This is such a bad take. Why are we comparing PG, or anyone, to the exception rather than the rule? OMG, he didn't make a sacrifice that almost no one ever makes... Shocking!
Where were all of you people when Tobias Harris was actually playing like a mid-level exception player on a max contract for the Sixers? Where was everyone saying that he should have refused the contract, because he knew he was never a max worthy player a day in his life before he signed it? Nowhere! But, now, you've got a lot to say about what PG is worth before he plays a minute on his new contract.

Really a 500k pay cut. Yes he could have signed a 5-year, $269 million deal, but instead with a 3-year, $117 million deal, with an opt-out clause in the fourth year, he’ll have 10 years of experience and can potentially sign a 5-year, $439 million deal. This means he’ll earn $556.56 million over 8 years, compared to the $557 million he would have made with the original 5-year deal extended to 8 years for comparison.
He’s taking a significant risk because if he gets injured, he might not be able to sign the next lucrative deal. Additionally, he’s losing some money due to interest and inflation. So, in reality, he's probably giving up around $1-2 million. However, the way his contract is structured gives the Knicks a lot of flexibility right now. Definitely a selfless move. Love this guy

i think this is a poor take. This is good for the league. Even if super teams get formed that’s what all casual fans and some diehard fans secretly want. There is a reason viewership is higher when dynasties are playing. The main complaint this year was this year’s finals had no aura. Parity is good, but the fans don’t want parity. They want all time teams they can root for or against

💯 We also want to see players stay with teams and build those super teams. There's just something about cheering for or against the same guys for a decade that is special. Any Knicks fan will recall a few terrifying moments from the season (not to mention all the injuries that actually happened). Taking a pretty huge amount of money now is a completely reasonable call on his part, even if waiting a year might theoretically land him a better deal. @@abiehersh7392 He signed for 156.5 Mio 4 year extension... couldve demanded a 213 mio 4 year extension RIGHT NOW! You think the Knicks wouldve risked to see him leave as a FA next summer? They wouldve given him that 4 year extension, had he demanded it.
So its not only about the additional year he could get next summer. Its the annual money he left on the table right now! 12-17 Mio per year over the lenth of the new contract. Thats what is actually helping the Knicks to stay competitive and under the 2nd apron if Bridges and Randle need new contracts over the next view seasons.
Injury risk and security for the future have nothing to do with the discount he gave the Knicks right now. He took less so his teammates can get theirs and stay on the team!

As a Golden State Warrior fan, and someone impacted by a CBA that CJ McCollum concocted because of his PTSD with the Dubs, I approve of this move and was actually waiting for the first domino to drop - its a huge finger to Silver and I hope the Knicks succeed.
I do agree the league wont stand for it and will course correct, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it.
With the league so hamstrung by the 2nd apron, this is an opportunity for a not just a group of 3 max guys, but a roster of 15 players to all be on the same page and win via depth.
Make sense that Brunson would be the first to do something like this considering his dad was a player so Jalen has been comfortable financially for as long as he can remember, and his dad is on the staff.
I applaud Brunson for putting winning and friendship above all else. Would be an epic way to win a title.

The idea that they're somehow being "stupid" by leaving money on the table has always annoyed me. Past a certain point, more money doesn't make you happier. It's been proven in study after study. Brunson has already secured generational wealth. He'll have a chance to add to that on his next contract. Giving up this $100 million isn't going to have a single negative impact on his life, but it might very well have a positive one if the Knicks win a title.

I think you’re missing something important here… He didn’t REALLY take a pay cut, he makes more money in the long run with a 3 year extension now and re-signing in 2027 than he would extending next offseason, because if he extended next offseason for 5 years and wasn’t up for an extension again until 2030 presumably he wouldn’t be in his prime anymore at that point and couldn’t get a big money deal.
So instead of getting one max 5 year contract he’s opting for a near-max 3 year contract and then an even bigger max 5 year contract. Yeah it does help the Knicks with cap flexibility in the short term, but Brunson will also make more this way himself. It’s a win win.

I agree with you, Brunson is in a position which is completely unique to all the other stars in the league and New Yorks cap space is in such a place where it makes a lot of sense why he would take the pay cut, they surrounded him with his college buddies he’s absolutely adored by the fan base and New York is such a large market that it’s possible he could make up that money later down the line with endorsements or a new deal a year earlier than if he waited. I don’t think we will see other players take pay cuts that large just due to how unique Brunson’s situation is.

Reminds me of what the boogie to golden state move could have been had he stayed healthy. Highly doubt this becomes a trend for stars or role players but imo it’s good to finally see someone who actually puts actions behind the championship talk.

  • @shorewall
    @shorewall Місяць тому

I understand your point, but I disagree. Taking less money works against the player's interest. Winning championships works in the player's interest. Deciding to take a pay cut in order to win, with nothing guaranteed, when contracts ARE guaranteed, is never going to ruin the league. It will never be widespread enough to tip the competitive balance that way.
Even if it did, even if 4 teams had super duper teams, and everyone else was no good, it would be like the 80s, when the Lakers and Celtics were going for the chip every year. I don't even think it would be a problem, and it definitely wouldn't last.
Look at Harden taking less with Philly, and then getting frustrated and forcing a trade. Nothing is guaranteed, except guaranteed contracts. So a player like Brunson taking less to give his team more options is admirable, and I hope he gets rewarded with a chip for his efforts.
