When people talk about R9 being the best ever, they are (most often) referring to the period from age 17-23 before his major injury during his second year at Inter Milan in the 98-99 season.
What he showed the world in that 5 or 6 year stretch, nobody has equaled it.
The seasons he spent at PSV, Barcelona, and the first year and a half at Inter Milan were mind boggling.
Don't compare R9's career statistics to other players.
No R9 fans are saying he had the best career.
What they are saying is that R9's peak was higher than anyone else's. His speed, power, skill, movement off the ball, football IQ - nobody else captured the imagination and made football beautiful in the same was as he did, not even Messi, and certainly not CR7.

People are also forgetting that Messi was raised by Barca from the age of 13, where his training, diet, medical and psychological care were perfectly planned, while Ronaldo and most Brazilians were malnourished ghetto kids with all sorts of untreated health problems.
Messi probably would never have achieved much with his poor health if he had not been rescued by a rich European club.

Ronaldinho changed his name to "little Ronaldo" in respect for Ronaldo.
Zamorano gave up his #9 shirt and took 1+8 in respect for Ronaldo.
So loved by the commentators they called him Ronnie.
On Playstation FIFA 98 he was called Calcio (Football).
Most people refer to him as Fenomeno or R9 and some Original Ronaldo.
CRAZY that he already had ALL of this prestigious glory but even More CRAZY.
He was only 22 years old.
At 17, Messi started his first match in La Liga, Ronaldo already a World Cup Champion.
At 19, Mbbappe begin to rise up in Champion League. Ronaldo already named FIFA World Player of The Year.
At 21, C. Ronaldo still grieved over World Cup defeat. Ronaldo already held high the Ballon d'Or.
Ronaldo switching 4 clubs, in 4 different leagues, in every year. And when he arrived, he dominated that league. The last league he played before the injuries, the Italian Series A, he's made Captain at such a young age. Ronaldo O Truly Fenomeno.

If you compare stats by age 23 years old, Ronaldo Nazario was on a different level completely. His prime was between age 18 and 23 due to a devastating injury. Playing in the golden era of defenders, and then dominating in Series A, which was absolutely brutal defensively in the late 90s. His peak was insane to comprehend, hence the Phenomenon. Legend.

I'm Brazilian and most people here say that Ronaldo was better than Romário. About the injuries, it's true. Messi at 20 wasn't the best player in the world. Ronaldo at that age already was. Even with the injuries, he scored 8 goals in a single World Cup, something that Messi never managed even at his peak. The inflated numbers are because of La Liga, which is very weak compared to Barcelona and Real Madrid.

  • @colinparris
    @colinparris 2 місяці тому +4

Just a word of advice. Don't boil down comparisons between players of different generations to stats and numbers. Sure, numbers have relevance but it's tricky to compare different eras because of changes in the prevailing tactics of specific times. Eg, the late 1980s/early 1990s were very defensive (I know that R9 came a bit after this period). Looking at their impact in their time is a more accurate indicator, albeit a more subjective one.

    late comment...
Ronaldo is the greatest striker football has ever known, the ball was a tumor on his foot, his dribbling skills were perfection, and that was at his insane top speed (the videos on him don't show just how fast he's really going, he's so fast, while maintaining total control with the ball, nightmare for defenders), acceleration (he could go from like 0 to "200" mph in an instant, nightmare for defenders), deceleration (he could from "200" to 0 mph in an instant, nightmare for defenders), and agility/velocity/cutting (almost every defender, he put them on their a$$es and/or nut-mugged them, and he always had at least 4-5 guys on him at all times too), the ball was always touching his feet, no one ever took the ball away from him, they made a special rule, that if you got the ball from Ronaldo, you instantly won not just the game, but the entire league/championship too (just joking, but it should've been made real, lol), not only was he fast and agile, but he was really strong too, and also his shooting skills were top tier too, a total sniper, able to score goals from near the half-line even. He's even dribbled the ball down the entire field, beating their entire team, to then juke the goalie and walk the ball into the net, even when he came back after his knee injuries and extremely overweight (from his medical issue, whatever it's called) in the 2002 world cup, where he could only "walk", that didn't matter, as no one could take the ball from him even when he's walking, and he'd just "walk" past most of the opposing team, and still score on them. Also, he played in an era that had some of the best and most aggressive defenders too, yet he still dominated them completely, putting them on their a$$es and/or nut-mugging them, he just could not be stopped at all. The only way to stop him, was to take out his knees... and that's exactly what happened... that's how he had his "knee injuries"... his record speaks for itself, having a near "100%" scoring record (nearly a 1 goal per game record for his professional career), until his last years due to his medical issue (including the weight gain from it) and his bad knees, where it finally starts to drop off... ultimately down to a "50%" scoring record: 1 goal for every 2 games, if I remember right... when he then finally retires
every great footballer says ronaldo was the best striker of all time, especially the ones who went up against him, especially as a defender (and goal keeper), no one was more feared than Ronaldo... you just knew that every time Ronaldo got the ball, he got a goal, because he did get a goal nearly every time he got the ball, it was just something the opposing team had to take in account in their strategy at trying to win the game, lol
the videos you find on him, don't do him justice, you don't see the speed he had, and there's a lot of amazing stuff he did that just can't find videos on anymore, sadly
lastly, other footballers might be able to do really cool fancy tricks and stuff, but Ronaldo used his dribbling skills, not to show off and entertain, but to score goals. He did what was needed to score, and he did it better than anyone, his dribbling skills were for the sole purpose of scoring, so they weren't the most fancy, but they ruthlessly got the job done, the job of scoring goals, and the best defenders couldn't do a thing about it at all

Messi is not better than R9 just because he scored 91 goals in a calendar year, that's so narrow-minded. For example, I bet in most of those goals he used only his left foot to dribble, whereas R9 knew how to use both his feet, making him more enjoyable to watch. Besides, have you looked up how much R9 was scoring at PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona? He was averaging almost a goal per match, the first one to do so. When he was playing for Inter, at one time, he had 31 goals in 44 matches which was amazing, considering how focused on not receiving any goals the italian league was and still is. I like Messi too, but he's not at prime R9's level, skill wise. And comparing to Romario, R9 played more beautifully than him, in my opinion.

Im an r9 freak fan MESSI is the goat though. I taped on vhs back in the day every match R9 played for Brazil in 98 world cup 2002 world cup 2006 world cup, real madrid 2003-2006 and loads more, i was obsessed with him because in 1996 my parents finally got sky sports. That season as a 19/20 year old we couldnt believe he was human 47 goals in 49 games at 19 insane, and the only person to equal that was Messi though he did it for 100 seasons. Messi is the GOAT. Messi aint a human being. R9 missd near 3 full seasons because of an ACL injury and was rushed back, after around 6 minutes of coming on, his knee gave way again, his patellor tendon 'exploded into his thigh'. He came into 2002 world cup having not played much. yet he scored 8 goals and was evidently not the mad insane r9 of psv, barca inter. He collapsed on the day of the world cup final in 1998. He shouldnt have started the game but its also understandable considering he begged to start. How you deal with that i cannot ever know. All his life dreaming of being a world cup winner, then on that feckin day of ALL days you have a fit. Then the mad injuries between then and the 2002 world cup made people think he wouldnt be good. But he scored 8 goals, subbed off every game around 70min to make sure he would destroy the opposition in the next round. genius.

What this video fails to show is the impact Ronaldo had on the game. Maybe the numbers weren't the all time best, maybe he didn't win as many trophies, but when he played and was in prime (remember - he came back and played after blowing out his knees in an era where a torn ACL was a career death sentence), he was the most feared player on the field. At every level. Prime Ronaldo was the fastest player with among the most skill and power whenever he stepped on the pitch. He was unstoppable and teams would sacrifice entire portions of the field in an attempt to contain him.
While there are players I would objectively rate higher than him all time (i.e. Messi, CR7, etc) - I can't think of ANYONE who was as dangerous on the field at any time in football history. If I were "drafting" a team of players all time and I had the #1 pick - I'd pick R9 over anyone else.

What our generation from the late 1980s and 1990s (JEW, GENTILE, BLACK, WHITE, RED, OR YELLOW) witnessed with Ronaldo Nazario. We are convinced that he is the GOAT.
He had EVERYTHING - SPEED, POWER, AWARENESS, DRIBBLING SKILLS WITH BOTH FEET (Not just with his left foot - but with Both feet!), TECHNIQUE, FINISHING SKILLS, STRENGTH - ONLY PELE could match him...and I think he WOULD have become better than Pele!!
If Ronaldo Nazario HAD NOT received those lengthy injuries. The world would need no more proof that he is/was the GOAT.
In the the late 1980s and 1990s Mike Tyson was the number one Sportsman in the world.

I'm afraid you certainly don't know what you're talking about. Saying Ronaldo isn't near Messi, it's just ignorance with a whiff of arrogance cos if you were humble you'd learn from people who know and they'll tell you. So be humble and learn.

The youngest player ever to win ballon'D ,no one said his career was the best. But the best striker ever to player football, the best talent ever . Most great player said it , One if the greatest coach jose mourinho said it. So your opinion doesn't count. Its the end. Maybe you are too young to understand best talent and best career are very different.

It's his opinion so it's still count, not for everything about Ronaldo but it still count, simply because he didn't know any better cuz he didn't witness R9 in his times and what he did, the impact he brought, the changes he made to the game.
