    UPDATE: I have discovered that Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road was gazetted as a Main Road in either 1929 or 1930. This means it is probable that the rock cutting mentioned in this documentary @11:17 was made in the early 1930's.

    My Dad built the family home and was the second house in Mt Warren Pk in 76. Our family moved in to the home January 77. This bush land was our playground . There was an old road that traveled from top end of Mt Warren blvd straight to the top of the Mt Warren ridge turned Right and was then the original Dump Road but on the Mt Warren side of Beenleigh/Beaudesert Rd. This I believe was the first track/ road. Originally the natural terrain beyond where Beenleigh/Beaudesert intersects the dump road was impassable. They had to turn either right or left , the Mt Warren ridge trail was a lot shorter trek into Beenleigh.

    You’re a man after my own heart Rob. As a youngster my grandparents lived in the Blue Mountains and I, like you, lived in Sydney. During my mountain holidays I’d drive my grandparents crazy by wanting to see “old roads”, i.e. bypassed sections of the Great Western Highway. I recall finding all manner of old roads, including the occasional bridge. That’s over 50 years ago now and I wonder how much of that is still visible. Keep up the great work!

    Great video! It reminds me a bit of Old Cleveland Road near the intersection with Creek Road. OCR originally a very steep route a little bit south of where it currently is. A short section of the original route (between Chris' IGA and 925 OCR has been maintained and upgraded over the years for local access, but the remainder of the road is now little more than a narrow track through the bush, mostly visible on aerial photos.
    In early 20th century, OCR was diverted north around the high ground. The power poles mark where the edge of the diverted roadway veered through the park on the corner of Narracott St. It then continued up Narracott St before curving south and crossing Creek Road just south of the Carindale Park n Ride carpark. Most of the pavement survives, and the powerlines follow the old road alignment for it's full length.
    Then, in the 1970s, OCR was straightened by cutting most of the high ground out entirely. This is the route followed by the road today.

    This was a great collaboration, Rob. I enjoyed every minute. I started to watch it yesterday but got sidetracked. So, after a productive day installing my mobile 12/240 solar system, I sat down to watch.
    I've hitch-hiked up and down the highways between Brisbane and Cooktown, and along the way, there are some really pretty patches of the abandoned old highway that are a pleasant diversion from trudging the main highway with your thumb out. There is a nice stretch on the northern side of Gympie. It's only about 400 metres or so but is enveloped by rainforest, with the highway running at a higher level but hidden by the canopy.
    On my bucket-list is to revisit a section of highway between Laura and Palmer River up in FNQ. Back in 1982, before the new, wide bitumen, gently sloped (relatively) highway was constructed, the Cooktown Development Road, as it was known, was little better than a goat track, and wound its way steeply up the mountain range. I walked from Lakeland to Palmer River back in those days, and the new highway was being constructed. None of the truck could stop to pick me up on the way up the range if they wanted to because it was so steep in parts that it would be hard to get started again. And the bulldust the gravel truckks were generating was insane! I'd like to camp somewhere and walk the old road again, just to remember what it was like when I was a lad of 18.

    Very enjoyable to watch, great project. This road passed the refuse station which is on the site of a gold mine once owned by George Fischer a German immigrant who operated an early Brisbane pottery at Breakfast Creek in 1865.. Fischer sold his pottery to James Campbell, built a house in Beenleigh which is still standing and regrettable lost his money in the mentioned gold mine. I am fortunate to have a chimney pot on my home from Fischer’s pottery.

    I think your 'old road' was in fact the route for the water pipe from luscombe weir to the old water reservoir between james st and hammel rd(directly below phillip st) created by damming the gully through there just west of the train line. From there the water for beenleigh was sourced prior to beenleigh getting hooked up to Somerset dam water. Also saratoga st wasn't the route the road took, the road actually used to have a dog leg that went 50m-100m over on the mt warren side of the current road opposite from saratoga st. the road veered towards mt warren side then bent back towards the cutting on top hill. At about 13:05 you point down to what used to be the dog leg route the road took prior to the late 70's. Saratoga st was created when the road was straightened from the route i'm talking about. Back in the day there was no development in the catchment of the gully above where the reservoir was located, development was only permitted after the towns water began being sourced from somerset. You can see a gap in the trees when you point at 13:05, that is where the road used to go. the aerial sgot you show from 1978 at 13:25 has the dog leg i'm talking about clearly visible. It was the straightening of the road which enabled tallagandra and saratoga st to be built. That aerial shot explains why saratoga st has the kink in it too, beenleigh-beaudesert road had a small dog leg over that side of the current road before it cut back over to the dog leg on the mt warren side of the current road, that is why saratoga street was built with its kink, before beenleigh-beaudesert road climbed the grade of the hill by having those bends. Hopefully i have conveyed what i'm saying adequately for you to get what im descibing... I grew up in beenleigh, we were the first residence in the "chapman drive" estate, between boundary and spanns road. 15 Oddie Rd. Spent all my school years at beenleigh from' 78-'89.

    • @walkaboutwithrob
      @walkaboutwithrob  Рік тому +1

      @The Paedophile Profit The 'old road' is marked as being a road on the 1870 map survey. The whole point of the map and survey was to find a workable route over the hills to link Beenleigh with Waterford, apart from the previous track that lead to the Davy and Gooding sugar cane farm. No mention is made on that map of a water pipe being installed between the weir and natural body of water at the end of Phillip and Reservoir Streets. As for the road you cite over Mt Warren; there have actually been at least two of them but both were used for foot traffic and post date the map of 1870. I have seen maps and aerial photos of the old track you mentioned, but they were never designed nor used my machine traffic.

    Thanks for sharing this history of how the roads came be in existence. I’m slowly exploring suburbs near me. I need to research more about some buildings an areas. My starting point was the BCC heritage listing by suburbs. Thanks also to John for exploring the bush land to find all of these roads.
    What’s your next project? Have you explored Eight Mile Plains through to Loganholme where the old Cascades Water Park. This area is also hard for me to navigate by food. Before the M1 motorway which connects the Gateway was not how motorists had to travel from Brisbane to the Gold Coast. I think Logan Rd was how travellers made their way down to the Gold Coast, this journey used to take over three hours. I’ve heard stories of my parents stopping where the Pimparma Strawberry Farm once stood before continue travelling down to Coolangatta.
    Another project would be the train line that once was in existence from Beenleigh through to Coolangatta (where the car parking is behind the Griffith Street Shopping strip is. I think I have some old photos of this site as my mums cousin would take this journey down to visit family when this train was in operation. It’s such a shame that they never kept this in place. I’m not sure if it runs along the same track as the current Beenleigh to Varsity Lakes train line. On my walks along Currumbin creek there are remnants of the trains journey near the Currumbin RSL club.
    I miss getting out an exploring parts of Brisbane, I’m hoping to get back to this soon. Please keep me posted when your next adventure is.

      it wasnt, robs mistaken. beenleigh beaudesert rd used to have an S shape as it climbed the grade out of beenleigh with a small dog leg towards saratoga st then a larger dog leg on the mt warren side going up to the cutting at the top, look at the arial photo from 1978 and you can see both dog legs, it was because of the dog leg on the saratoga st side that caused saratoga st was built with the kink in it. look at the photo from above from 1978 in the video and you'll see how the main road was aligned before it was straightened in the late 70's.
