The Real Reason Leaves Change Color In the Fall
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 жов 2015
- You've probably heard that leaves of deciduous trees change color in autumn because they lose their green chlorophyll molecules, allowing the underlying yellow and orange pigments to shine through. However, this doesn’t explain why the leaves change color in the first place.

"the world prettiest recylcing plants"
PUNNNN CITTTTYYYYYYYYY
+Alyssa Sipe Is the pun supposed to be something to do with recycling plan?
a recycling plant? Like recycling factory.. This pun is shit
Misclickable don't listen to that downer, this pun is beautiful and yes it's like a recylcing factory.
Alyssa Sipe Ahh... I get it now. Thanks :) .
Misclickable you bet
The visualization of the green chlorophyll molecules and their yellow counterparts was done really well! Clever way of including the actual organic molecules and their color transition.
I see what you did there.
Sorry, you didn't leaf me any option..
Chemistryisthegame lol

Ooooh I see what you did there.
HAHAHAHAHAHA SO FUNNY HAHAHAHAHUEHUHEUHEUHEUHEUEH COUGH
+qqq1701 i don't get the pun, pls explain
+Mr.Halogames recycling "plants".
Levi Langer OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I CAN SEE THE FUTURE NOW
+qqq1701 MMMMMMMMMM FUUUNNNYY JOOOKE!!
Thank you for this! A few years ago, I read on Wikipedia that the reason for the anthocyanins was nitrogen transfer. I really didn't know what it was talking about. I had an idea, but wasn't sure, but this certainly cleared it up :)
"Recycling... plants"

Those oxygen molecules at 0:56 are so adorable, I cant live without them.
Dat Pun tho. Leaf and go home, Minute Earth, you're trunk.
*FROM CROWD* BOOOOOO!

I felt drunk reading this comment section but it some how makes sense
I just realized after re-watching the pun at 1:07
+Max Jiang What's the pun?
+Marshall Mannella Hint: at 1:07: read, don't listen.
+Marshall Mannella Recycling plant. ....RECYCLING PLANT!
I don't get it.
George Kromidas The title of the paper where the chlorophyll breaks down is called "Safetree Manual"
We had a winter here when in March the temperature went up over 20 degrees for about 3 weeks. The plants started budding but those were killed off in April when the temperature fell again below freezing and it snowed until it normally stops more than a month later. It must've been very hard on the trees... Poor guys :P
With all my heart I thank you for the apt, positive and humorous quips at the end of each video. Total Happy Making.
Its Fall right now, and I love it. Everything is so pretty. To bad it only lasts for a couple of weeks. Thanks for the video. I learned new things.
Interesting! Would be great to see a similar video on the leaves of other plants (both as they grow and as they dry upp, e.g. if you forget to water a plant for a long time)
I have watched quite a bit of Minute Earth. This is the best pun yet. Hats off.
I really enjoyed this video! Thank you bringing amazing and insightful content!
Bravo on that pun. Bravo.
I HAVE BEEN WONDERING ABOUT IT!!! thank you for answering my question.
Leave the recycling plants!
+Aidan A leaf them?
+Aidan A LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!
+Robasiewicz LEAV HER ALONE
Wow, that was incredibly informative yet concise. Thanks very much.
Side note: Recycling plants -- Get it? Get it? I'll be here all week...
lol Love the pun
love the videos. always left with a smile on my face.
Awesome....I need to sit my kids down with this one tonight!
That was brill! Thank you guys! :)
Guess I kind of wondered why some turned red before turning yellow but never looked it up. I'll take that simple explanation for now, thanks!
I love autumn colors!
a few months ago i have watch bright side video on why leaves change color in the winter and i blieve that until i see your video
Beautification of spring bring ones hearts joy, lovers of colors sings of the beauty of the world,. Fall colors trees, Oh what a beauty to see , makes the world a pleasant thing to behold. Before winter takes a toll.
Love your channel! So educational x
Great video bro, I love watching every single one of them! keep up the great work
Firrrrrrst!
+David Johnson true I was first ^-^ but I didn't wanted to butthurt no one like that kid above me
Awesome video as always! Good job!
"Oxygen molecule"
Noooo!
Aside from that, I think this is another great video.
Nascent oxygen?
Nice one. I was just talking about this with my daughter, and seeing it as a video is great.
She has a video request: how can an igloo made of ice keep people warm?
To put it simple, it traps the warmth from the people’s body keeping the igloo warm in the process
Your passion for plants minute earth man makes me so happy!
It's been a LONG TIME since I heard a good pun. Thank you
I learned alot, great show!
My teacher showed us this, it was really helpful for my report.
the animations are as usual beautiful
Really nice! love your videos
Most of your videos make my smile.
Trees in autumn are the most beautiful. I wish they were like this all year long :(
The autumn leaves show how beautiful it is to let the dead things go.
love minute earth thank you for making us animations
It would be cool if you talked about mycorrhiza. The amazing world of the interaction between mycelia and roots.
He did talk about it.
But not in detail.
+Koray Acar I just remember one video where he mentioned something like: "oh there's fungi that help plants get nutrients", but there's way more to that.
And now I know why all the trees change in the fall. I know you were on my side even when I was wrong
What about the pink tree leaves in Asia?
Probably just a less intense version of the umbrella one
+MH DOOM Those are Sakura trees - Cherry trees.
+MH DOOM MF DOOM!
NRG Player metal fingers DOOM
Those are flowers and that happens in the spring, not fall.
every single pun... gets me every time
I know that you last video about this has something wrong, This is nice to know. NICE VIDEOS! Next fall, what would be the new discovery?
Safetree Manual. Damn. That's so brilliant.
I'm confused about something though, Wouldn't the leaves they drop fall above their roots anyway? So as their break down the ground above them will be fertilised and when it rains (or the snow melts) they could re-absorb the nitrogen through their roots. I'm guessing they probably just do both things to recover the largest % of nutrients they can.
i mean that might work if it wasn't windy but i feel like it usually is in the fall/winter time
@@crystalmolina2533 That comment was seven years old xD
Yay, a new video!
Beautiful video
regardless, i love the changes 🌲🌳🍁🍂🍂 love how nature works!
Fall is sooo beatiful!!
So many wonderful colours! 🍂🍁🍂🍁🌧☔️
“Recycling plants”... Love it.
Fascinating!
great, i love science. never learned this in intro ecology lol
Fall in a deciduous forest is one of nature’s most beautiful shows
I have also read that trees that turn red also have fewer aphids problems. Something to do with the trees becoming invisible to the egg laying members of the aphid herd.
1:41 WoAh HOLY HECK THOSE LEAVES ARE BRIGHT
I hadn't thought about how wasteful it would be if the trees couldn't extract any of the nutrient backs, and never knew the stuff in the leaves could harm the trees. Learned something new! Yay, science!
Wow we were just learning about this in school 3 days ago.
Wonderful pun at the end.
So, if one of those trees was put on the equator would they still loose the leaves? On the Equator there are no seasons, just perpetual summer.
yay, a video where I actually learned something!
Great video!
thank you!
Tree science is so dope!!
This was explained really well
Basically the trees say "Aight fam summer is over, lemmie get dem nutrients up out 'chall fam. It's finna get cold & I ain't goin."
Cool!
That is funny prettiest recycling PLANTS! Hahahahaha! I like that joke at the end of the video! :P
Thanks. Can you explain how trees winterize themselves
But why do they begin to reabsorb the P and N into the branches etc. Is it due to the lower of light intensity or lowering temperatures?
you killed it man
How does a tree 'know' when to start doing this? Is this a temperature sensor? Or like a measure of sunlight distribution?
Great Video!!!
Such puns. Many awesomes.
I love the video but can someone explain to me how does the change from chlorophyll into chlorophyll catabolite reduces the destruction by reactive oxygen? Does Photosynthesis still takes place ? I don't understand this part!
How to protect green in the leaves for a period of 1 year for which do you have any technology or chemicals.
so if a tree looses branches in the winter is it "costlier" than in the summer?
But what starts the process? is it temperature or lack of sunlight or something else?
I love this video!
Cool! I did not know that!
1:40 that's one of my favorite colors..
Loved that pun!
Trees are pretty awesome~
Lol... the pun at the end :P
what are your sources on, the anthocyanins beeing used as a shield?
Cause I had a little talk with my Professor who is a specialist in plant phisioligy and he said that it sounds like a great hypothesis but one he never heard or read prove on...
So do you have any sources I would really like to show them to him...
Seriously love MinuteEarth
ahh that pun at the end :p hehe :) loved this video
What I love about this channel is that it always tells you something you don't know. It takes a basic question like 'Why do leaves change color in the fall?' and gives you more than the grade-school textbook reason.
You expect some guy to come out and say 'THEY'RE ACTUALLY THAT COLOR ALL ALONG, DIDJA KNOW? DIDJA? HUH?'
But instead you actually learn something new.
Hilarious pun at the end!
Soooo.. How less effective is red at absorbing sunlight than green? Does the benefit largely outweigh the resource cost of producing the pigments?
These videos get me through school
I love MinuteEarth puns
Nature as it all work out trees retain minerals- nutrients from their leaves before they shed them, so the fallen leaves don't contain a lot of goodness but help the soil retain condition in the form of calcium, minerals in small amounts by providing food for worms and bacteria thus replenishing the soil great stuff.
I love red trees in the fall; I have a red maple growing my the neighborhood and I love the color. It's just amazing.
+spartan1010101 Dig it out tonight and take it to your backyard. Perfect crime
Juan Pablo Morbelli I would if it wasn't like 50+ft tall lol it's a beautiful tree.
+spartan1010101 then grab some seed pods from it.
Paul Mahoney I'll be long gone before They can grow into the beautiful tree I want it to be. Hopefully I'll be moved out by then lol
+spartan1010101
Do some future generation a favor, plant trees. Someone did it for you, pay it forward.
It's autumn! AUTUMN!!!
Can you please make a history of earth like the brief history of everything you did with neil degrasse tyson?
Way more to it than I ever learned in school, wow
Thanks, didn't know that :)
