  • In this weeks episode of iN-dEPTH we take a closer look at the Black Convict Cichlid. This aggresive cichlid is one of the most well known freshwater fish due to it's ability to reproduce like rabbits and be able to survive in a wide range of water parameters. Enjoy!

I just got 2 small ones with nice orange and blue on the bottom, I didn’t know those were girls. I was hoping for 2 pit bull type that can tolerate a very mean green terror. But I doubt 2 small girls can take the abuse. We’ll see

after a few frys they tend not to be as agressive when having their babies.Yes they chase the other fish when they get close to their babies but they dont attack to kill or hurt. The first 2 fry their gonna be real agressive but after that they tend to be much more tolerant.Hope this helps.

I keep hearing something about convict being monogamous ..
    Quick Q&A?
When convict ‘s mate-they mate for life? False!!!
this is so false-coupled off possibly but wit hundreds in ex:180gal
    community tank-
my 1yr. Experiment was a crazy Experience, most of what we hear is true, however-there are several myths floating about like #1
    again-in equal sizes & numbers-with
Equal female to male ratio-or paired up-they do tend to get very nasty-& pair off..however I’m 100% both jump ship/at any Convict related/enticement 100% tone down-living wit various different fish. As a Bass eats a sun fish when it’s natural predators are always present upon 🧼 soapy suds on top of the surface water
Sick? Naaa just -8-convicts got nasty & rough-ending in -well/hundreds, upon hundreds & nesting, guarding whenever I see the foam..I start to look.
It honestly depends on their size-but in general if you keep Convicts & dont sell them for a living-follow advice or it will be the end of keeping fish.
Trust me & you need -2jack’s -2Jags, -2true giant Blood 🩸Parrot(who would never mate with any of my Convicts) & his buddy -2 red fin shark-barb-8” these two r egg devours my convicts r three different colors & personal feel -the days of the black convicts-r just long gone-with pinks/snows/blue eyes/H.Red-pointers-I achieved all three colors without any form of hybridization-as these-4-are all convicts

i know this is a old comment but i thought you might be interested to know that convict cichlids can breed with another fish called a blood parrot and the offspring is polar blue cichlids so thats why they get along there really closely related polar blue cichlids are half convicts themselfs they will cross breed so you will be getting a nice mixed gene pool dont be surprised if one of your convicts pairs off with a polar blue and starts laying eggs these are my favorite fish even though they are cheap and not sought after and breed more then i know what to do with them the way they defend there nest and cutely build there little nest in the substrate by sucking up mouthfulls of substrate and spitting it out to prepare it for the babys they are adorable and they will fight fish 20 times bigger then themselfs which makes them very brave in my opinion lots of personality i like oscars too but oscars are so huge and im worried my floor is going to collapse from the giant tank the oscar lives in

Slap it in the gill plate no I honestly don't know how to simmer the aggresion in these creatures. My male takes on an Oscar that is 3 times the size of it's own body. Cichlids just tend to have this aggression, but may calm over time.

  • @Aquahound
    @Aquahound  11 років тому

I agree not all fish are blood thirsty maniacs, however, the general consensus is that the Convicts are an agressive fish and should be noted that they will be harm to smaller fish and even the big ones ;)

Sir, what about thorichthys species, such as thorichthys maculipinnis? They are very closely related. Do they need the same temperature for general keeping? I am wondering because I saw conflicting information online. Some recommend as high as 79-82 claiming it boosts the immune system, while other as low as 72-75 in order to increase oxygen saturation.

I've kept convicts on and off for years and just last year I bought a few, long story short, my pair had babies several times in the end only 2 survived (I let nature take its course, survival for the fittest), now I have two young males, one's bigger and he fights my catfish for territory! My other convicts died of a disease which I couldn't cure (inflamed fins, let me know if you know what that is)

Sounds like you have a whole mix of feesh. I know why he gave you them babies too ;) They spawn like rabbits that have gone rogue. I would suggest bringing them to the LFS and letting them bring burden to some other unlucky soul. Now I'm not against the convicts everybody loves a good convict but they will not do well with the mixed lot. They are territorial by nature and will stress out others and may even lead to death

Convicts are hardy as hell. One of my favorite cichlids. Second only to Oscars. As stated very easy to breed. The only cichlids I've ever had breed are a pair of convicts. And certainly the only egg layers i've ever had breed. I highly recommend them. They're not as personable as oscars (at least the ones that i've had)

I’m setting up a 40 gallon breeder tank for a pair of convicts. I see that you have a pleco in with your fish. I’ve been trying to figure out what fish I might be able to use as a clean up crew. Something that would be safe around parents and fry. I like cory catfish but I’m not sure how the convicts would react to them being in the aquarium

I just got 2 little female convicts to join my 13 inch albino Oscar in his new, huge tank, and they're doing great! I was scared he would eat them, but they're way too quick for him.
I got them to help clean up the tank, since oscars are so messy, and they are amazing at it. They love all the food floating around, lol.

Question. I was trying to see if there’s any chance I can get a small “clean up crew,” for a pair, and I was wondering if Kuhli Loaches could possibly work. Kuhli loaches are nocturnal and hide during the day, and then at night they come out and eat, basically being out of the convicts way. Is this possible??
