Great video - thanks! One suggestion for the audio, if you put it through Audacity you can bump up the levels (it's a little quiet). I have a Macro I created that bumps the treble & bass, then runs the Compressor to bring the levels up.
Good suggestion! You caught me on this one video though. The audio is not as good as usual because... the main mic did not record properly; so we had to use the 'other' mic from the down-shot camera. 🤦🏼♂🫤
I've promised myself that this is my next TI upgrade (along with putting a modern fan in the Peripheral Expansion Box, but that is a much more involved project, so I think I'll start with the power supply replacement. I won't miss how hot the internal DC convertor gets. They didn't call it the coffee warmer for nothing!
@@TheVintNerd Age has cost me my near-vision, and steady hands, so soldering has become a nerve-racking experience. I can use my multi-clamp to hold the parts (and my light-ring magnifier to see them, but my hands still have to direct the soldering iron. Question: You left the RF shielding in place. Is it still neccessary with the DC unit removed from the computer. I left it on when I replaced the 9918A with an F18A, but would really like to remove it for ease of future motherboard access. Is RF interference even still a concern in 2023 where radio and television frequencies have been co-opted by cellphones.
I just bought one of these and realized the pinout is the same as the Colecovision. This means the ColUSB power supply should power the TI-99/4a, assuming it puts out enough amps for each of the different voltages. I will be performing the modification soon and will test out the ColUSB device.
If you do the power wiring mod I show in this video, then the ColUSB will apparently work. However, check out my Newer TI-99 video about a new-New power board option for the TI-99. -Cheers, Steve
Mine needs a new power supply so I might as well design a replacement PCB with a switch and LED. Using modern TI power switching regulators of course. Unless of course someone has already done this.
I use a Keelog power supply for my C64. It doesn't have a switch, though. I'm not sure if I've seen one that did until now... Anyway, I'm not trusting that Commodore brick of death.
I’d have to venture a guess that the TI-99 PSU from Keelog has a power switch because the modification instructions has you bypass the TI-99’s internal board that has the unit’s original power switch. So, without the Keelog power switch, you’d have to keep unplugging the PSU to power down the system. 🤷🏼♂️😕
Thanks for the tutorial Vint Nerd. I must replace my P.S.U. as it's on it's last legs kudos.
Thanks for watching! :)

Good question, but I don’t have the answer you’re looking for. I always just put original parts back in as much as I can.

That's cool. Let us know what happens!
ColUSB does work. The only downside is there is no power switch on the ColUSB. There are USB-C power switches though.
@@cdoty Ok, Good to know. Keep an eye out in a few weeks. I'll be doing a different TI-99 power modification. 👍🏻
@@cdoty How's this possible for ColUSB to work on a TI99/4A?

Someone has. Search TI99/4a Drop In Replacement Power Supply on eBay. I’ll be posting a video about it in a couple weeks or so.
Your house is decorated very nice
Thanks! Nothing like being surrounded by retro in the studio :)
Don’t forget to jam in a new TSR-1 2450.

@@TheVintNerd True. And this puts the power switch closer to the user than a switched outlet or power strip would.
Oh yeah…..
Hope you enjoyed the video! -Cheers, Steve

🤣 Yes
they buzzed new. back in the 80s.. lol
lol Nice 😝
this is an abomination..... ;)
Well then, it is my abomination (and completely reversible); and I can live with that. Not everyone is going to perform the same mods. :)
