After lots of work, delays, deliberation and a bit of procrastination, it's now finally time to tackle the face. We'll put the theory that the inlaid image of the original will assist in recreating a missing face accurately and with faith to the original to the test.

The gentleman who bought this painting, then paid for the restoration. Thank you for using your wealth for people to enjoy for years to come. If all well off people could be so gracious.
For those of you who want to know the story behind the painting. The original is by Theodoor van Thulden, and the painting is called Time Revealing Truth. It's the story that the god Chronos (Time) will reveal the truth (the woman) and she will be bare for all to see and beautiful.

That's really appropriate for the age we now live in.
The time is now for hidden truths to be finally revealed.
6:00 the first future conservator to look at this under black light is gonna be ticked off that the whole face has been repainted. And then feel sheepish when they realize the whole face was replaced haha

this is why he provides documentation along with the painting explaining the processes, of course he can't do much if it gets lost, but one would hope the conservator looks at the back of the painting and sees the large patch of canvas
"Time reveals the Truth" - it is a really fitting title for this painting.
But I hope there is no need for another restoration for a very long time. And the chances are very high for this, as such paintings would now normally presented under controlled climatic conditions and this varnish won't yellow.
They're especially going to be confused if they know who did the restoration, since we all know that overpaint is something that Julian is strongly against. Maybe they'll wonder if a different conservator got their hands on it afterwards.
We could imagine that 😀
There will be documentation about this restoration (these videos exist), so if that gets preserved and travels with the painting, such an event would be prevented.

This wasn't just a conservation, this was a heart transplant. Following B.R. on UA-cam has been one of the best decisions, and I'm continually astounded by the levels of ingenuity and sensitivity working in tandem.
I recommend having a look at blondihacks build her A3 switcher, twoodfrd 's guitar restorations and wristwatch revivals for similar vibes. They're the kind of stuff that relaxes me and allows me to turn my brain off while actually learning something.

The way I didn't see a face at all when Kit started retouching and how she gradually revealed it to me through her work amazed me!! I literally couldn't tell what it was until she brought it out of that damaged state!! Amazing!!!
The same for me. I wasn’t sure if it was a rock or a shoulder or what. But in Kit’s hands it became a men. Amazing

One of the things I have learned from having an apprentice is that you will figure out ways to make an apprentice's job easier that you would never have done for yourself. So your apprentice benefits from things that you have learned and things you have reworked for their ease. My apprentice will never have to have really strong hands, or worry about glass containers that might break. That sounds small, but it it huge.

It's a delicate balance shielding them from the trials and tribulations you faced and giving them the opportunity to experience those for themselves; to learn what it feels like to be overwhelmed, to get creative, to succeed... I like to think of it as more of a safety net. I don't protect Kitt form anything, I just try to be there so if she falls she doesn't hit the ground.

I once had a trainee teacher with me whose tutor told me that she was on the final weeks of her training because they were going to remove her from the course. The first lesson that I observed was technically perfect but had no soul. They considered her so weak that they had protected her from having to think for herself. I sensed something in her and gave her less guidance than she was used to. She had to make her own mistakes. She had to use her own ideas rather than follow "good practice ".
I was nervous for her final observation. The tutor brought someone with him from the university because he fully expected to be telling her she was off the course. At the end of the lesson, he rushed to my office. His only question was, "Where did all of that come from?" Not only was she staying on the course, but she gained first place in her cohort and went on to be a very successful teacher.
The university had protected her too much. I let her see the realities of teaching whilst gently guiding her. Thankfully, my method was successful. I'd got the balance right.
By the look of Kit's work and level of confidence, I think Julien has achieved the correct level of guidance to bring out the best in Kit.

During the video of the face retouching, I was like "It's OK, but... doesn't really fit..." and then you announced that we had only seen the first few of many passes, and when the final was revealed, it just fit perfectly.

For me he was visibly uncomfortable and not really that happy with the result. What could he say since they put him in this position? That it looks bad and they need to re do it? XD
@@anj000 For some reason I also had that feeling, that he didn't like it, but there's so much that a restorer can do, I mean the painting didn't have a face...

This is sadly one of the worst outcomes I've seen on this channel. It reminds me of this old lady that wanted to retouch paining of a Jesus.
@@anj000 That's the impression I got too. I showed my gf the restoration vs the original and she agreed that it looked pretty bad. I think trying to replicate the original face the way they did was a bad judgment call. Even though the painting is supposed to be a copy of the original, the proportions and everything are never going to line up perfectly. So you get a weird misshapen face that's a mixture of the original and the copy that just does not work and looks extremely odd.
I compare it to Mrs. Potato Head lol
@@anj000 I think you and the others who believe George was disappointed are misreading his voice and body language. He looks to me to be overwhelmed with the emotion of seeing the thing whole again. That tremor in his voice is not from negative emotion. Quite the contrary. He's trying not to cry on camera.

It’s really lovely to see Julian and Kit retouching at the same time ! I’ve wondered about how she would approach retouching a painting. She’s incredibly skilful and you’re a great teacher!
So thankful to the Hermitage for their assistance in rescuing this beauty! This experimental work was a success, and will help other works to be saved as well!
I know its not related to this video but this is the community i thought would understand the most. In doing my family tree i found that my 10x ( i think ) great grandparents were painted by Rembrandt. Their paintings are unusual in that are full length, not just head and shoulders and are hanging in a gallery in Boston. I was so excited.
It’s amazing how you can watch it go from ‘what is he doing’ & ‘that looks like crap’ to ‘oh my goodness’ and ‘how did he do that’. I was hoping for a bigger reaction by the owner but really, what is bigger than speechlessness? I think if he had been reminded of the before picture first, he would have been even more speechless. And that before picture didn’t even show the depth of destruction that had been wrought on that canvas.
The shadow over the lip looked like a mustache for just a moment and gave me a chuckle. The talent and skill are just magical.
I had the same idea. Just give her a mustache for shits and giggles, the paints are fully reversible after all...
I got Napoleon Dynamite vibes for just a moment... and then he smoothed it out and made it match the rest of the lighting. So much fun to watch.
I'm a "drawer" not a painter. One of the main reasons, despite decades of being an artist, that I've always been such a terrible painter is that because of how the paint layers work, a lot of the time the way to make something look great requires multiple layers and passes that - to be honest - make the whole thing look like crap for a while.
When watching someone else work, this can lead to what we experience watching Julian - that amazement of "how did that end result come out of the process I saw?"
When it's your own work, however, getting past those "yes this looks terrible but it's supposed to look terrible but what if it just keeps looking terrible?" stages can be quite a challenge.
The greatest testament to a teacher is when the student surpasses the master. I've been pleased to take young folk and watch them grow and have many times fell under their control in time. It never hurts but always brings a smile. Kit's growth is a double joy, talent given freedom to grow and a tutor encouraging it. This is the best first five minutes of a video I've seen in a long time. Regards from Scotland.

I'm no master of crafts, just a radiologist who also teaches students and younger doctors "the ways of looking inside the patient without even touching him" (as one of my own professors described our specialty many years ago). The only thing that makes me prouder than solving a complicated case myself is when others praise one of my former students, feels like I'm doing something more than just my regular job.
Possibly because I throw anything else I’m watching on UA-cam to go to Baumgartner this feels so strange. No matter the painting’s title I can only see a young woman in the terrible position of being helpless and about to be gang raped by the men holding her. I wish the artist had the need to hold such a woman who has just survived such a violation, pain and horror. However, since this painting and several copies exist, the scene must appeal.
@@wandapease-gi8yo When this painting was created recreations of the stories of gods and men,ancient heros and heroines of Rome and Grecian legend, their interactions and the outcomes were very much en vogue. Learning the classics was a part of young man's education. Great meaning was encapsulated in the paintings and discussion of the topic was prolonged, loud and opinionated. The creation of the painting, viewed at face value does not imply agreement with the content.
Your final sentence is loaded and pointed very squarely at those who view the work of art, painting those who view it as complicit, voyeurs or worse, would you have it destroyed, it's story, history, lessons lost to time?
However face value has clouded this issue. There is a very good explanation of the picture in the comments. Despite the face value, the content actually depicts Chronos the god of time taking the beautiful young woman who will in time have her true character revealed and her true nature beautiful or vain and ugly revealed to those currently clamouring for her attention.
Now you know she is being dragged away by time from suitors does the picture mean anything else to you?
I see a lot of fine art conservation documentaries. For me, Julian sets the bar for the entire profession. He is the gold standard. I compare other conservators technique and commentary to his and sit in judgement like a proper armchair critic! Bravo Julian,

Idk about that. He gets a lot of criticism too. From people who are conservators or art collectors/critics.
I just happened to be watching an... "expert" from a museum working on a painting and retouching before removing the old resin sealant.. I thought.. Oh Julian would never do that.. So yes absolutely agree Julian is fantastic and thorough in his work

@@a.kaiser8965 Isn't that the point though? At this point, everyone he works with knows how he does it. He doesn't see them as relics, just paintings. Also, it's just an inlay with color that he painted over, so it isn't this cheap cut-and-paste. I don't know anything about this work, so I won't touch if it is a good restoration, but the customers come in with a knowledge of how he does it.

Ahhh, I fall asleep to Julian. (Sorry Julian) These videos have been a bit of a life saver when in the midst of life crises, panic attacks and insomnia; the soothing voice, the Belgian linen, the wash kozo, the dabbing, the scraping, the tacks, and the transformations have calmed my "soul" and helped me get some rest. Sometimes I have to go back to re-watch videos two or three times, just to see the end.

Watching a grown man become emotional when the painting was unveiled was perfect. Clearly, Julian, you managed to articulate, with a brush, the perfect missing pieces. I've been watching this channel for a couple of years now and I think this restoration is one of the best. A masterpiece within a masterpiece. Well done. Well done indeed. This is truly stunning.
I remember him doing a restoration on a painting years ago that was a portrait with a large part of the face missing. One eye was gone, and the final result was nowhere near as successful as this total face transplant. This work is totally convincing.

I can't imagine what that would be. Without the photo of the original, any restoration of the face would be completely conjectural. It was a stroke of luck that the original was able to be identified from the copy. Julian's ability to match the infill to the original was a complete success.
As a side note, I don't believe that either the copy or original was executed by a top-tier artist. "Time revealing Truth" is not a rare subject matter. I've seen more sophisticated versions of the same subject.
Yes, it takes two parties to preserve art for posterity: the one willing to spend money on it and a talented restorer.
Both do this not only for themselves, but for everyone who appreciates art and can therefore continue to enjoy it in the future.

I didn’t realise how literal you’re being when you talk about bringing a picture back to life. You started off by painting her face as a corpse and little by little brought her back to life

Seeing her face come alive was an emotional experience. The bold strokes had me thinking oooh. Then you blended beautifully and it was all meant to be. You're correct when you say I could have watched that all day. Totally enthralling. Bravo Sir, and thank you.
It is amazing to notice how her face "moves back" to match the original's position and expression and yet, how well you incorporated that shift into this canvas and its composition to re-form a seamless figure! Kudos!
This work is fantastic, but i wonder about the change in facial position. This version is a much closer match to the original. But, it appears that the artist of this version had the woman looking more directly at the viewer. You wouldn't know this with the face missing, but the scan showing the reveal clearly shows the difference in facial position. Was there a message in this subtle change? Still, fantastic work.
I was so nervous watching the repainting of the face. It was like watching a tightrope walker. That was truly amazing. Such a great team effort and fantastic storytelling.
The restoration of this painting created a masterpiece from a disaster. As an artist, I am in awe of Julian's skill and empathy for the intent of the works of art he encounters. I truly enjoy watching (and learning from) these wonderful videos. Thanks, Julian (and Kit.)

It's absolutely crazy how on point you were. Something felt off the whole way through, even those each individual part you worked on seemed right, until the eyes and teeth were done the entire thing felt wrong. Once you got those last parts finished everything just suddenly clicked. It was very satisfying

The owner was very emotional and struggling not to show it on camera. It is not just the best work that I think I've seen on Julian's channel, but quite possibly the best that I have ever seen anywhere. Such amazing talent from both Julien and Kit.
Julien has shown the feelings of a true teacher in denying that Kit's achievements are anything to do with him. I was many years into my teaching career before I could accept compliments about my students' achievements.

I watched a video on UA-cam that reported some less than stellar reviews and critiques of your methods and pricing.
I think those who are calling your methods "unnecessarily excessive" are the ones who, on their best day, could not match your standards on your worst day.
Case in point: this result
I watched another person restore an artwork, and they themselves had nothing bad to say about Julian, but some of the comments did. The most insane part was that the restoration in that video was not that great, you could clearly see the repair.
Never seen that in Julian's work, yet the comments in that video were critical of Julian's work, and not the artwork that clearly looked like it had been repaired.
I'm not going to claim to be an expert on art restoration, but my untrained eye is very impressed with all of Julian's work. It's not just good enough for me, but many of his recurring clients including galleries and auction houses. It's one thing to be biased based on your relationship with a person, but if you're running a business and have money on the line, you're not going to accept subpar work, much less continue to seek it out.
Couple that with the fact that God himself could descend from heaven tomorrow and heal all the sick in the world, and people would still find a reason to call him a hack and a bastard. And that's why I love the internet.
Honestly, if the Christian God descended and performed miracles like he did as the caring Jesus Christ they would call him the most leftist person derogatorily for really caring about everybody equally. They would probably only relent when he healed their families.

As a long-time viewer I know your work is astounding but this - THIS - truly is an amazing achievement.
Never not amazed no matter how many times I watch your videos at what you do. And even though I know how skilled you are at the retouches and that it always works in the end. I still get slightly nervous watching the process. The eyes, watching it come to life... breath taking. Slightest colour change accenting the Iris. I was expecting the typical white in the pupil to show the light but instead you didn't have to do that to make the eyes come alive. Astounding 😊❤️

lol what are you talking about ? The important work made by Julian and the pretty small retouching (dirty work) that are many on this painting made by Kit. We can say Kit is pretty awesome assistant for Julian that making great job on assistant works.

@@jcoolverine3483wow….did you not LISTEN to ANYthing said in the video at ALL? It’s not a bloody competition. They’re working together to bring this piece back together. Kit is an apprentice, not a servant…..she is learning and stretching her knowledge under her mentors watchful eye.
Always a finishing touch to these videos when the owner is commenting about the painting both at the beginning and at the end of the restoration. Great video series and worth the time spent watching.

That face added a totally different vibe to the paining. I was almost sure that she was scared, or in almost agony, or screaming… but this face shows she is chilled out and relaxed, as if she is adored rather than forced
Just found this channel and I'm glad that I did. You can't beat videos like this that provide something you simply can't get from short format videos. Listening to a professional go into details about their trade and their process of problem solving while displaying thier skills honed over years is a work of art in it's self. Did I spend almost an hour of my day on UA-cam juat now? Sure, but I feel enriched and enlightened, and who knows, maybe at some point in the future I will put this video to good use when faced with a problem of my own.

The process and astounding revelation brought tears of joy. My late brother was an artist who painted in oils. As amazing as giclee reproduction technology is, the giclee falls flat when presented next to the original painting. He would paint over a giclee, but as Julian demonstrated, it's a one shot deal unless you have the original to work from.
When Julian said that he wanted it out of his studio, I understand him. A work such as this saps the energy and creativity out of you while it in your presence.

I can’t believe you have made me so invested in a painting I really don’t like. Don’t get me wrong, the restoration work on it is beautiful and seriously impressive. But the painting itself honestly creeps me out. Which is why I love art George looked at this and found beauty and I found something different but it evoked strong emotion in both of us regardless. But aside from all that, I honestly treated up at the final reveal. Because even tho I didn’t personally connect with her, the care and love you brought this old girl back to life with is touching.
There are no words to express how much joy your videos bring to my life. It is a similar experience to walking into a museum and being showered with the beauty of a great painting. Thank you.

The work put into the restoration of this painting…Wow. And the finished piece is nothing short of amazing. I must say that, for me, the part that moved me most was seeing Kitt work in the forefront on this piece and hearing what Julian had to say about her, her skill level and how she is an invaluable resource to him. I remember when Julian began looking for an apprentice and when he first introduced Kit to his viewing audience. I remember welcoming her and wishing her well in her new position. And now, to see her showcased and praised in this way by Julian, this Master Restorationist, to hear him speak so highly of her, well, it really touched my heart and rendered me misty eyed.🥹 And yes, it’s quite obvious that Kit is a great student! It was almost like watching the master restorer himself, color matching and dotting only where there was a void! You’ve taught her well, Julian, and I’m so proud of you, Kit! Julian, I will preface this by saying that my artistic skills hover just above eating crayons and playdoh and just under being able to use an Etch-A-Sketch, but where I do have an exception level of "talent" is in reacting to good art and music...on a deep emotional level. When Kat removed the canvas and revealed the finished piece, tears instantly formed. Wow...what an emotionally powerful work of art. When you were discussing the emotional aspect of creating/restoring art, you were not joking around. That face...that lovely face....seeing her in all of her innocence and turmoil...my heart felt the rightness of that painting, the power of that painting. You really maintained the emotional power of the original artist's work and have preserved it for generations of art lovers to come. Thank you for sharing this...and all your other...videos for those who know that Burnt Sienna is the only crayon color that has its own distinct flavor LOL.

It was so good to see Kit retouching and hearing how much respect you have for her and her work. I think this is my favourite video so far but I always say that.
I think the face needed some more passes. And I say that as constructive criticism because it was clever to use a print and paint on it from there ...but I wonder if that actually held you back because it dictated the placement? When I go back and forth between the original painting and this artist copy the mouth is not small enough (Raphael style). There are also a few odd distortions on where the face bends making it look like her left cheek was slapped and we're getting the slow mo reverb as her face scrunches the opposite direction.
It's still well done and OBVIOUSLY better than what was there--but the face does stand out from the rest of the painting as a different style and it doesn't quite fit. I hope you don't take this badly because you're obviously very skilled and there's timelines and budgets to consider. But this is your first video I haven't loved the result on, and I have seen and loved ALL your videos. One doesn't expect perfection, but I don't think this quite met your usual quality standards.

The first video really had me guessing and I wasn't sure how this could be restored, but as always I'm astounded.
And as a painter I entirely understand the point about knowing when to stop rather than just carrying on regardless. If the passion isn't there (even for the moment) that can show in the work. I have numerous paintings I plan to get back to, and do, when the mood strikes me. I learned early on that if you just try to get it done to meet a deadline you often lose the soul of the piece and you end up going back to do it again anyway.

The face looks distorted, isn't it? Like the perspective doesn't match? Looks like the copyist used a different angle and Julian, having employed a repro from the original, missed a bit.

I cannot imagine this restoration was cheap, I don't understand purchasing and restoring a COPY. Did the rich guy think he found an original or something?
