I actually like the decision they made for the dub narrator. So instead of trying to they try to make the narrator as funny as possible in their own distinct way to try to match the comedy levels even if the style is different.
There is not one instance where I ever enjoyed an English dub VA, but I'm considering rewatching this entire show dubbed just to hear the narrator. I love him
It would be fine with a British voice actor. I American voices rarely match Japanese anime characters imo. UK actually has a similar culture and sense of humour to Japan. We have tv shows with very similar serious/sarcastic narators and comedy. One example of this is 'little britain'. The over the top American accents/voices in dubs just make me cringe. Americans just can't do the type of comedy that and UK and Japan do. The American remake of in-betweeners is a good example.

But as naive high school students who have secret crushes, it can seem like the most serious thing in the world. It's so cool that they've added a different spin to the narrator and the overall show, whilst keeping the same energy the original had. Very few dubs manage to pull this off.
@@unstableturtleduck it does haha but it was a good call imo, the original style of hyper-serious narrator is absolutely hysterical in the sub but might not have worked very well in the context of English

4:11 lmao WTF; this is like the perfect example of how the kaguya-sama dub changes the actual japanese subtitles into something totally outlandish yet manages to make it friggin hilarious
Alexis even nailed the act with the tsundere. Skyward Sword Zelda was a sassy tsundere who called Link a sleepyhead, so she could be a good choice ta be her voice in Skyward Sword.
She voiced a really well known waifu, Kurumi Tokisaki. Back when Love is War was only season 1, I imagined if it got dubbed, Kaguya would be voiced by Kurumi's voice actress. And it came true😂😂😅✌️😅
Everyone's talking about how Ian sounds like he's on all the drugs, but no one's talking about how well he nails the emotional moments too. He does so goddamn good with the emotional bits
In Love is War, it is widely known that the narrator is his own character one with a smooth, silky voice that can perfectly describe and enlighten the viewer without taking away from the main characters but still retains his own power. Knowing this the dub animator continued to snort all the crack and became the main character
I just finished the dub in two days, should I check out the sub? I am mostly a dub guy because I am new to anime, but I heard that the sub narrator takes it way more seriously.
@@kycool8684 I personally prefer subs because dubs tend to modify the original writing a little bit. The sub does take it a lot more seriously though, and I personally think some of the Japanese VA's, such as Kaguya's, are better than their English counterparts.
@@kycool8684 Most animes are much better in sub. The voices match the writing and emotion much better, unfortunately English just tends to sound off because it’s such a different language.
@@Mojave_Ranger_NCR hey man you can watch subs all you want. I prefer dubs, I would rather focus on the animation over reading the words as I have a hard time focusing on both. I also don’t need the subs to line up exactly with the emotions as I have Autism and hearing emotion from English is hard enough haha. Thanks for the tip though!
I swear the English dub narrator fell right out of the dubbed Ghost Stories riff and couldn't be bothered to find a way back, and now he's terrorizing this anime to kill time. It's honestly amazing and I want more of it.
While I tend to like subs more I feel like this dub has something new, as in they realized they couldn’t replicate the Japanese version, so they went for a different sort of tone with the show and honestly I really like it
"She's a bit of a firecracker, am I right? "Children call that "tsundere", sir" "Oh, Kaguya! You big tsundere, you!" "Because Kei Shirogane is a MOTHER-FLIPPING TSUNDERE!"
Now THESE are creative liberties that you have to respect. It perfectly preserves the core idea behind the show whilst making sure that if they can't perfectly replicate a joke, they can alter it into a way that'll still land.

It's so cool that they've added a different spin to the narrator and the overall show, whilst keeping the same energy the original had. Very few dubs manage to pull this off.
To be fair not many have tried
I feel like this has VERY different energy
@@unstableturtleduck it does haha but it was a good call imo, the original style of hyper-serious narrator is absolutely
hysterical in the sub but might not have worked very well in the context of English
It ads rewatchability to the show at least.
2:57 Okay, this has to be one of my favorite dub moments. They literally made a SpongeBob reference which is hilarious.

@@mookiestewart3776 so cool, and I thought the Spanish dub was good
@@santiagoruiz1790 No. It's not, and believe me it surprised me too, but if you think that's a reference that you don't see every day in anime, you should have seen Miko's private conversation with Kobachi when Miko ponders on quitting the council, and for those who have read comic strips, or seen holiday specials, they should know what I'm talking about.

Man I honestly love the english Kaguya voice lol!

I need to do the same as well. The guy deserves an award.
The defensive delivery of "It's normal, comparatively average and wholesome!" feels like one of the most universally resonant lines in the show

The fact they changed a lot of the script from the sub is the dumest thing ever. And I fucking love it
In Love is War, it is widely known that the narrator is his own character one with a smooth, silky voice that can perfectly describe and enlighten the viewer without taking away from the main characters but still retains his own power. Knowing this the dub animator continued to snort all the crack and became the main character
And we live for it.

This guy is a genius
Despite just binge watching the entire anime in Japanese over the past two days, this video has convinced me to do it all again in English.

“Because Ken Shirogane is a muthaflippin tsundere” I’m crying 😂😭
While I tend to like subs more I feel like this dub has something new, as in they realized they couldn’t replicate the Japanese version, so they went for a different sort of tone with the show and honestly I really like it

I can't flipping believe he said that

Now THESE are creative liberties that you have to respect.
It perfectly preserves the core idea behind the show whilst making sure that if they can't perfectly replicate a joke, they can alter it into a way that'll still land.
