  • Info from Army Corp of Engineers website: Kentucky and Barkley Locks work as a system for passing barge traffic even though they are located on different rivers. Kentucky Lock and Dam is located on the Tennessee River 22.4 miles upstream of the junction with the Ohio River. Barkley Lock and Dam is located on the Cumberland River 30.6 miles upstream of the Ohio. The two rivers are connected by the Barkley Canal, which intersects the Tennessee River at mile 25.3 and the Cumberland River at mile 32.8. Kentucky's lock chamber is 110' x 600' and has been in operation since 1944.

I've been there many times (my mother grew up in Grand Rivers, her Dad was Capt. Johnson Marler, who worked for Crounse). Thanks for the memories.

Always wondered how these barges passed through the TN River system. I kind of figured they had these lock chambers that gradually put the barges at the downstream level. Thanks for this video!

Thanks for sharing this vid, for even though I've lived in the area for years (and shot photos at the new rec area on the east bank below the dam and new bridges), I've never been around to watch them lock through. After seeing a couple locking through at Cheatham Dam earlier this year from a distance, this was a welcome vid to see.

Was this shot before they closed 641 and essentially the dam and lock to visitors?? We drove down there back in 2011 on our way over to Crossville, TN and stopped there. Did n't look like you could access the dam. I remember when I was a kid I had an aunt and uncle that lived close to Kentucky Lake and we went over and visited the dam...cool place!!

Does anyone know what the actual elapsed time it takes from entering the lock until the tow is 'completely' thru a lock? (I've read where lock delays for large tows - i.e. Necessitating a double cycle of the process, one half at a time - can be upwards of over three hours.???

Oc Tester it can take a few hours some times...just depends on how big our tows are

How do the barges move without the tug????

Good question! They are pulled through with a mechanical mule. At :43 you will see it sliding on rails on the right side toward the entry to connect to the barges.

Can recreational boats like 25 feet go thru the locks? At what cost?

At 1 point for Lock 1 in Minneapolis, I saw kayaks, jet skis, canoes, and various sized boats with motors. There was no fee at the lock itself. The payment was indirect by way of additional taxes on gasoline and diesel bought at stations on the river. Everyone who bought gas at a river based station paid the higher tax, regardless of passing through locks or not

We typically run 15 at a time. Take 9 through, and then 6 and the boat. It's around a 4 hour process.

If you can fully fit in a lock without breaking apart. It’s about a 45 minute process. From talking the pilot into the chamber to turning him loose.
