- I bring you my shot at Bhutsu Mutandarika. Both as a horn player and guitar player in Thomas Mapfumo’s band, this was one of my most favorite songs to play. It’s definitely from the ‘Chikende’ genre of Zimbabwean traditional music... but the ‘backbeat’ gives it an interesting ‘modern’ twist. Bhutsu Mutandarika, as Thomas Mapfumo would translate it, means “daddy’s long shoe”. There’s a few inferences one could make from that: maybe dad was a traveler and this signified his ‘always on the move’ nature... or when the kids saw dad’s big shoes by the door, they knew dad was back home. Hey... take your pick. 🤣🤣
The lyrics also go into “Guva rangu kana ndazofa” which is a classic lyric sung over Chikende songs and also heard a lot over the Jerusalema/Mbende beat.
Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Zimbabwe, Chikende, Mbira, Marimba, Nyunga Nyunga, Andy Brown, Chiwoniso, James Chimombe, Chimurenga, Gandanga, Mukanya, John Chibadura, Harare, Southern Africa, Ngoma, Jerusarema, Mbende

Bass harina kumira mushe iro! Do you know who was on bass on the original? You totally aced it.
Thanks so much. I have no idea who was on bass for the original. I don’t even remember if it sounded quite like this... but we redid the song with Mukanya in the early 2000s and Chris Muchabaiwa was on bass.
