS STARTING TO WORK!!!
This will defiantly help with my dog. He is people reactive, dog reactive, car reactive, bike reactive, and a but tun of energy. Its hard walking him since there is always people, dogs, cars, and bikes so I make a real fool of myself trying to get a 75 lb dog who completely ignores me to listen. I've tried the turning and walking away but he simply turns around and will pull me towards what he wants. I'll have to get some hot dogs and see if they are high value enough for him to ignore people, dogs, cars, and bikes.
I completely agree. I've had times where I have to say, "OK, I'm getting a little frustrated, that's enough for today." I understood what you meant. Sometimes if I'm just anxious about unrelated things, I have to remind myself to take some deep breaths and relax while walking my dog.
Wow, all your videos are very well explained and simple to understand! Awesome content! I've subscribed, and plan on watching all of them :) Cheers from Brazil
"If you're getting frustrated with your dog better to just go home." I totally agree...when I was training my dog in the beginning he was totally out of control and looking back I wish I would have simply turned back and went home. Instead I'd push through but with immense frustration that I know he could sense and it only slowed us down in the long run.
I have a big strong excitable Weimarraner X who has been difficult to teach to heel & also barking at people on a walk. After trying loads of positive methods, without much success, I tried this tonight and it worked like magic.Within five minutes, she was walking to heel beautifully & she loved the 'let's go!!' Early days, but this has been her best response so far. Thank you :-)
Sometimes I come to your channel just to see someone who's not "training" their dog with a shock/prong/choke collar, it's so refreshing to see someone who is training their dogs the right way :)
There is no "right way" to train a dog, but apperently you are some sort of arm chair expert. Try training a Mastiff with a clicker and see how far you get dipshit.
Thanks! It helps if you put the treat at your heel to reinforce the dog for being next to you, than out in front of you (teaching the dog to be in front of you)
yes, simple click when he is looking forwards naturally, THEN give the treat. Or if he is distracted by something that is the perfect opportunity to click and give him a treat.
great video! finally someone willing to get into the details and not be cryptic like these other youtubers who clearly are afraid to 'give up their secret formulas' on how to actually make any progress with a dog.
I'm so happy that I found your video. My foster dog - Doberman/GSD/Rotti was barking at people as we walked. I just started the technique - "Let's GO"! Diesel is responding to this wonderfully!! Thanks!
@NativeHiro That tells you your dog is so stressed to be out of the house that his body has cut off the blood circulation to his stomach causing him to not be hungry. You need to habituate him to being out of the house, take him places, perhaps feed him his meals by hand when out and about? Make sure being out side is the 'norm' not a rarity.
This is one of my absolute favorite videos of yours! It is such an important subject matter! So many dogs have over arousal issues. :) Really AWESOME! Spirit looks amazing! What a great dog! 5*s and a FAVORITE!
I have just come across your video page, home page and blog, and I will follow them closely from now on. I was a bit stuck in teaching my dog pivoting, and I also wanted to find some new tricks to train, and when I came across your video page, I got all the help I needed, and SO much more! Now I have watched lots of your videos and set up a training plan for passing dogs, for barking at strange people, and of course for pivoting and tricks :-) Thank you so much for sharing!
wow its like you can read minds :P my dog a australian shepherd is now 6 months old and she is getting more protective and will bark at people(not during the day but usualy when its getting dark outside.) this video will help me a lot. thanks
I am going to try this as my chihuahua is definitely food motivated. Hes a terror to bring on walks, barks at people, and other dogs. I've just gotten him too so want to definitely do this as the warmer weather coming up and will be out MUCH more.
I would really love to see a step by step video. How to get a reactive dog on a trail with on coming dogs.. My dog is not aggressive, but he does bark and lunge.. I'm working with your videos on loose leash and leave it. He was in a kennel most of his life so he gets excited easily. I hike and backpack, and in some areas we do come across a lot of hikers with dogs. Thank yous so much for making these videos.. They have been a lot of help.
Actually, turning around will help your dog succeed in training. When you walk in the other direction, you're communicating with them that you want them to focus on something else. it is like telling them to change the subject and move on. hope this helps!
Great video.I'll practice with my dog starting tomorrow.I have a 4 years old American Staffordshire Terrier who's an angel but got bitten last summer and since then he became fearfull and sometimes barks back when other dogs piss him off. He's strong, very strong and if the other dog doesn't stop threatening him or I don't switch direction fast enough he could end up with the other in 10 seconds.Until now I've tried to avoid encounters with them cause I didn't know what to do, but not anymore :)
I have a phobia of being near other dogs, in case a 'row' starts between them and I get pulled down. My dog has only started to react recently and I feel it is my fault. I never let her off the lead unless in a confined area - I am less worried then. Even when I am brave enough to say hello to a friend walking their dog, and mine has met it before, my heart starts pounding. I need help for this but not sure where to go and everything is so expensive. However, I walk her daily - she is not aggressive but I think I am making her fearful. Thank you for this video, I just found it and will go back again to study it and try these techniques.
wow thanks for posting this i have this same problem when i walk my dog he is a small dog and he likes to bark at any dog he sees walking down the street
Thank you very much. ^.^ My dogs are, to me, well-behaved, but my terrier mix gets agitated easily and I`ve been trying to get him to calm down when he sees dogs or goes into the car for quite some time.
This is a great video. The dog is beautiful. I need to try this with my dog sometime. What I'd really like to see with barking is a dog who barks while loose in the yard or in the house. My dog always barks really loudly when people come to the door or sees someone on the street outside.
I love (back-clipping) harnesses; they can make walking even an extremely difficult dog much easier and more pleasant for both of you. Plus, they seem more comfortable than collar-walks. Even if a harness doesn't exactly look flattering on your particular dog, you may find that the benefits are very worthwhile.
These tips have worked wonders for us. We implement them all and actually enjoy running into situations to challenge us now. Thank you Emily for the best dog training tips! And we use this with squirrels on our walk too:)
Thanks Emily, just what I needed!! I decided to work on Berri walking on a loose leash before working on his barking at other dogs on the walk. It is quite funny to see now, he trots along and barks at other dogs on a loose leash now, I can see he really wants to tug on the lead but he is so good! Step two, working on the barking. And what a gorgeous demo dog you were working with! I'd love to have your job :o)
Really great advice. :) But I have to say, it is really hard for people in the States to find places where one isn't surprised by other dogs out of the blue. A baseball field is great for exercise. :) Good luck to all with reactive dogs!
Yes, I believe when these stressful events occur, we get stressed along with the dog, and find it difficult to control OUR reactions. The more we practice, the less likely we are to lose our cool under pressure. So, the training benefits both dog and human.
Thank you for this advice! I just so happen to have a clicker from when I was training my parrot. My Sheltie is adopted, and he has a huge barking problem towards other people that are not familiar to him, as well as any other animal. Going on walks are dreadful around 5pm, when all the neighborhood is coming home from work. It's drizzling today, so let's see how things go. Thank you again for the advice!
5* and a fav! This is such a helpful video for all people with reactive/fearful dogs and hyperactive ones too:)! I am glad to hear Jake is doing so well with his training too:)! Happy Clicking! Ashley & Kaine
1) Emily - funny enough, we just started doing this with Vela - she gets so excited when she sees other dogs. Just want to play, play play. Goal is to be able to pass another dog on the street. 2) When using Firefox, download the Firefox plug-in (add-on) called Download Helper. Available for either Mac or Windows. It installs next to the URL field. WOrks like a charm for just about all browser viewable video content. Thanks for your great videos. YOU ROCK!!!
WOW! WOW! this is a REALLY EXCELLENT vid, i love the way you have shown it, I love that you have put the info on about the chemical reaction within the dogs body. Education helps people to understand better what is going on, so that they then can have the knowledge how to help their dog. This provides it all...fantastic is defo one to share:))) i love the cue 'Lets go', i use it often for changes in direction and to get the dogs attention back on you:))
Your videos are very interesting!! How would you recommend to go about a dog that barks to people on the roof? We live in a city and our dog barks like mad when the neighbors get on the roof- while we DO want her to warn us of such things, once I come out to check it out and tell her it's fine, she still won't shush. We can't really 'pull her away' from what's making her bark as she has a view of the roof from all of our yard.
@soccerhunxx Try to walk away as briskly as you can encourage your dog to come with you. Turn around earlier at first. Work on the "lets go" FIRST without other dogs around before using it! Remember to proof!
Yeah, you can't really do any training because they are being reinforced when you are gone. I have had great success with clients by blocking the dogs view, as well as having a secondary fence at least 5-10 feet between the fence that the other dogs are behind. You can use counter conditioning, but you have to get past a certain level before you can leave the dog unattended to train themself
Yeah ... was a bit of a problem in Wiesbaden last weekend. She went bezerk, when we wenot into the ring for our DD number, but she did come back to me and we were able to do the number. At the end, she ran FULL SPEED 4-5 times around the inside of the ring. I think to burn off the tension. I put up a training film of the new routiine, that we'll be doing in WInterthur in February. Still got some work to do, but the audience in Wiesbaden did like it, even with a couple of mishaps.
Actually -- I think that the trends are DEFINITLY swinging away from the 'dominance theory'. In fact, Zak's show(or youtube vids) never show or use dominance method. He uses communication and trust building and relationship building. I love both of your training styles and watch both of your vids all the time. Just wanted to say that -- your time may come sooner than you think as people are absolutly moving away from the dominance method(and pretty quickly i might add). Love your vids-thx! :)
I am a bit confused. you said don't give them a treat when they are looking at the treat but I think you are doing it around 3:22 . and I am anxious to know if I am doing it right or not on this subject. My 18 weeks old puppy gets over excited over people and dogs. so whenever we encounter them during walks, when she looking at it curiously, I say YES and if she turns back, I would back away and give a treat. but she doesn't look at me when she turns around. she looks at my hand which has a treat and just come and get it. personally, even though she is looking at treat not me, this has been a great progress. success rate is also still like 60%. should I stop doing this because she is looking at treats?
After the marker the dog will look to where the treat is anticipated from. So when you are marking for looking at something and the dog looks back after the marker they will be looking for their treat, does that make sense?
Great video on reactivity. I love how you don't just tell people but SHOW them. Timing is 95% of your success. Do you have any exercises along the same line for fence fighting? I usually let Desperado out back w/ my sister's golden when I'm at school and they are horrible fence fighters. The worst part is that now I can hardly use the back yard to play with him now because as soon as the other dogs come out he is gone.
@kikopup Zak George suprisingly doesn't agree with the "dominance" theory either. Caesar Milan I can't say the same for. Haha. Love your videos! I really needed this one!
that's really helpfull. thanks. I can't wait until the episode 4. You are such a fantastic dog trainer, even better then Zak George. Will you be on Animal Planet some day??
This is great. Will these same tips work for squirrels? My Spaniels are squirrel maniacs. They usually walk fairly well but when they see a squirrel they go a little insane. Very embarrassing on early morning weekend walks!
Have you tried the exersize of giving into leash pressure in front of distractions as she instructed in the beginning? (I'm guessing so but hey, gotta check, right?) It's all about breaking it down and seeing when/where your dog becomes reactive to things. Perhaps when you see a big dog in the distance, stop for a bit and try the suggestion in 2:27 where you're rewarding in the presence of the stimuli (big dogs/people). Maybe try and figure out what kind of people he barks at too and repeat.
I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT, whenever I take him for walks, we have problems. He hates other dogs and other people sometimes even growls at us. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!
u heard my voice from the ep1(or2).... xDDD Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!! I thk you are teaching people more than teaching dog ..T_T you do a great job!!

This video combined with your newer “leave it for people and other dogs” are extremely helpful. You’re my favorite training resource!
I hope to make more videos on this topic, I think people should have this info for free! So many dogs need it!
Ugh!

Love all the concepts!!!

Wow, all your videos are very well explained and simple to understand! Awesome content! I've subscribed, and plan on watching all of them :)

I recommend this video still to this day. It’s the one I recommend the most. ❤️❤️❤️
Could not agree more but your videos are helping people to understand there is a different way to train. Plant a seed......

@NativeHiro That tells you your dog is so stressed to be out of the house that his body has cut off the blood circulation to his stomach causing him to not be hungry. Thanks for great Advice
Great demonstration of a stress-free, yank-free way to train a dog to be calm. Great work.

wow thanks for posting this i have this same problem when i walk my dog he is a small dog and he likes to bark at any dog he sees walking down the street
Wonderful helpful video for the many, many people who do not understand classical conditioning or how to use it! Awesome! 5*
I started using Emily's methods 2 months ago on my 9yr old Kelpie and she can now do about 10 new amazing things!!
You are amazing! When we get a newer dog I will use your videos what to do. Ours are so old now...
Thank you very much. ^.^
My dogs are, to me, well-behaved, but my terrier mix gets agitated easily and I`ve been trying to get him to calm down when he sees dogs or goes into the car for quite some time.
or any sound that always sounds the same but doesnt bother you. Worse comes to worse, you could mark with the word "yes"

Great techniques! I always enjoy your videos!
Thank you so much! This video is just what I need!
Another great and informative video, Emily! Thanks for making it and keep them coming!
Yes, I believe when these stressful events occur, we get stressed along with the dog, and find it difficult to control OUR reactions. The more we practice, the less likely we are to lose our cool under pressure. So, the training benefits both dog and human.
what a beautiful dog! And you show very nicely how fast dogs learn with this method :)
I LOVE this video :) Love all your "barking" videos, i hope you keep these coming!
Thanks!
Excellent!
Thanks! Your videos are great! I have done a lot of clicker training with horses but am new to dogs and your videos are a fantastic help!
Great video. Good presentation. Thanks.
Fabulous video! I think I'll start the lunging-on-leash exercise with my dog this week!
OMG,this really helps.
thank you so much for making the vid.
Great video on reactivity. I love how you don't just tell people but SHOW them. Timing is 95% of your success.
Do you have any exercises along the same line for fence fighting? I usually let Desperado out back w/ my sister's golden when I'm at school and they are horrible fence fighters. The worst part is that now I can hardly use the back yard to play with him now because as soon as the other dogs come out he is gone.
thank you!
i love this episode!
Awesome video! Happy New Year! Coach Cory
This was so helpful thank you!
Wonderful video, just like always! 5*s!
Thanks for the tips!
@kikopup Zak George suprisingly doesn't agree with the "dominance" theory either. Caesar Milan I can't say the same for. Haha. Love your videos! I really needed this one!
This is FABULOUS! How did you manage to cover in just over 5 minutes what it usually takes me a few hour-long sessions to teach? :)
that's really helpfull. thanks. I can't wait until the episode 4. You are such a fantastic dog trainer, even better then Zak George. Will you be on Animal Planet some day??
thx, i saw the stars posted but didn't realize that was where you rated.
Will you email me at dogmanticsstore@gmail.com?
Great lesson, Emily. How do I give it five stars? I can't find the rating thing on the page.
great again!! thanks
u heard my voice from the ep1(or2).... xDDD
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!
I thk you are teaching people more than teaching dog ..T_T
you do a great job!!
Thank you soooo much for this video. I really like your method and it seems very effective on my cairn terrier :-)
