    I don't care what anyone says Christy Ring was the greatest Hurler of all time sure shefflin won more medals but do remember he had a team of mostly great hurlers to so he had a lot of help getting there but with Christy he often had to do it himself he carried Cork to many victory's and saved them from the jaws of certain defeat he did all this back in the day when the back door system didn't exist and training was far less good his hurling career spanned an amazing 4 Decades he was an icon of Hurling and he inspired a generation of hurlers even Sheflin would have admired him growing up it is an absolute tragedy he died in 1979 aged only 58 years old never drank or smoked in his life and was in good health just one day out for a walk he just died out of nowhere 1920-1979

      You are spor on. John Doyle, that teak yough tipp great, ring adversary, said it best. He said " Ring won 8 all Irelands for cork, tipperary won 8 all irelands for me". That summed up how pivotal ring was to cork.

    No doubt about it. One of the all times greats. Skill wise I believe he's the best we've seen. Greatest hurler of all time - very hard to compare past players with the modern day players as the game has evolved so much since Rings time. Nevertheless thanks for posting this video. Love it!!!

    He had lovely stick work with a bas half the size of the modern hurl, you just have to look at the strike on the line all and the twenty one, yes the skills of the likes of TJ and Richie and Joe today are on a different level but they have had the benefit of seeing all the tricks that the other greats have done in the past and they have developed them even further.

    hurling is all in the hand now...possession is everything. You can`t compare sport of the past with modern age....nobody from the past could beat Usain Bolt, Serena Williams or Tiger Woods, at his best. Christy was the best of his day, attracting phenomenal crowds just to see him...even in this film, when he was well past his peak, his skill level and technique was incredible...and no helmet!

    I agree with you - but the problem is the difference between passion and love of tthe sport against the kudos that comes from coaches and parents - some kid want it and love it - some kids just play - hurling is a vocation - it's not an easy skill like fiddle you must practice every day = buut videos like this will inspire a champion of the future - you can't want to be a champion and try to be one - a champion is an award placed upon you in recognition of the work you have put in

    • @pinkitypink6246
      @pinkitypink6246 7 років тому

      Totally agree that it is a vocation. It's also like a martial art. There is so much to perfect and understand. The science and balance of the stick a very important part. The new style sticks have it all wrong. The bás is not thick enough. They ate almost like paper hurls. The handling of hurley and sliotars has to be an obsession and addiction. This is pure beauty, advanced skill and technique that can only truly come after many hours of getting to know field ball and hurl intimately.

  • @chilled91

    Just to ask does anyone find that they hold the hurl differently from other people? i am right handed but i put my left hand to the bottem but this in turn makes it difficult to strike with my left unfortunately. I dont know why i do this but its just what felt natural in the beginning. Anyone shine any light on this?

  • @Munster0099
    @Munster0099 12 років тому

    @chilled91 It's whatever way u feel most comfortable with, I am right handed and use my right hand on the hurl but other players on my memo rangers team do it the opposite so it doesn't really matter asking as ur comfortable the way u swing

    But what you forget Aragorn is that if he were playing today he would be training as they do today. A player in any sport can only be judged against contemporaries. Literally every player he played with or against over 25 years regarded him as the greatest. Of course fitness levels have changed but anyone can produce gym rats charging round a pitch. Seldom do we see a player universally acknowledged as the best by all his peers. Ring is one such player.

    The sport has changed. Foir one thing refereeing is so radically different that it has fundamentally changed the engagement between defence and attack. Ground hurling has disappeared as well now that refs allow runners run unharried.. You say the modern player would smoke the past. The only difference is fitness. that could be dealt with in any gym. One judges based on ananysis by contempories.

    • @elvisbrando6523

      @@mikeryan7213- Indeed, and much of it is about psychology and the level at which the players back then imagined it was the peak of the skill- they would have improved as the conditions and training techniques did, as, I believe, they were tougher men from tougher times. Just look at the strength in Ringy's arms, it wasn't from any damn gym and protein shakes!

    How many times have you seen him play?.Ring was undoubtedly a superbly gifted hurler but i just cant stand this mentality of "Nobody will ever be as good as Ring".Its easy to say that when so little footage of him playing actually exists!.& normally this word of mouth tripe gets ridiculously exaggerated.DJ Carey, Henry Shefflin, Tommy Walsh,JJ Delaney, Nicky English, Ciaran Carey, Paul Flynn, Ben O'Connor,B Whelehan would be all up there in my view.Modern era is by far and away more skillfull.

      It's like comparing apples and oranges. If you could transplant the greats from the past and give them the benefit of modern training fitness and conditioning then of course they would still be great in the modern game. Skill, courage and will to win will prevail in any era. There have been great players in the last 20 years, wouldn't agree with many on your list,.ring himself said, let no one say the great players all belong to the past, they are with us now and yet to come.

    If you were good back then, there was a good chance you'd be known as a Great without putting in much effort, especially if you were from Cork, Tipp, or Kilkenny. But if you are a good player now you have to be twice as good as Ring or Mackey in order to be regarded as a Great.. still regard DJ Carey as the Greatest..

      D J Carey? You're having a laugh. The man who was held scoreless in countless all Ireland finals. Yea he had speed and skill, but didnt deliver when it mattered most. Ring drew tens of thousands to matches in those days. Those people weren't fools. Ring himself said, let no one say the best hurlers belong to the past, they are with us now and yet to come.
