Aksel Hansen I'm not really sure that's true at least for standard. The card was essentially a result of Kaladesh and other artifacts dominating the standard format. It'll be a while before we have that situation again.
chandra had that challenger deck reprint that stomped its supply into the ground, it'll be a while before it goes back up. it will go up, just very slowly. hazoret's okish, she just sees fringe play.
I'm going to miss Kaladesh and Aether Revolt :( I know people hate on it, but I love it. The gameplay was fun and the art direction was amazing. My favourite art style in all of Magic.
Agreed. The art and a e s t h e t i c of Kaladesh was top notch. And there were some very well designed cards, characters, and mechanics that did a lot of work in the meta.
Another card I think is a keeper is Spirebluff Canal, it's a 4-of in modern Storm, sees play in modern Jeskai, Blue Moon, all the Wizards decks, and Blue/Red is a very popular colour combination in casual magic as well. Plus we saw what happened to the Mirrodin fast lands: Blackcleave cliffs is 48 dollars, Seachrome Coast is 20, and the rest are hovering around 10 dollars each.
Great video dev I just went to Gp LA from phx and I made my first day 2 I was alive at 8-2 for top 8 then 10-3 for top 16 and win and in for prize out and I scrubbed out my last 2 games to get there feels bad man. I wanted to thank you for all the standard deck selection videos you did because I really learned a lot from then and now sept 1st is the RPTQ so now we have our first day 2 at GP taken care of so let’s go top 4 and get tat PT birth!!! Thanks Dev!!! PS also got player of the year contender Louis Salvatto in 3 round 12 lol
Mister Christopher Walken Ballista, the secret kill switch at the heart of my Atraxa deck. When both your Astral Cornucopia and EverFlowing Challice are at 40 counters and growing, and you've got Hardened Scales and a Winding Constrictor, your opponents are looking down the barrel of likely hundreds of damage over a couple of turns.
Very solid list. I think some of the cards might not get too much extra value, but as a set overall, Kaladesh block will be one of the strongest in recent years in terms of post-standard value (Aether Revolt might be the more expensive set overall). Oath of the Gatewatch was touted as monster set post-standard, expected value according to mtgstocks is below $70/box. Sets with busted cards like Zendikar and Worldwake fetch over $200 expected value for a box. I'm not expecting Kaladesh or Aether Revolt to break the $200 barrier at all, but should be very close to $100 if not above, which you can't say of any block since Gatecrash. Gatecrash had shocklands going for it, that explains the value.
People don't play decks with Walking Ballista much at FNM anymore where I play, and I can't be thankful enough for that. There was a long stretch where every deck just had it in there and it was annoying as hell having to stare at that thing every game.
Ayyye, I have a foil Walking Ballista my friend traded to me for all my merfolk. Immediately went into a heavy sleeve and stashed in my box. A bunch of us bought all different boosters to see what we’d pull.
Dev, great video and I think you are spot on with the cards to keep. I'm agreed that abrade will see play in modern, but don't think the value will increase. I'm starting to make some of my own videos now, and was inspired by you sir. Thanks!
These are great choices. One which wasn't mentioned which I'd really like to keep is Anointed Procession. With all those artifact token decks EDH - we had Breya in 2016, and now we have Saheeli's - as well as the new nifty Soldier decks, this is one card I would bring with me. Locusts, Mummies, Eternals, Thopters, Servos, are all rotating out, but they'll continue to be around in other formats, and Anointed Procession is their best friend.... and we still have Soldiers and Saprolings around now (although Saprolings will have to be imaginative in how they can get that white mana).
I was speculating ballista would do what hangar back walker did in price after rotation. But idk you might be right. Ballista can just respond to removal whereas walker needs to die for the value.
Missed the legitimately-good-enough-to-be-banned cards, looter scooter, felidar guardian, and saheeli rai (the proxy ban). Saheeli combo has been piloted to 5-0s in modern leagues, but it's in a pretty poor metagame position right now. Energy and mono-red were also banned, but they were more deckbans than the cards themselves being particularly good.
Inspriring Statuaries is already broken now, with Saheeli the Gifted in Commander there is a new Eldrazi deck that just loves cost reduction. Walking Ballista is clearly here to go up in price, it also added a wincon to Commander decks with infinite mana.
i like walking balista as the number one card. you can combo it with rings of brighthearth and basalt monolith, putting infinite counters on ballista and kill a whole pod with it
I got them all, but I did trade away my 2 barals. Also, at least in my EDH playgroup, the 2 cards that have caused the most impact (aside from paradox engine) are: Approach of the second sun and Gideon's intervention.
I wanna really run As fortold in all my edh builds inorder to break Omniscience with its huge CMC . Throw a Clockspinning in there too with its added bonus of having buyback. What more could you ask for really
i dont see the legacy grinding station with sly req anywhere on google. im really interested in this deck because i *might*have all of the pieces for it
Hazoret and Chandra already see play in modern. Nothing really teir 1 though. I use hazoret in my budget hollowed one, and she's been good to me as a 2 of.
YO Dev! What about Rhonas or even Hazoret? Low cmc indestructible creatures seem like a card ready to get broken in modern or legacy. Also Abrade or any of the expertise cards?
Dude, chandra torch of defiance is a keep. It's a four of in almost all mono red prison decks in modern and legacy. It's also a staple in many modern decks. I can see it going up to $30-$40 a piece in coming years.
I pulled off a Heroic Intervention vs Fumigate once. The look on my opponents face was gold! Mirage Mirror is definitely under rated. Same with Paradox Engine. I only ever run one engine. Once they've seen it, they'll withhold their artifact destruction just to kill it. Giving my other artifacts more table time!
lots of Aether Revolt cards. This is why I absolutely bought the shit out of this set when i returned to MTG. Lots of hidden power but it was the Visions/ Weatherlight flavour that really pulled me to it.
Surprised not to see fast lands on the list. Agree with everything you chose though! Also could have mentioned nimble obstructionist, torment of hailfire, and spire of industry
I absolutely HATE getting rid of cards... but the sets rotating out were so massively printed compared to some previous years, I don't know if I'd worry too much about tanking all the bulk rares. I'll keep the mythics just.. because (hello Combat Celebrant...), and of course anything that's seen play in multiple formats. But I'll say goodbye to most of the energy crap since I don't see that mechanic ever getting support in the future again.
I'm not sure if Baral will skyrocket in price. I play a lot of modern and Storm is a deck that shows up from time to time, but much less so in the current meta. I speculate that Baral will go down to 3 dollars and then go up again to 4 or 5 after rotation.
Storm is currently 4% of the modern meta, completely overshadowed by other combo decks like KCI, not to mention the prevalence of aggro decks like Humans, Burn and Hollow One.
Throwing it out there, but Fraying Sanity is used in Modern UB Mill decks. I don't think people run a full play set of it, but they do run at least 2 copies - if not three.
Yeah, my brother does, too. It's pseudo "win more" card, but I find that it makes your milling far more efficient than two more of X mill card. It's a cool card that I believe makes mill a much better deck.
I've had opponents lose to their own Thoughtseize choices, taking a Glimpse the Unthinkable over a Fraying Sanity. Sure, you saved yourself ten cards now, but every future spell or effect I have is just that much more potent, when my life total is a third of yours. And Fraying Sanity also counts any cracked fetchlands, discard or cantrip spells, dead creatures...
Shadow of the grave, elite arcanist, intruder alarm, desecrated tomb, mana-dorkage of at least 2. Infinite bats. You can toss this into a “mono”blue deck because you’ll never hardcast it and it will surprise your opponents.
There are loads more that are alrady EDH staples or close to, some of which might or should have made this list. Like Ramunap Excavator, Rashmi, Blossoming Defense, Gifted Artherborn, Gonti, Paradoxial Outcome, Aetherflux Reservoir, Rishkar's Expertise, Lifecrafter's Bestiary, Commit 2 Memory, THe cycling duals, Nicol Bolas, The Gods (Especially scarab), Neheb (mono red one), Swarm Intelligence, Toremnt of Hailfire but above all hovers Panharmonicon...come on that needs be on there so much
Because Revolt isn't a real keyword, but an ability word, they could decide to reprint Fatal Push in any set without Revolt written on the card. They've never done anything like that before, but it's still a possibility.
Robert That's just not true. Many cards that only see play in Commander cost a fortune. Look at cards like Lighthouse Chronologist or Chromatic Lantern.
It’s still not a huge impact. Some cards spike and some “decks” spike but a card popularity is still not a large impact on EDH. The big-time staple EDH cards are already expensive due to their nature in the game. Duals, some artifacts, and the spells that are old/from old sets and haven’t been reprinted.
I hope Bolas will go up becuase I remember when I pulled a copy and was so hyped becuase it was $20, then it dropped like mad for the rest of that week.
Mirage Mirror so versatile; whenever I have used my Mirage Mirror it has been in a new way each time, other players have learned that if the Mirage Mirror is on the table to get it destroyed before sh*t goes down. LOL, Last time I used my Mirage Mirror to double up on my Panharmonicon in my Inalla Deck with Venser...#DangWizzzards ;D
Haven't watched yet but I'm guesding lots of red cards are on this list like Chandra, Hazoret, and soul scar mage cause they are played in modern, and bomat courier cause it sees play in legacy.
Where's Abrade? And, I know there are a lot of OP cards on the Standard Banned List - I think those at least deserve an HM, assuming they're not also banned in Modern, EDH, or Legacy.
0:40 Ooooh, that subtle dig at Rudy though!
MADNESS ooooooh nice1
It was BRUTAL!
This wasn't meant specifically for Alpha (or any UA-camr), but I knew people would think I meant him
Rudy knows more then he does.
I know you likely didn't actually mean Rudy, but I couldn't help myself, lol.
Dev, you missed Abrade, it sees main deck play in Legacy and already is in a lot of Modern Sideboard play.
Thanks and I love ur content!!
yeah abrade is an insanly good card might be an easier card to reprint though
Chandra ToD and Hazoret also see play in older formats already and probably should have been mentioned.
Genuinely one of the best cards in standard right now.
I'm going to miss Kaladesh and Aether Revolt :(
I know people hate on it, but I love it. The gameplay was fun and the art direction was amazing. My favourite art style in all of Magic.
It had impeccable lore and flavor. Ixalan and Amonkhet were good as well. I hope Ravnica is as fantastic, new, but still feels like home
Probably because it had A LOT of actual good cards. Not like the following sets.
It was also the new block when I got back into Magic, so it will always be a good set for me :)
totally agree
Agreed. The art and a e s t h e t i c of Kaladesh was top notch. And there were some very well designed cards, characters, and mechanics that did a lot of work in the meta.
Liked the video for "Im not a financial expert and nobody on youtube is but Im the only one who is going to tell you that."
I also like how real Dev is.
Gifted Aetherborn is a keeper.
The problem is that vampire nighthawk is the same card, it just also has flying.
Vampire Nighthawk costs 3, Gifted Aetherborn costs 2.
Gifted Aetherborn is more efficient for B devotion, if that's what you're going for
Jed Litwiller I stand corrected.
Gifted can't replace Nighthawk, but it can and should go in the same deck. Those two together stand to make mono-black Vampires a force once again.
Pulls Scrap Trawler out of his 50ct trade fodder binder...
How about Nimble Obstructionist, Abrade and fast / utility lands (i.e. Scavenger grounds)?
Another card I think is a keeper is Spirebluff Canal, it's a 4-of in modern Storm, sees play in modern Jeskai, Blue Moon, all the Wizards decks, and Blue/Red is a very popular colour combination in casual magic as well. Plus we saw what happened to the Mirrodin fast lands: Blackcleave cliffs is 48 dollars, Seachrome Coast is 20, and the rest are hovering around 10 dollars each.
This is a great new video series idea. I'm always puzzled which cards to keep (besides the obvious ones). Thx Dev!
Great video dev I just went to Gp LA from phx and I made my first day 2 I was alive at 8-2 for top 8 then 10-3 for top 16 and win and in for prize out and I scrubbed out my last 2 games to get there feels bad man. When both your Astral Cornucopia and EverFlowing Challice are at 40 counters and growing, and you've got Hardened Scales and a Winding Constrictor, your opponents are looking down the barrel of likely hundreds of damage over a couple of turns.
My list (in no particular order)
-Abrade (promo)
-Walking ballista
-Anointed Procession
-Inventor's Fair
-Scavenger Grounds
-Heroic Intervention
-Paradox Engine
-Panharmonicon
-Rishkar's Expertise
-Torment of Hailfire
-Aetherflux Reservoir
-Disallow
-mirage mirror
-fatal push
-Saheeli Rai
Very solid list. I think some of the cards might not get too much extra value, but as a set overall, Kaladesh block will be one of the strongest in recent years in terms of post-standard value (Aether Revolt might be the more expensive set overall).

Great video and list Dev! I am glad I picked up a play set of Bomat and Walking Balista! I also pronounce it as BO-MAT!
Energy and mono-red were also banned, but they were more deckbans than the cards themselves being particularly good.
Honestly I like shadow of the grave along with cards like reforge the soul and other wheel effects
What date is the rotation? When is it a good time to buy this cards for future use: before rotation or right after it? Thank you mate.
You kind of sounded like Yoda when you said ‘especially’ when talking about Inspiring Sanctuary. It was awesome
nate has a solo shadow of the grave in his hollow one deck. its good when he discards hollow one with burning inquiry
oh well, I guess I can use fastlands only for building houses of cards according to dev
Janshevik every magic player should know not to trade conditionally untapped duals.
While I generally agree with the "don't ever trade away lands" mentality... The fast lands are not really that good even in EDH...
Eric Vernon fast lands are good in edh, if you are playing fast decks. Especially 2-3 colored ones
*cough* Blackcleave Cliffs 48$ *cough*
Cliff is exactly why I hold onto them
Inspriring Statuaries is already broken now, with Saheeli the Gifted in Commander there is a new Eldrazi deck that just loves cost reduction.
Walking Ballista is clearly here to go up in price, it also added a wincon to Commander decks with infinite mana.
Would really like a playset of ballista's, but the damn thing is 12 bucks already, and now way to know if it will dip or just start climbing again
i like walking balista as the number one card. you can combo it with rings of brighthearth and basalt monolith, putting infinite counters on ballista and kill a whole pod with it
I got them all, but I did trade away my 2 barals. Also, at least in my EDH playgroup, the 2 cards that have caused the most impact (aside from paradox engine) are: Approach of the second sun and Gideon's intervention.
"no one on you tube is" -air horn- SHOOTS FIRED!
Remember the shadow of the grave and noose constrictor (or whatever it was called) “combo” that everyone loved when Eldritch Moon was in standard?
Lol I did a video about it
What is E.D.H? I know what you mean by standard, legacy, modern (kinda) but Commander and EDH are formats I am not familiar with.
I wanna really run As fortold in all my edh builds inorder to break Omniscience with its huge CMC . Throw a Clockspinning in there too with its added bonus of having buyback. What more could you ask for really
What about spire of industry/inventor's fair, they see play in older formats right?
Look for the uncommons and rares with insane foil multipliers for good long-term singles specs to improve your collection.
I do love how commander players look at sets vs players of other formats. Also, commander is a great alternate format for standard players.
You should post a deck list with the 15 cards to more easily mass enter them at TCG Player.
i dont see the legacy grinding station with sly req anywhere on google. im really interested in this deck because i *might*have all of the pieces for it
Also, what about Hazoret, Chandra, and The Scarab God? Not to mention Rhonas, possibly Regal Caracal, and so many other Amonkhet favorites.
MADNESS Chandra might in Modern but that's about it. 5 mana or above need to win the game That very turn, and none of the other cards do that
totally agree with the first 3 but Rhonas and Regal Caracal are pretty meh
Rhonas as quite win more in older formats
Hazoret and Chandra already see play in modern. Nothing really teir 1 though. I use hazoret in my budget hollowed one, and she's been good to me as a 2 of.
chandra already sees decent amount of play in modern and is a staple in prison decks in legacy
Rhonas sees play in some company decks. So still good.
YO Dev! What about Rhonas or even Hazoret? Low cmc indestructible creatures seem like a card ready to get broken in modern or legacy. Also Abrade or any of the expertise cards?
Great list. Another one I always thought might be expensive someday is Spire of Industry.
How about ALL OF THE FASTLANDS? Those seem a little important :P
Thanks for the video Dev!
Dude, chandra torch of defiance is a keep. It's a four of in almost all mono red prison decks in modern and legacy. It's also a staple in many modern decks. I can see it going up to $30-$40 a piece in coming years.
the two blocks look actually pretty decent in hindsight dont they?
Isn't Fatal Push the most played card in Modern that's rotating out?
I pulled off a Heroic Intervention vs Fumigate once. The look on my opponents face was gold! Mirage Mirror is definitely under rated. Same with Paradox Engine. I only ever run one engine. Once they've seen it, they'll withhold their artifact destruction just to kill it. Giving my other artifacts more table time!
Don't forget command makes some cards crazy expensive, like for example doubling season
this is the best mtg channel on youtube
lots of Aether Revolt cards. This is why I absolutely bought the shit out of this set when i returned to MTG. Lots of hidden power but it was the Visions/ Weatherlight flavour that really pulled me to it.
Do you think for us add-on will become unbanned after the rotation
Will be picking some of these on payday for sure!
Loving your content my dude 😁
Surprised not to see fast lands on the list. Agree with everything you chose though!
Also could have mentioned nimble obstructionist, torment of hailfire, and spire of industry
What about dual lands, seems like those are worth holding?
Please do the top 10 or top 15 decks after rotation, btw love the channel keep the awesome work
hazoret gearhulk and scarab arent going up?
What’s your opinion on Hazoret?
I can't find the grinding station deck
Bomat courier is 4 in the challenger deck so it's not a really good idea to keep them for value, only if you are going to play with them.
Nice video. Wish I watched this before I traded a majority of my cards on this list lol!
Another great vid Dev! Keep them coming.
Throwing it out there, but Fraying Sanity is used in Modern UB Mill decks. I don't think people run a full play set of it, but they do run at least 2 copies - if not three.
I run two. More than that can big down your hand and make you less than stellar play sequences.
And Fraying Sanity also counts any cracked fetchlands, discard or cantrip spells, dead creatures...
is EVERY card in the packs will be rotated out?
What about Anointed Procession? Seems like a keeper for me
Paradoxical Outcome, Abrade, Blossoming Defense... and generally speaking anything that costs 1-2 mana and saw standard play...
Shadow of the grave, elite arcanist, intruder alarm, desecrated tomb, mana-dorkage of at least 2.
Infinite bats.
You can toss this into a “mono”blue deck because you’ll never hardcast it and it will surprise your opponents.
It always gets me... do you actively look at the "cards" or is there something distracting on your right?
There are loads more that are alrady EDH staples or close to, some of which might or should have made this list. Like Ramunap Excavator, Rashmi, Blossoming Defense, Gifted Artherborn, Gonti, Paradoxial Outcome, Aetherflux Reservoir, Rishkar's Expertise, Lifecrafter's Bestiary, Commit 2 Memory, THe cycling duals, Nicol Bolas, The Gods (Especially scarab), Neheb (mono red one), Swarm Intelligence, Toremnt of Hailfire but above all hovers Panharmonicon...come on that needs be on there so much
What about smugglers copter? Might have potential
Paradox engine is worth that much, because it's a centre piece of a taking turns legacy deck. (read: untap all your moxes everytime you cast a spell.)
Because Revolt isn't a real keyword, but an ability word, they could decide to reprint Fatal Push in any set without Revolt written on the card. They've never done anything like that before, but it's still a possibility.
I remember a time, where "being popular in edh" didn't had a huge impact on the market...
Robert That's just not true. Many cards that only see play in Commander cost a fortune. Look at cards like Lighthouse Chronologist or Chromatic Lantern.
Oh. I forgot the "I remember a time, where..." in my sentence. xP
Robert and, gotcha. Just took a while to become a ton of people's format of choice I suppose.
I friggin love it. It means not everyone can have everything, but at the same time a lot of people are playing EDH
Could you do a video on cards that will stay in standard that you think will get better after rotation?
Jason Mcmaster He discusses that here: ua-cam.com/video/PTKyWgkZJ0U/v-deo.html
I hope Bolas will go up becuase I remember when I pulled a copy and was so hyped becuase it was $20, then it dropped like mad for the rest of that week.
Does anyone have a link to that legacy Grinding Station list?
Is there a way I can contact you to give a dech tech idea
Anointed procession, torment of hailfire, authority of consuls??
Ballista is a G! Get used to it cos it’s going nowhere in legacy or modern.
So good! Best card printed in a long time!!!
Thank you! You rock Dev. Keep it up
what about ramunap excavator?
So whats the story with master pieces then
Oooooooh.
That Rudy shade was real asf Dev.
1:13 Each time I see the "HM" on this video, or on any of your video , I can't help but think "Hopeless Masquerade".
I know, it's silly.
Can't forget my favorite uncommon winding constrictor he's a beast I'm my b/g splash white modern elves tribal deck
My only card to add is field of ruin. Uncommon lanx xestruction thats $5 bhcks and im sure will climb. The thing is amazing!
It's not rotating.
15. Metallic Mimic
14. Inspiring Statuary
13. As Foretold
12. Sram, Chief Edificer
11. Heroic Intervention
10. Mirage Mirror
09. Whir of Invention
08. Fraying Sanity
07. Bomat Curior
06. Paradox Engine
05. Fatal Push
04. Baral, Chief of Compliance
03. Scrap Trawler
02. Hallow One
01. Walking Ballista
Please make a list of cards you can't wait to rotate! :)
Scrap trawler/ Walking Balista are very important piece's of my infinite turn deck
how about chandra?
Always like watching youre videos i think its the couch (and cat) that makes it perfect :)
Haven't watched yet but I'm guesding lots of red cards are on this list like Chandra, Hazoret, and soul scar mage cause they are played in modern, and bomat courier cause it sees play in legacy.
No Chandra, Torch of Defiance?? I could easily cut any card not Walking Ballista to add it.
I think next time you should be a graphic for "current price" so we can see down the road lol
is commander 18 on mtgo?
Casual players love mill. So many times I've seen someone put together their first deck and its mill.
Where's Abrade? And, I know there are a lot of OP cards on the Standard Banned List - I think those at least deserve an HM, assuming they're not also banned in Modern, EDH, or Legacy.
