Totally agree. I dont get the hate on the RP.... yes: - the sensor is "old"/reused from the 6D Mk2.... but its still a usable FF sensor! - canon crippled the software heavily, thats definately a big NoGo and very anti-consumer. - its battery life, especially at video usage sucks But still... I LOVE THE CAMERA! Yes, Sony A7R III, Nikon Z6 II etc are all better cameras... but they are also A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE, in fact that expensive that the average hobby photographer wont buy it. The RP on the other hand is a very solid FF and more or less modern camera for a DAMN GOOD PRICE.
Having watched most of your uploads, I now see that most of the cameras benefit a lot from taking them out , using them and Thinking on the images and each camera's potential. I took my OLD Dx SLR with a kit lens out to the local hillsides this past few days. It was great too. My own, quite primitive, reaction was that compactness would be practically useful to me. Your uploads have made me think about my photography as well as my kit. What a great photograph of the Bridge. Thank You.
I have an RP on its way from MPB, but there are so many different opinions on this camera. You have proven that i have made the right choice buying the RP as my first full frame. I guess ppl tend to compare it to the R6, but it is twice the price.
The RP is excellent if you find it too small get the little grip extension mpb sometimes sell them I got one for £16 or something like that on there it makes a big difference
Part of me got GAS recently, wanting to get into mirrorless. I used a 6D until the screen died on me which I gifted to a relative that did lovely landscapes, though on their phone. I used my 5Dc until I grabbed a 5DMKII for 175 to hold me over.. I was tempted by a cheap Z6 used professionally (at RP prices) but I cancelled last minute because while it has the performance, it's just the WRONG camera for me. I loved the 6D and the 5D 2 is lovely as well, I just wanted better autofocus coverage and composition above f2.5 when using the sigma arts 1.4.. fact is that these older sensors with less dynamic range just look better right out of the tin without editing. The 5D with a skilled user can take great pictures. It only has like 9 stops, the 5D2,6D, RP have like 10, 5D4 and R are 11, and the newest R5 is 12. Sure, it's higher, but you'll only know by raising the shadows a lot. Your screen or prints only display ~6.5 stops. You need HDR OLED monitors to display even what the 5D classic has.
Stunning image.Does the canon RP have as good or better colours than the Nikon D610 in your opinion , which do you prefer? As I know you have experience with both
For portraits and people I prefer the RP and for everything else the d610 is better really. The canon has better colours but the d610 is a fair bit ahead in regards to its sensor.
Great shot Martin. For landscapes would you say knowing how to get the most DR out of a scene is more important than depth or lens sharpness? Many thanks.
Different things really so hard to compare, it really depends on the scene because if you need dynamic range and you dont have it then you are a bit stuck and need to bracket. Almost all lenses are sharp enough really with a few exceptions probably. Depth you need for sure as well though unless going for a different look. So each thing you mention can cause problems in its own way and hard to say something is more important than something else as they are all important in their own way :)
Interesting thoughts about that sky, water and rock thing. I always thought it was supposed to be earth, wind and fire ;) I think it might have been nicer a bit earlier on that curved bridge. Where I am we basically have all private property around and have to shoot from the roadside. You can get some nice shots if you are flexible with subjects, but lighting is a waiting game and sometimes you can get stood up. It is hilly where I am and you can get up nice and high and that is quite helpful. You are right though, foreground as a mere item and or context is a very good point. However, one does not always have a choice in it. It may be those too close people could not get a shot further back of higher up. Thery may have been "contending with bullshit" - which is to say uncontrollable crap. A rock is probably better than no rock, but maybe a rock and long exposure on the water to smooth it out may be better still, but you can overdo it if you do it as a "thing" not naming names. Begins with a G. I have reached the point where I often shoot nothing since I am more picky now. When I started I just shot what looked nice, but did not pay much attention to where the light was. For me, it can be hard finding nice foreground where I shoot. I use long lenses since there is often no "getting too close" in any real way. Odd thing. In NY they have the Adirondacks which is basically all forest and mountains. That can be challenging as a mere lazy tourist, I have not tired any trails though. You can die on some wild-ass rivers, not like they have easy access. It depends on your age. So, the challenge can also be "how not to die" and still get a good image. However, even in the middle of nowhere contrails are a shit problem I can tell you that! And they say drones are the problem, BS on that. Good video, best wishes!
Thanks for this John, i know what you mean, i didnt mean it too literally but i also think that when people get to places they often shut down, i see it a lot they photograph something so close up that there isnt anything left of it. But totally accept what you say as sometimes and maybe often its really just hard to find anything. Id like to see the documentary of a landscape photographer "how not to die and still get a good image"! hahah that could be entertaining!
@@MartinCastein Good thoughts, I see what you mean. I think digital has made things so easy we get a bit lazy. I take forever to shoot a role of film. Interesting when we add a price to the click, it makes me work harder. I noticed when "that guy" shot the last role of Kodachrome he shot first with a digital camera before he took the shot with the Kodachrome. I noticed in his shot of Robert DeNiro that DeNiro was way less of an asshole then so perhaps there was some Kodachrome ego poisoning there? Fame and infamy are apparently on the same side of the coin these days. Best wishes for your continued success!
Hi Martin , Overall, how do you rate it for landscape photography? and the quality of the files? I would like to understand why I like printing on paper… thanks
Personally I don't think it's a good buy, perhaps if you can find one very cheap but from what I've seen the Z6 is going for about the same price on the used market and the EOS R is only a few hundred pound more. Both have much better DR, weather sealing etc.. Of course it's possible to get around it's limitations but why make more work for yourself? Also scenes with movement can become more complex or just impossible to exposure blend.
But still: The RP is the only really affordable full frame camera, good Nikon lenses cost A LOT and 3rd party are often not that great. On the RP you can get off with much better prices by adapting (Canon!) EF glass... i recently got for example a fair priced EF 100mm 2.8L Macro lens... i wish i knew how awesome this lens was already like 10 years ago... like this i would have probably completely forgot about a 50mm Sigma Macro for 300$ and just saved the 1200$ around for the Canon L Macro lens. But in overall...yeah, i bought the RP about a year ago... the competition was more expensive than canon, the only really interesting deal would have been a 2nd hand Sony A7 II, but just the fact that i had a lot of good and still used EF glasses - made me rethink the idea of switching the whole system and the RP was in that concern a pretty good deal (until i can afford in many years a 2nd hand R5 or R6)
Martin, how would you rate the RP output vs the original 6D or 5D3?? Those cameras xabe be found for little money now, so for stills-only might be an excellent choice. I still enjoy my 5D classic... Thank you!!
The output of the 6d is better id say the rp beats the 5diii though and sits closer to the 6d. One thing you shouldnt underestimate though with the rp is the upgrade in focus speed and accuracy. Depends if that matters to you. I really like the 6d and the RP, the 5diii is a better pro body.
@@MartinCastein Interesting. Canon are experts in making it hard to decide which camera to buy ... or keep. I'm so behind the curve that I'm still thinking of upgrading from my 6D to a 5Dmk4 (I REALLY like to see if things work before I buy). My sneaky suspicion is that a 5D mk4 would be all the camera I'd ever need. (If the 6D had pro weather-sealing it would be perfectly fine actually).
I want to get into (wider angle) landscape with the EOS RP (im mainly doing astro, lightpainting and wildlife with more spezialized lenses) Would you suggest saving some bucks for a 2nd hand 16-35mm 2.8L, probably for less a 17-40mm 4L or the "cheapest" option, a basic EF-S 10-22mm at the cost of just crop mode usable but i could afford it at least. my smallest focal range is 28mm and it really sucks so i used for most of my landscape images just my iPhone 12 Mini wide angle camera. My biggest concern: that a EF S wide angle lens, and so crop mode on the RP - isnt much better than the iPhone, am i right?
I wouldn’t get the 10-22 I’d try to get the 2.8 16-35 or look at prime lenses such as sigma 20 or 24 or even samyang 14mm 2.8 but you will want to have a faster lens.
@@MartinCastein Ohh i think i eplained it a bit wrong. I DONT need the lens for astrophotography, probably i would try something like the 16-35mm 2.8 for it, but thats it. What i mainly want is just the wider focal range because 28mm is a very tight for basically 90% of landscape images i would want/try to take. I dont really need F2.8 or so, i am mainly used to F4 up to about F11, no need for big aperture primes, these i have anyways like the RF 50mm 1.8 and before the EF 50m 1.4, since a while the EF 100mm 2.8L Macro and so. Do you think a EF-S lens will be a huge problem considering i am loosing a lot resolution? Going down from 26MP Full frame to 10MP 1,6x crop? Especially since in landscape high resolution is "needed" or at least wished?
@@MartinCastein I would have got a EF-S 10-22mm already... BUT i have already some bad experiences with "cheap" lenses: - EF 50mm 1.4.... such a trashy lens, more expensive AND worse than 1.8s... not even mentioned the very poor, fragile build quality - Sigma 50mm 2.8 1:1 macro... nice macro, good sharpness and IQ... but VERY TRASHY AF mechanics... good for manual focus thats it. Not really worth the price once and now. - EF 75-300 IS USM.... never ever again, luckily i could sell it for the price i paid once! I began to get "proper" lenses like the EF 100mm 2.8L Macro prime and (dont beat me, thats literally the MOST EXPENSIVE lens i ever bought!) RF 800 F11, its pretty much a difference like DAY AND NIGHT... comparing beginner/trashy glasses with midclass to higher end stuff, even if its 13 years old like the 100mm 2.8L macro. The only reason the 17-40 F4L is in my mind still.. its somehow "affordable", the 16-35 2.8L, as much i would love this lens... is pretty much out of reach for me, at least for up to the next 1-2 years since the 100mm L macro lens and RF 800 literally made my pockets empty.
@@MartinCastein Ok, well i dont lose much by getting a 10-22, found one right now for 90€ 2nd hand in a city pretty close, i just buy it and if its not really interesting/im not happy with i should get rid of it easily for 90€ again.
@@MartinCastein well the reason why i was surprised was i still have my 5d classic as well as the 5dmk3 with me so i am very familiar with the DR of those cameras. I also own both the RP and the R6.
