I was born in Lisbon but my parents immigrated to the U.S. when I was a baby. When I visited my family in Portugal in, on my own, I was shocked at how much they took pride in showing me all of the sights even though I know they have seen them a million times! Both my family in Monte Real and Lisbon drove me all over the place, took me to the coast, old castles and monasteries, the caves, and they never once looked bored or like it was a burden. It really taught me a lot about hospitality. The only thing was because I speak kitchen Portuguese, they felt the need to order for me at restaurants, LOL! So it was nice at the airport on my way back to the states, I went through the Portuguese speaking line and the security agent said that I did great speaking Portuguese. Hehe.
Another shock was that though both families were not rich, they both had 2nd homes near the beach. They called it "quality of life". They worked to live. Hopefully I will have a 2nd home one day, in Portugal! :)
You are very lucky. I experienced some of the kindest people in Portugal when I visited last year. We ran into some issues the first day...everything that could go wrong, did. I literally broke down crying and 2 waitresses in a small cafe bought me food, helped me find a working ATM machine and helped me calm down. Then one of the locals in the cafe let us follow them out of the city on the road to Sagres, because we were lost with no phone or GPS and I only spoke English. I've never experienced that level on kindness in people before. Eternally grateful.

if you come to Portugal please don't stay on a rental apartment, it is a really big problems for the locals now because there are no more houses in central Lisbon that we can actually live in, because they're all being rented by tourists! also this make the rental prices go up like crazy, like there are people who can't afford to live in their city anymore! PLEASE STAY IN HOTELS/HOSTELS it's really nice I promise:)

Aside from sushi in Tokyo, Portugal has some of the best seafood I've ever had in my life.
Funny thing, Portuguese brought a lot of seafood dishes to Japan. example: Fried shrimp

You pay for the meal, the restaurant pays the service with the money they win from the meal.
Sometimes people give 2-3€ to the waiter because they really like him/her, but there isn't the "20% of the meal in tips" or "if I don't tip they are gonna kill me".

Victoria, I hate the tipping culture of the U.S. It seems everyone expects to be tipped at least 20%, even when you line up for your own food and drink. It gets really expensive. I loved this about Portugal, even though I usually left a small tip, though it’s not expected.

Just came back from Portugal. My 2nd time in a year. I truly love this city. For the summer you can fly direct from JFK to Lis on delta. The people are very friendly. We went back to a restaurant in the barrio alto just because of the great service and delicious pork cheeks. The waitress remembered us and started screaming and hugging us. So special. One thing is the pick pockets are real. However they are nice. My husband's sunglasses were picked but after the pickpocket realized they were prescription he gave them back! True story!

A friend of mine bought shoe polish thinking it was hash. He is actually Portuguese, but has lived away for most of his life, so he had no idea that this is a (terrible) thing going on there. This happened in downtown Lisbon.

I visited Lisbon last week! What an amazing city. I think what shocked me the most was the diversity of the tourists and locals in the same place. Here in Spain, you really don't see tourists outside La Plaza Mayor. In Lisbon, it is totally different. There are travelers and locals all mixed and mingling together. This also applies to the night life as well! Even though I spoke English and Spanish, I ended up meeting people from the USA, Brazil, and France! We all got drinks and it was an awesome time. Definitely recommend Portugal for those who are considering traveling.

Mario o bispo da preguiça so,if the minimum wage is €635 per month,and if you’re house rent is an average of €550,could be more in Lisbon or Porto,you’re left with €135 for utilities,food,fuel and if you have a tooth ache,etc,etc,you see the picture.

I was shocked by the incredible quality of canned food there. we think of canned seafood as pretty much just tuna, but they had the most extrodinairy clams, mussels, fish pates etc. get one of those, a good piece of bread, maybe some wine. and youre set for lunch, easy picnic

If you are a tourist I think is better to use uber instead of taxi because some can trick you to pay more money by going for a longest route since you don't know the city
True some taxis will take you into a trip around the city just so you pay more.
if you are a tourist and take a taxi, ALWAYS demand receit or invoice! A proper one, not a piece of paper with some scribbles..... If you ask for that, they will not trick you. Always take a photo of the license of the taxi driver, and if you beleive you~re being tricked, ask to go to the nearst police station or call the cops... it works. believe me.

I knew there was an abundance of seafood but was shocked at how large the shrimp were. My Mom and I were in Sagres and Lisbon last August. Both times we ordered prawns (shrimp), they were as big as the lobster in the US. We kept taking pictures and marveling at how large they were.
You already mentioned it but still shocked that liquor and seafood were so cheap in Portugal. We were with family, would go into a local store in Sagres, pick up 5 bottles of wine (great wine, mind you!) and it would be like 6 euros. Many great nights drinking wine at night on the balcony of our hotel by the sea.

yeah, those small ones are actually river shrimp and it's called Camarao de Espinho. The price can go as high as lobster, around 70-80 euro per kg. They're extremely good, though, and you eat them whole with the shell. Love it.

That smoking comment seemed a bit exaggerated to me! I'm Portuguese and the majority of people I know don't smoke. And we are aware that it is very unhealthy. The other comment about hotels also surprised me - I've stayed in nice mid-range hotels throughout the country!
I'm a Portuguese living in Scotland and I don't think his comment was exaggerated at all. The anglos are absolutely obsessed with smoking.
They hate it with a passion. They'll stare at smokers as if they're doing meth.
In France, Portugal and most of Southern Europe, we know that tobacco is bad for you but we don't demonize it. It's socially-acceptable to smoke. That's the difference.
I think this has to do with the fact that smoking in the US and Britain is associated with the lower-classes whereas in Portugal, Italy and France, we still have a romanticised image of cigarettes being smoked by artists and poets sitting in cafés.
Hmm, OK. Then it is more a matter of attitude towards smoking than exactly of numbers (from a quick search, it doesn't seem that we Portuguese smoke more than other western countries).

1 - Depends on the place really. Just ask before hand / 2 - Yeah, we eat pretty late. We like to dine at 10, 5 pm just seems far too early/ 3 - Most of us hate bull fighting, but yeah, the forcados are a traditional, at least it doesn't harm the bulls as much as span / 4 - We really don't smoke that much, but we tend to let people smoke as long as it doesn't bother others, which is, you know, logical/ 5 - Yeah, our hostels re pretty good, hotels not so much, though you can find a few good cheap ones / 6 - We make eating an activity and e don't like to stick to time constraints. A dinner with us is a full evening ritual. Hey, sue us we like to hve fun/ 7 - We don't drive that badly, you should see germany, those guys go fast/ 8 - Yeah, they tend to go after tourist a lot, just bare through it, it stops after a while/9 - Yeah, we're pretty cheap. In case you care, a small beer here is 50 cents in some places, only in expensive ones is it 1 euro. Hey, the other day i boght half a litter and a shot for 1,50 euros/ 9 - Just get used to the pavement, it's not that bad

Depend, for kids, 9am to 1pm, for middle school can go from 8am to 6:30pm depend the day.. yeah we lost a lot of time on school, for my school was from 8:10 to 6:40pm

On the other hand, portuguese restaurants don't expect a generous tip. Tips aren't "mandatory" as in other countries

tipping isnt mandatory in any other countri, it may be considered polite but not mandatory.
@@guilhermecastro9893 By "mandatory", I think she meant it's expected, like it is in the US, and I think it's expected in Canada as well. In many countries, tipping isn't really expected. In France, for instance, they don't really tip as such, it's more rounding up the bill (although in establishments that cater to tourists they'll quite happily accept a tip). But in Japan, leaving a tip can be considered as an insult, because unlike in other countries, good service there is considered the bare minimum standard.
Airbnb is also an inexpensive option, you can stay with portuguese people see how they live and sometimes they enjoy showing you the city. Portugal is a great place for children.
Air BnB in Lisbon is not nearly as cheap as it used to be.

Relax, it's a travel video, not an indictment on your country. There are things that will shock you when you go to other countries, it's just reality.
And ironically out of all of the places I’ve visited in Portugal, Lisbon is the only one I’d not return to. (I’m half Portuguese 🇵🇹❤️)

I agree, Italian drivers are the worst ever ! I have driven in many in Italy an in POrtugal, and Portuguese drivers may be brutal but not extreme as Italian are.
It seems like every country in the world is now vying for the "worst drivers" award, except maybe U.S. and Canada. However, without a doubt, the U.S. has far more road rage than anywhere else, mostly because most people here are so smugly self-entitled.
Irish are very brutish. Italian are terribly messy and nervous. Baltic are strange.
Just got back from Lisbon and Porto and a few other places too and things must have changed a lot in 5 years since this was made. Drivers were so calm - very little horn honking and definitely I did not see speeding or craziness. As for smoking, I was shocked how little smoking there was - definitely more smoking than the U.S. but nowhere near what I've seen in France, Germany or Spain. Prices were still very good. Food was delish and people were incredibly NICE! Watch out for those slick pavers! You can definitely fall down. And there was lots of dog poop! One thing I was really shocked at was how modern and beautiful and clean (except for dog poop) that everywhere we went was...all the charm and beauty of Europe with all modern conveniences!

Portugal is one of those few countries where you feel at home from minute 1. Viva Portugal! (I only had the same feeling in Greece)
The smoking part is a lie dude. Yes people from different ages do smoke, no stigma in that. But we don't smoke that much. Now drinking is a different subject, we love drinking beer and wine
People smoke way less in public places than in Spain, but also way more than in the States.

Honestly, you'd be wrong. Being Portuguese myself and having lived many different countries I can tell that Portuguese people have a bigger affinity to smoke comparatively.

AND NOW THE FACTS:
1- Well, obviously you have to pay for bred, butter and starters. Why would anyone assume that any food in a restaurant would be free? Restaurants aren't in the charity business.
2- Beware your definition of "tasca". What you refer as a tasca (family based little traditional restaurant) in Lisbon isn't the same than what it is in the Northern half of Portugal or in most of the rest of it for all that matters. Usually, outside of Lisbon and maybe Porto, a Tasca is a very small traditional place where you drink wine and have little meals and snacks. And guess what? These are PRECISELY opened during the afternoon when the restaurants are closed. Here in Minho (North West), if you want to eat in the afternoon, you go to tasca where you can get something like fried dumplings, grilled cod, steak sandwich etc etc. So, in other words, Tascas in Lisbon are small restaurants while in the rest of the countries they are very small traditional businesses opened usually during the afternoon and that won't serve real meals and might even close as soon as 9pm.
3- Bullfight isn't representative of Portuguese culture but SOUTHERN Portugal. This is an expression of the ancient lifestyle of these regions and as soon as you leave "Ribatejo" (lands a bit north of Lisbon) bullfight isn't a thing anymore. Some cities north from Lisbon had bullfight arenas but these were only used during the city holidays and those celebrations were seen by locals more as an exotic exhibition than anything else as never in the history of this region were black bulls and campinos part of the human /nature ecosystem. Luckily, both in Viana do Castelo, Guimarães and Póvoa de Varzim, these shows are been prohibited as the fact that there isn't a real traditional aspect tied to the Northern lands and bullfighting, does not counteract the morales violated in this form of animal abuse. So, bullfighting is seen in the South only and you probably won't find it in the North.
4- Portugal is actually under the EU average when talking about the % of smokers in our population. 30 to 39% of males are smokers. The US have 20 to 29%. It's not that much of a gap actually.
5- Portugal as a lack of middle and lower good hotels at a good price? I believe most tourists would totally disagree. Sure, if you don't get out of Lisbon during prime touristic season you might see them sold out but, otherwise, you can absolutely stay in a brand new 4 star hotel during most days of the year from anywhere to 50 to 100€ a night with all sorts of accesses and breakfast. This is actually my area of expertise and i can safely say that Portugal as some of the lowest rates for hotels in the entire EU. This is even an established fact by everyone. Plus, the sheer number of new hotels opening every week trying to capitalize this Touristic explosion of the late is even being discussed as it drags prices down so much that hotels cannot sustain themselves during some months of the year (half of the Algarve shuts down 8 months a year, half of hotels in the country lose money from October to March). In other words, even though i agree that Hostels and Local Accommodation are great, this point is completely wrong.
6- So, you go to have lunch with your friends ending up spending the afternoon with them and this make you think that Portuguese people don't care much about time? Well, personally, i think your distorted perception of time in this country comes from the fact that during your permanence here you never had to really work and you saw your life merely trough the eyes of a tourist. Portugal is rated 11th in hours of work per day in the entire OECD. 2nd in the EU. So, yeah, the fact that you see people taking their time when they are on vacation, day off or because they are unemployed clearly have nothing to do with REAL LIFE. Also, to all people reading this, if you schedule a meeting for dinner at 7 and you get there at 8, in most cases, you will be seen as a jackass like in most countries of the world. Again, a completely distorted notion of reality.
7- The driving myth had to be present. Every single tourist says that the country they visit have chaotic traffic and maniacal drivers. I've said the absolute same of nearly almost country i have visited in Europe expect the Netherlands. I guess that comes with the fact that when visiting a new place we are often confused and lost making us look at confident locals as insane rally pilots. Now, a quick search showed me that the number of deaths on roads by 100k population is much higher in the US (10) than in Portugal (7). I will admit that Portugal isn't a text book example in Europe but to refer to it as a real problem for Tourists is a complete exaggeration as Portugal is nearly average in the number of crashes across Europe as anyone can see in available statistics.
8- Another complete misconception. Lisbon is, indeed, plagued with people trying to sell you fake stuff and drugs. This isn't a Lisbon only problem as you can have the same experience in other European countries in some neighborhoods crowded with Tourists. Now, where have you heard that Portugal have been "decriminalizing" most drugs? I never saw or heard anything about that as even smoking pot is still illegal. Please do not confuse police incapacity to do their job with the law. An advice to people: Do not do drugs on the streets as it is NOT legal in anyway and if you leave Lisbon and are in smaller cities, police will most definitely have a nice chat with you if they catch you rolling a joint or smoking one in the streets.
9- Agreed. It is affordable. Mostly because our average income is miserable, on of the lowest of the EU. And yet, you said that you can't find a good cheap mid range hotel.
10- Slippery floor when wet. How shocking and troublesome.
GabKoost Loved the sarcasm in that last one lol. And bullfighting should ALWAYS shock you, whether it's grabbing the bull head on or stabbing it to death. For years there's been petitons signed and manifestations against bullfighting in Portugal, as well as the demand to pull those horrid shows of animal cruelty off of the public TV. Taxpayers money is NOT for condoning that shit.
TV tax payer money is for what people WANT to see and not for what YOU want to see.
Do not impose your views to the rest of the people. This is a perfect example of the authoritarian, dictatorial and anti democratic behavior that Social Justice Warriors (group in which most Anti Bull Fighting activists fit in) often reveal and that goes against everything the allegedly stand for.
Although i usually am anti bull fights, i grown out of the tunnel visioned opinion of activists. My brain is opened enough to reality to understand the following:
1- Bull fights represents 0.0001% of animal cruelty. Thus, the time and money used in these protests are clearly not proportional meaning that this rage is misplaced. Tens of millions are raised in horrendous factories, tens of millions hunted for pleasure, tens of millions of pets being abused. People should focus on the really significative problems and not the minor ones.
2- Being against Bull Fights is dooming the specie to extinction. That's an irrefutable fact. So, really, what activists do is to push for the black bull extinction.
3- Black Bulls live a better life than most humans on earth. This is not a joke. It's statistical reality. They are fed the best stuff, live on the open air, have medical care, females to reproduce, excellent places to sleep in etc. Granted, they suffer a violent end. But their lives is much much better than all the cases stated in point nº1 meaning that it is ridiculous to fight this and forget the other.
4- I am not oblivious to the fact than men kind is dominant on earth and that it will ALWAYS use other species in its favor. Actually, accepting that is putting humans at the same level than animals as our instincts are the same than theirs. Denying this is the opposite. It is pretending we are divinely superior, thing that we most definitely are not.
5- This being said, i agree than unnecessary violence should be at the very least limited. That's why i completely oppose Bull Fights in the north of the country as this region has NOTHING TO DO with the culture that gave birth to this practice. It means nothing to the people and is seen as an exotic import. Therefore, i support bull fights in the regions where these are immemorial traditions of that people. AS LONG AS THEY WANT IT, IT SHOULD AND WILL BE ALLOWED.
6- It is absolutely clear that many people WANT to see bull fights on TV. Ratings say so and millions of people accept this practice as a part of a millennial culture. It is not YOUR place to tell me or anyone else what to do or feel about it. Specially when you might be protesting after eating a good steak for lunch thus creating the most hypocritical nonsense imaginable.

People are so beautiful, friendly and genuinely kind.
The water is perfect to drink from taps.
How advanced Portugal is, yet they have not let modern ways ruin their culture.
Most Portuguese women wear wedge shoes rather than stilleto; and wear Portuguese shoes, I never found them slipery.
Public transport in Lisbon is amazing and very easy to use, colour coded.
FYI, my entire Portuguese family are non-smokers...
I was never once asked to buy drugs. I was aproached by ‘non-Portuguese’ gypsies to buy sunglasses and jewlery. Ignore them, they go away.
Very very safe to travel and even at night.
Lastly, a simple 3star hotel, in Lisbon, was incredible! The enormous banquet of food... just wow.
Hostels are dirt cheap for travelers, excellent standards, but hotels are much on a par with Australia. On the cheaper end of the scale. 3star Portugal= 5star-plus compared to Australia.

Found out my DNA says Iberian Peninsula which I have learned means Spain or Portugal. Would love to visit there. I love Portuguese muffins. I am mostly British and have always had English muffins but when I tried Portuguese muffins I fell in love. lol I was born in America and have been here my whole life and have never been out of this country. My DNA says otherwise about me being American. lol I am 98 percent European and It breaks down to different countries in Europe including norway or sweden and spain or portugal and Ireland and Great Britain along with Northern Africa and the European Jews. With the driving fast I might fit in. lol I bet the food is awesome.

The bullfighting thing is just as shocking to most Portuguese people and only a very (very!) small percentage of people endorse it. The large majority of people here won't even watch it. Unfortunately, some powerful people still support it. We hope to have it abolished very shortly.

Just one remark... Number 1 shock: It is already more than 2 years (so even before you posted this) that law has changed! If they don't tell you in advance you have to pay for the starters and they place them on the table (without you asking for them) and you eat them, you can refuse to pay for them! One good advice... always ask the menu and check for prices.
And as an Western-European with great love for Portugal and it's people I only have this (cheap) advice: you are the visiting person, adapt your behavior to the local customs and try to speak at least a little of the language -basics like "hello", "thank you", "sorry",.... Don't try to behave if like you own the place. And you will find that people are a lot more friendly... (This is applicable for every country you go to). As a foreigner I didn't find anything shocking in Portugal, only nice surprises, maybe I'm in soul Portuguese? BTW Nice pictures giving a good impression of Portugal to the common tourist.

If anyone wants some extra tips on visiting Portugal:
Early June will not be crowded at all (except in major cities, where it will usually be crowded regardless-- like Lisbon, Porto, and any other touristy places), and it also won't be very warm either. I visited June 2018 and it was fairly cool weather and not very many people around. As for festivals and activities, those are mainly late June through August. Portugal's busiest tourist times are July through August, where it gets hot and a lot of people visit.
If you're going to visit (no matter what time of the year) bring warm clothes. It gets pretty cold at night and I regret only bringing one sweater when I visited because I thought it would be warm. I ended up looking like I wore the same outfit in every picture I took. Even if you don't use it, it's always better to be prepared.
A lot of people only go to major tourist spots like Lisbon and Porto. And yes, those are definitely places you'll want to visit, some other really cool and underrated places include Costa Nova, Algarve, Coimbra, or Aveiro. These are pretty "local" compared to super popular places like Lisbon, but still fun to visit nonetheless and have awesome restaurants.

About the timing, as a Portuguese it also upsets me, like you said if I schedule a dinner for 8, for me it means 7:55 but I know we will be eating around 9.

Since you liked so much lisbon, you will like even more one region of portugal that is the best, ALENTEJO, we have the best beach of portugal and the hotel isn´t that expensive... well, if we don´t count the traditional houses of carvalhal, that can cost about a 1 milion... but believe me, it´s beutifull!
