  • The International Menopause Society is proud to provide the interview series for health care professionals on current topics of interest in the field of menopause.
In the series, IMS Board Member Dr. Marla Shapiro interviews renowned experts on menopause and midlife women’s health.
In this episode Prof. Louise Newson will talk about “Menopause and cardiovascular disease”.
Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in women. Women who start HRT within 10 years of the menopause have a reduction of coronary heart disease. Transdermal oestradiol is a vasodilator as well as having specific beneficial effects on endothelial cells including improving production of beneficial nitric oxide and prostacyclin as well as reducing production of endothelin and angiotensin II which are vasoconstrictors. HRT is actually more beneficial to women than taking a statin or blood pressure lowering drug for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
The interview is available as podcast: internationalmenopausesociety...
The views expressed by speakers are their own and may not necessarily represent the views of the IMS

At the end she says there are "very few women who should stop". Who are those women?

Another very important part of the puzzle... what is the other thing that happens when a woman has the menopause.
She stops her monthly bleeds, a lot of women who eat not very healthy diets have an iron overload, it's practically impossible to not take in too much iron in the UK diet because of iron enrichment cereals pastas bread It's everywhere.
When women are menstruating they keep their Iron levels lower because of the blood loss, which is a good thing.
Some very smart scientists say that is the reason for the French paradox, the French do not enrich their flour, they also eat more natural saturated fats as in butter cheese cream and not poisonous seed oils.

Given all the scientific evidence to date, I’m sure a cardiologist knowledgeable about menopause and the role of estrogen in the cardiovascular system would have agreed 100% with Dr Newson’s statements. The problem is that cardiologists (nor any other medical specialties) get NO education on menopause in medical school.

Can you take hormones if you have existing heart disease? I wish someone would answer this question. Doctors seem to prefer to discuss prevention.

Yes, you can. HRT is protective of your heart. Watch the video again.

@@polianapolain I do understand that HRT is protective of the heart but I’ve heard two holistic doctors say that if you already have heart disease it cannot help and could be more harmful. I question that, but would like proof.
