Hearing you play this, I am still astounded at your touch, tone and musicality...emotional, moving, perfect for the song. I remember you generously teaching me how to get your great delay setting on my H3000...I remember it like it was yesterday:-)
Thompson is a BEAST in the studio. And the song itself means something to me. My sister’s youngest son was getting married. He called with a short notice asking if I could play something at the wedding party. I said Yes and this song was on my mind. Managed to find a track with everything except the lead vocal. Brought a MM LIII, a Diezel Herbert and a 212 cab. Played the melody until the key change. Threw on the boost, took an overtone and made it sing. It lasted as long as I needed. Crowd was full of Hillsong musicians. They asked “HOW did you do THAT long note, dude?!” and I smiled and said I’m not so fast so I had to do something. Thing was that this was the favorite song of the bride and she had tried to get someone to sing it. I had no clue. I just turned up and played it. These interviews are better than 10 million dollars in cash. God bless you, Mason.
His playing was a good match to how David Foster, Babyface and others made music in the 90s. Didn´t he play electric guitar on ”Un-Break My Heart” by Toni Braxton from the same year as well? Quite convinced that he did. A track that I like personally is ”If I´m Not in Love” from the ”Flowers” album by Jody Watley.. Extremely sensible and tasteful player.
Two session guitarist that I really like: Michael Thompson and Steve Lukather. Thank you for making sure that those guitar parts were fit to those music.❤
The great Michael Thompson Amazing tone And session player, remember seeing his name on a lot of credits. Excited for this interview and diving into his collaboration with artists and songwriters
Man I really love your interviews not only are you great at it while still showing your a fan (which is hard to do) but you pull from a wide spectrum of American popular music especially the rnb and hip hop worlds which is the music I grew up with. Even though I’ve been a musician all my life I didn’t start guitar in a serious way until recently when some injuries and health conditions forced me away from my main instruments, these interviews came up in my life after that and I hear were the influences for my guitar playing came from that I had no idea were there until recently
So many great interviews with legendary session players. It would be incredible if you got Steve Lukather, Michael Landau and Steve Stevens to sit down for these session career breakdowns too.
Aw man, I remember seeing Michael Thompson’s name all over liner notes. Big fan, even though he was just a “name”. Til now. Thank you! And thank you, Michael Thompson!
What's crazy is I had no idea the guitarist would do so much of the creative process on the sound of the guitar, particularly with effects. I thought the engineers and producers would do all that
One of those unsung guitar heroes that played on a ton of popular albums back in the 80’s and 90’s. I especially luv his guitar work on Animal Logic’s 2 albums back in the early 90’s. Melodic and beautiful playing on every track. Also, if any of you guys haven’t heard of that band, you should check them out. They were a side project that Stewart Copeland did with Jazz bassist Stanley Clarke and singer Deborah Holland. And there were lots of catchy Pop songs with a little Jazz and Country thrown in as well.
I first heard is playing on the song "It Gets Better With Time" by The Whispers. The melodic solo made me go and find out about who was playing that great solo
The question I have is does he make these licks up in the studio on the spot or is it written down and he has to play to what is written. I am guessing he makes it up.

Thanks for watching Tim! Stay tuned for the full interview coming at the end of this week! Hope we can have you on one day🤞

Incredible balance of efficiency and taste. What a great player.
Yes!!!!!!!!!! MT is my favorite guitar player. We don’t get to see a lot from him so every time I see something I click instantly
That´s the reason, why I listen to Celine Dion songs!!!
Michael Thompson was really good for that particular sound...
His precision is amazing!
Thanks Mason for another amazing video with the legend MT!

I think he showed that Braxton track to Mason as well. Might see the clip released soon.

That's quite an interesting pickup configuration on that strat, and those tones are absolutely jaw dropping what a player.

Thompson is BY FAR the most inventive, 80's sounding, and inspirational player from this studio period. The coolest tones for sure!!
After so many years to play it again like that it is amazing. Great sound and feel

Thanks for this genius clear sound and musical emotions. Outstanding 80s feelings. Best from Germany 🇩🇪
Great guitar playing, it also makes you realise just how amazing Celine's vocal is. Sensational composition,
Just n incredible musician, I have always liked Michael Thompson. Amazing he didn't know it was used on that soundtrack.
Just love this. Thanks again Mason. Michael is a master. Man the control. Those ebow parts. His immaculate tone. What an inspiration. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

So underrated
I'm in shock by this beauty!😱🤩
Aw man, I remember seeing Michael Thompson’s name all over liner notes. Big fan, even though he was just a “name”. Til now. Thank you! And thank you, Michael Thompson!
Even on Babyface’s Unplugged album, I was amazed how MT was painting the canvas for Clapton to play over on Change the World.
Awesome melodic flavorful guitar chord phasing, that's keeps its audience continually listening
So, So Beautiful!!! If your skin doesn't crawl listening to that, somethings wrong!! Michael is THAT guy!!
This series is awesome, thanks Mason
I always thought the parts during the verses were played with a synth and it's mostly keyboard-based. Amazing what you could achieve with a guitar.
Absolutely gorgeous ❤
What's crazy is I had no idea the guitarist would do so much of the creative process on the sound of the guitar, particularly with effects. I thought the engineers and producers would do all that
Wow, what a beautiful parts!
the Best!!
Celine slays on vocals and that is what makes me love this song but now seeing the guitar parts pan out in the mix really brings the emotion for me.

Great interview. Mason it would be cool to hear how they approach eq on these guitar tones.
So freakin beautiful!
I first heard is playing on the song "It Gets Better With Time" by The Whispers. The melodic solo made me go and find out about who was playing that great solo
Michael number one
That is some tasty nuanced playing.
I would love hear him play I Turn to You !!
🔥!
AWESOME
brilliant
very nice
That’s epic song, tone and playing. I love the reverse headstock strat. I wonder if it’s a Hendrix? Or some custom shop? Great job!
genial - merciiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Nice!
Did you guys talk about the purple Strat? that is a very interesting pickup configuration!!
🤩
👍🤘👍🤘👍🤘👍
The question I have is does he make these licks up in the studio on the spot or is it written down and he has to play to what is written. I am guessing he makes it up.
🥰
What effects were used? thanks 6:08
Killer! Like Landau!
What is he playing on the second guitar part at the 5:03 ? A magnet?
I really want to hear the instrumental song that he played, called ‘ Penawar ’
5:36 What instrument was he using over the strings to generate the pad like sound?
It's called an ebow
4:28 if you need to hear the playing
Why does Michael clip his capo the other way around? I don’t suppose it’s to match the reverse headstock…
Cakep bat ni org mainnya.
He squeezes that neck so hard...
DAMN🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎸👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
