@@Dakota1812 Better customization, switches of your choice, can make it anyway you want. I used to have the same question but now I use 2 different custom built keyboards.
The keyboard position at 6:20 you're talking about started to become popular back in the CRT monitor era, though back then that was with the keyboard sitting on your lap. Done mostly to have more room for your big monitor and to have room to move your mouse.
I think desktop icons are the worst offender for visual cleanliness you can have on your setup. I myself make my whole UI custom from scratch on linux and after that using windows with all the stupid little buttoms and visual flare that just jumps in your eyes kills it for me but need to use it for gaming haha. I know some people don't just care/see them the same way but for me my desktop being clean is super important.
His reaction to the overcrowded dextop icons was hilarious. I personally highly prefer a minimalist dextop so I get it, but couldn't help laughing at his reactions.
Optimum I'm telling you you don't know how much I waited for this bro we need a lot more of these maybe once every 2 months or sumn like that. Your vids are actually so enjoyable to watch keep up the good work man
I used a 40% keyboard for a while at my desk job. For most everyday stuff it was fine, but you will have to learn how to use layers and it will take a few days to find a good layer setup that works for you. In an office environment, the biggest struggle for me was trying to remember which symbols where on the which number key. There are several drawbacks that make gaming extremely difficult on a 40%. No number row kills most FPS games. Even if you rebind weapons to cycle using the mouse wheel, many games have important items bound on numbers 1-5 that aren’t cycled with your weapons. Losing the number row also means losing (or relocating) the two modifiers from that row. Since Caps Lock is pretty useless despite sitting on the home row, most people move it to a function layer. Tab, Control, and Shift are pretty important for most games so relocating any of them from their normal position really messes with your muscle memory. That probably means putting Escape on the home row modifier, which take some getting used to. Layers and special tap/hold key function become important on tiny keyboards, but those are not really compatible with gaming. For ortho 40s like the one in the video, The 2u spacebar in the center is also a bit of a problem is when you play games with WASD, as your hand is shifted over one column. The little 2u spacebar is not too much of a problem when typing normally, but becomes an uncomfortable stretch when gaming. There are some 40s that have double 2u spacebar support, which alleviates this problem. You also lose dedicated F keys, which can be a problem for some games. 1u modifiers are certainly useable for gaming, but it can be slightly disorientating when finding the modifiers vs the alpha keys. It is possible to use a 40% keyboard for gaming, especially if you change your keybinds in game to work around the limitations of the layout, but it is going to be too much of a hassle for most people and most games. All that being said, I highly, highly recommend trying ortholinear for gaming (and typing). If you want to try a smaller otholinear board for gaming, I would recommend a 50% like the Preonic with 2x2u spacebar support, or RGBKB’s Pan keyboard. If you want to bump it up to 60%, the Boardwalk pcb offers several excellent layout options.

you know what mate, I generally dont care about people being nice to those of us who grew up in southern parts of asia but you handled it very well, just acceptance of limitations and decent use of available resources. No pity or insult, generally reactions seem to be from one of those lol. I remember having lived in houses like that. Cheers to you my man.
makes no sense though. he’s running a fanatec DD wheelbase which is rated for way higher torque than that budget flimsy folding seat is ever designed for
@@wrth I just like the layout, not the actual parts used. I don't know enough about the right gear for a proper sim set-up anyway. I like it because it looks nice and space optimized.
5:39 it's not the microphone that sounds bad, its the room. In a well treated room being a bit further away can also sound good especially in a studio environment when recording vocals for music. But that also depends on the kind of microphone you use and also what you use the mic for. In most cases being close is better.
I think the reason people have insane keyboard tilt is so that their whole arm upto their elbow is on the desk and nothing it hanging off, personally I just use the arm rests on my chair they're adjustable which is really nice
I don't think the desktop icon flood is entirely intentional. Sometimes when you don't prevent installers from creating them actively they'll just spam your desktop. But honestly, what are we even doing with desktop icons anymore? Programs you want in quick access you'd add to the taskbar anyway, everything else is just clutter. And (for me anyway) the desktop is hidden behind multiple program windows at all times, to the point that it doesn't even make sense for me to pick a background image 😛
I love your setup reviews - Ed from Tech Source has cool setups featured, but only reviews like 4-5 setups and has unhelpful or superficial criticisms on the setups- yours are always very respectful and also truly helpful when needed. I'm planning on building my first pc setup and i find these setup videos very entertaining to watch but also good for inspirations of how i should set mine up
People used to tilt their keyboard inwards due to having limited space on LAN setups. It can also enable your thumb and index finger easier access to more keys.
Your opinions on upgrading, as well as low-budget or setups working with limited opportunity are extremely refreshing in this tech world where you always seem to start to feel behind everyone else because your spec is 2 gen's old. Anyway, new sub, good work man!
Thanks so much for the feature Ali! I can confirm the fans are setup correctly ☺️. And the wrist rest. It's the Delta Hub one. So it has a glider on the bottom of it easy to move around on the mouse pad. To further a bit more in the streaming side the cameras I use are the Sony A6000 and the Sony A7iii. GoXLR with a Shure SM7B and a 16 key under desk mounted Stream Deck ☺️.
Yoo I just wanted to say seemed like he thought it was funny that people like us use a wrist rest. My sister got me this for chrismtas this past Christmas and I can confirm it makes a total difference. I play val and game a lot it make a huge difference for not getting arthritis and carpal tunnel. Highly recommend to people who want a wrist rest it glides smoothly like colin stated. I wish I knew they had a white though mine is black!
I totally get ya with the desktop icons! The only things I have on my desktop are apps I use often or things I'm currently working on. Other than that, I try to keep it as clean as possible.
If you want to try out a 40%, I'd recommend a Vortex Core. May not be the most aesthetic board out there, but its a great starting point for learning how to use a 40%. The keycaps have the alternate functions printed on them, so you don't need to commit them to memory. The board is programmable, so you can change layers and keybinds to tweak it to your liking. As far as playing games, I'll rebind keys to something not hidden behind a layer or bind a function to a mouse side button.
I'd disagree a little. DIY is the main reason to go sub 60%, the point is to memorize as it's faster and nothing helped me more than getting blank keycaps. I would suggest getting something ergo, either unibody or proper split as ortho and row staggered 40ies kinda kill your wrists. I suggest Reviung41 or cornelius style boards for getting used to them or just go basic and get a Corne build. There are also some sub 60% alice type boards that are nice looking and might be a little more familiar to what most people are used to. From there it's just some days of tweaking in QMK to get the layers and taphold functions to act how you want them and a good layer setup and you're on your way. I personally daily a modified Reviung39 have layers for daily use and general stuff and a layer for gaming where I can toggle to a numpad right under my WASD pretty much instantly so it's all really fast and easy to reach. Cheers!
I'd have to respectfully disagree with the suggestion as well; If you're going to go 40, you may as well go ortho as well, and doing either seems like a waste or asking for problems if you don't also leave yourself the customizability that comes with QMK or ZMK. This way you're not pidgeon-holed into specific layouts or functionality. QMK is really amazing and has made the ergonomic switch worth it for me.
@@threepe0 how I summed up 40% boards and ergo boards made with QMK to my friends was - you make yourself a problem by removing most keys but the solutions you find to make it usable again turn out to be way better than how it was before you made a problem for yourself.
Been using a dactyl manuform for a while that is about the equivalent of a 40% keyboard. I don't really miss anything with the layer shifts available. For example instead of reaching up and moving my wrist/palm to hit 1,2,3,4 etc I hold down a layer shift with my thumb, and asdfg becomes 12345 while qwert becomes f1, f2, f3, f4, f5. Other things include a gaming layer toggle with crouch and jump buttons under my thumb to avoid having to do finger yoga while crouching and walking forward for example. Much less movement of the entire hand, and in the end, quicker as well as more comfortable for me. If you ever go down the custom keyboard/qmk rabbit hole, I'm excited to see what you come up with and of course I'm happy to help too. The community is really supportive in general.
Pro tip. Hide all shortcuts by right clicking on desktop, hovering over "view", and unchecking "show desktop icons". Anything on your desktop will still be accessible from file explorer, but you won't cause Optimum anxiety. :)

It works and thermals were great. with the vertical GPU and bottom 240 Radiator in a Complete Vertical case, No more worries about the weird rad placement. Complete identical to meshilicious ssupd and nzxt as the Back panel were place at the bottom.
Most of the western people would make fun of this guy. Hats of to you for showing that guy some respect. That's what I love about this channel. For people who don't know, India has higher import taxes on pc components which makes it harder to even afford a decent gaming pc, spending a whole lot of money on such stuff isn't a good investment for us. Language barrier is another concern for us to start streaming on a global basis, I can write pretty well but can't speak as fast as a western people could.
As someone who is part of the "No Desktop Shortcuts" team, I understand that some people can't be bothered to press their windows key (or alt + space for my PowerToys bros), or even just pin their most used apps on their taskbar, you do you. But damn, being able to quickly search and open apps using just my keyboard lets me appreciate the amount of money I've already spent on my keyboard while also freeing up my desktop.
Some application doesen't pop up when you search for it... and sometimes i just dont't remember the name off applications i only use sometimes. So i orginize the icons as neatly as possible.
@@richardKeytero That is indeed a true downside for the stock windows search if you don't index a lot, windows doesn't recognize it as an installed app (when you only download the exe that launches instantly) and/or don't really remember the names of apps. Still in the end, people have their preferences and some like me just force ourselves to use search since it keeps the desktop clean. So, "You do you."
Loved the video as always On the 40% keyboard note: One does program a layout solely for gaming purposes with numbers to the sides of wha you'd use for movement and interaactions etc
many 40% keyboards capitalize on QMK features and the bottom row is almost exclusively layer buttons - you toggle or shift up and down layers like a caps lock, but turn the layout to numbers, characters, hell you could have a dedicated gaming layer and remap all the buttons to whatever you need them to be
Dude, I've been part of your channel since not too long, from the day I decided I need to step up my work environment at home, and build my first PC. You were my inspiration and I went for Kolink Rocket case . I have custom made oak wood desk I have been working for over 20 days. I am days away from finishing. I've put a lot of work into this desk. Main feature is I have mounted two aluminium shelves underneath for ps4 and my current notebook which is the Asus GX501. There is some unique cable menegment you will find as well. Definitely something not generic. Otherwise I love your videos. The content has awesome presentation to it. Greetings from Poland!
Actually like my desktop with some icons. Makes me feel like I'm looking at a computer screen. When it's empty, I feel dull and just think that I am looking at a picture. 😅 Loved the vid!
Thank you for picking my setup. To the right is my work laptop (under the TV) setup and the left is my fun setup. Case is a 5000d Airflow, MSI B550 Tomahawk, Ryzen 3800xt, Ballistix 32gig 3600 ram , Corsair Capellix 360 AIO , 9x 120mm SP fan, 1x WD Black Sn850 nvme, 1tb Mx500, EVGA 3080 FTW3, LG 34gp83A 1440p monitor, Keychron Q2 keyboard, Model O wireless. Maono USB mic, Yamaha Amplifier with Angstrom speakers, I fabricated the desk and wall mounts with old kitchen table tops and used store shelves racking.
I'm with you with desktop icons. There are so many other ways to get to stuff. I'll have maybe 1 icon for my Home directory, everything else is either start bar or search
I don't have an issue with shortcut icons on the desktop, as long as they are organized neatly. It's a nice temporary working space for files as well, so of course I'll be using it.
Absolute top specs, smallest possible case, Mo-Ra 3. Maybe even hide the case and Mo-Ra behind a multi monitor setup on the wall. Nothing on the floor, super clean, and only the monitor, keyboard, pad, mouse, and mic visible.
There is nothing wrong with desktop icons, which is what the desktop is for. Gamers complain about them, but we professionals all have them. When it takes up the whole screen, it gets unmanageable and defeats the purpose.
These desk setup videos really inspired my current setup, and honestly I feel a lot better about my current setup. I might include mine the next time you do a video on fan submitted setups :D

Great vid as always Optimum! Quick question: how’s your experience with superglides and rougher pads? More in terms of durability, curious if the skates get scratched/worn, and if the pad gets any slow spots. Thanks!!
Oh you are currently using the Hien? I was thinking that was too fast? Did you give it a bit of time to break in? Mine was wild for a few weeks then has been great for the past 1.5 years or so. Use it for PUBG and everything else that I play, every time I think that I need more control I try something else briefly and come right back.

its nice that you showed some really messy setups. imo setups in the messier side has a more home-y feel to it like you can live there instead of a "streamer" setup because it looks like it's produced in a factory
I have the new 16 inch MacBook Pro as well and couldn't help but notice you using it here. It's such a tremendous machine, glad to see you're still rocking it. Do you ever use it for video editing or nah? I like seeing some tech tubers in the PC gaming space using Apple products. Too many are quick to shit on Apple despite the great laptops and desktops they've been releasing recently.
i've come across your channel rather recently when deciding on what new mouse/mousepad to buy and i've been hooked ever since. really awesome job at conveying information and keeping it entertaining! :)
You raised some interesting points in this video. I think I'll definitely implement that desktop icon one you kept drilling. Not sure why I have them all there anyways tbh. Great vid!

That is indeed a true downside for the stock windows search if you don't index a lot, windows doesn't recognize it as an installed app (when you only download the exe that launches instantly) and/or don't really remember the names of apps.
Still in the end, people have their preferences and some like me just force ourselves to use search since it keeps the desktop clean. So, "You do you."
I love how he casually dropped $320 on a mouse.
Bro the wood one looks so nice 😅
your vidoes deeserve wayyy more views. you are my favorite youtuber
thanks for the feature! don’t worry about the teammates, the mic is closer while playing
that last guy had a certified city view my guy. idk what it is about it, it just hit right
22:21 the view ... perfect place for a desk
interesting to see how different people's tastes are. the one at 10:30 was by far my favorite
I am 100% in agreement on the desktop icons issue. Nothing beats a clean desktop.
Honey get in here, Optimum posted!
Desktop icons placement is underrated!
Loved the video as always
On the 40% keyboard note: One does program a layout solely for gaming purposes with numbers to the sides of wha you'd use for movement and interaactions etc
15:05 It's a clothes pin!! We used them back in the olden days to hang dry clothes. Honestly don't think most kids today would recognize one😂.
It's always a pleasure to watch one of these.
love these videos; your audience seem to have some of the nicest setups i see around on youtube to be honest
many 40% keyboards capitalize on QMK features and the bottom row is almost exclusively layer buttons - you toggle or shift up and down layers like a caps lock, but turn the layout to numbers, characters, hell you could have a dedicated gaming layer and remap all the buttons to whatever you need them to be
Dude, I've been part of your channel since not too long, from the day I decided I need to step up my work environment at home, and build my first PC.
The OCD of the desktop shortcuts gets me as well, especially when they're not even ALIGNED TO GRID! 🤯
It’s nice that you don’t hold back any critiques.
that 3rd setup, although his setup may be low cost, has more followers and subscribers than most of the streamers who have overkill setups.
I really wish you'd make a video with the Mo-Ra 3 or external radiators in general. I think they look sick and want to hear your thoughts on them.
Absolute top specs, smallest possible case, Mo-Ra 3. Maybe even hide the case and Mo-Ra behind a multi monitor setup on the wall. Nothing on the floor, super clean, and only the monitor, keyboard, pad, mouse, and mic visible.
The first setup is close to what i would imagine my dream setup would look like
There is nothing wrong with desktop icons, which is what the desktop is for.
I just LOVE your attitude man ... could listen to you the whole day 👍👍
I'm with you Ali, clean desktops only! Hurts my brain to see all the shortcuts haha.
4:25 - Very nice of you sending that message to him. I'd flip if I got one from you.
15:30 - I agree, the most I have 10 icons on my desktop.
The slanted keyboard is just a comfort thing. I’ve noticed a ton of csgo players do this as well.
I tried slanted keyboard a couple of years ago while watching some streamer (don’t even remember who). Gotta say it’s so much comfortable for gaming, not so for typing tho lol
Sick video man inspires me to make my setup better
Missed that dope stream deck holder second setup from colin. That was sick imo
Desktop icon offender??? LOL! You killed me with that one.
Him trying to describe looking at many icons on the screen is like when the workers in Severance try to explain the numbers on the screen lol
Great vid as always Optimum! Quick question: how’s your experience with superglides and rougher pads? More in terms of durability, curious if the skates get scratched/worn, and if the pad gets any slow spots.
Thanks!!
To second this, would love an OT video on mouse skates!
He actually had me with that pepsi and coke debate. I was like no please dont tell me you dont have good soda taste. Now I just like your content even more lmao.
How that guy uses his sim setup is how I watch stuff while laying in bed because my desk is right next to it 😆
its nice that you showed some really messy setups. imo setups in the messier side has a more home-y feel to it like you can live there instead of a "streamer" setup because it looks like it's produced in a factory
9:34 I would class it as a comfy homeyinviting setup. It's still clean and organised though.
I also hide my desktop icons. I get so much anxiety when I see other people’s desktop icons sprawled everywhere
Everytime I see one of these I get really excited
This is the best video of setup review I've ever seen 😂
You have the best reactions to these
20:50 , this is the corsair 5000 series fliped on side with vertical gpu bracket
Great video, dude, thoroughly enjoyed it. Even got the Zaunkoenig M2K review lined up next!
The content in this channel is just on point
Really really love these kinda vids
Hands down one of the most generous vids I have ever seen.
i've come across your channel rather recently when deciding on what new mouse/mousepad to buy and i've been hooked ever since. really awesome job at conveying information and keeping it entertaining! :)
you hate chips
and you hate my balls
You raised some interesting points in this video. I think I'll definitely implement that desktop icon one you kept drilling. Not sure why I have them all there anyways tbh. Great vid!
dude that graveyard joke had me crying 😂😂😂😂😂😂
that setup in the bed is perfect if you have a broken leg/fot very smart :D
Can't wait for the M2K review, I've been using it for nearly a year
18:32
dimming the twitter portion of the screen to prevent epilepsy/seizures
what a legend
20:00 using the exact same wallpaper as thr left monitor how spooky 👻
him talking about monitor placement, Mine pretty much in my face sniffing pixels LMFAOO
It's very interesting to see the spectrum of cares given to each individual's setup lol
The reaction at 21:33🤣🤣🤣
