My boat somehow survived in there, just around the corner to the back, my friend put her there for me. So much loss, devastation. My prayers are with the people of Grenada and Carriacou, does anyone know if Carl the skipper is okay on Carriacou? We sailed for snorkling together long time ago
It's sad, that they could not and cannot afford hurricane-resistant construction standards because of the economic conditions on these islands. I went through a cat 4 (2mph short of cat 5) hurricane, in Cape Coral (Ian) my vegetation was devastated, lost about 25% of my shingles of the roof but that was the only damage to my house. Of course, it is built to hurricane-resistant standards. In these islands they cannot enforce such standards as they are too costly, so the people could not get housing/shelter at all, or for very-very long time, which is unacceptable. So flimsily built houses will go up again - unfortunately - but there is no other choice.
This is true. I would like a bomb proof house however I can’t afford this. I still need a house. Even the suggestions of concrete - while may be stating the obvious concrete would have to be shipped there - concrete is insanely expensive to ship. People can’t afford this.
The roads seems to be made out of concrete and is mostly in good condition. Looks like most of the folks left the island and took their vehicles with them. I can only see electricity being restored using international help. There are some roofs that remain untouched. This tells me that the problem is with building codes and the folks adhering to these codes.
Only DOME shape structures might work in Grenada, just saying given the land mass and geographic location to future storms and hurricanes. Only can enforce better building codes going forward. It wouldn't make sense to go and rebuild using the same methods only to go through another hurricane.
Yes. This is terrible. Many older places in FL like this too. The building codes have to be brought up. I often say the same- dome and round houses cut windshear by 33%. Many of the homes there didn’t even have plywood under the tin roof. The whole island needs rebuilding w/new underground electrical as well. I’ve been through a Cat 5. It’s something you will never forget. All buildings should be block with roofs to code. Lord help these people. 🙏🙏🙏
