Prince Edward is the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II, and was third in line to the throne at the time of his birth. Born in 1964 at Buckingham Palace, he was christened at a private ceremony at Windsor Castle.
He attended schools in London and Berkshire before moving to Gordonstoun School in Scotland. He then attended Jesus College Cambridge, this caused controversy at the time as his A level results, D grades in history and politics and a C grade in English, were well below the usual entry standards.
Prince Edward obtained sponsorship for his time at university from the Royal Marines, who paid for his tuition in exchange for his service after university. But he dropped out of the gruelling commando training course part-way through, and left the Marines. This was probably a difficult moment for his father Prince Philip, who was the Captain General of the Royal Marines at the time.
Always passionate about theatre, Prince Edward then pursued a career in entertainment. Starting as a production assistant with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production company in 1988, he went on to found his own production company in 1993.
Prince Edward announced his engagement to Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999. The two had been close to each other since 1993. They got married at the chapel in Windsor Castle, rather than at Westminster Abbey, in contrast to his older siblings.
Prince Edward stepped away from his career in TV production in 2002, following a 2001 row where he was accused of ‘cashing in’ on his royal status after his production company broke royal privacy agreements by attempting to film his nephew Prince William while he was at university.
Prince Edward would start to perform royal duties full time from this point onwards. Prince Edward and Sophie, then the Countess of Wessex, would go on to have two children. Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and James Mountbatten-Windsor.
Prince Edward would eventually become the new Duke of Edinburgh, a title previously held by his father Prince Philip, and Sophie would become the Duchess of Edinburgh. They remain two of the most prominent and publicly visible members of the Royal Family. Prince Edward has also taken over his father’s role in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, which encourages and supports young people to take part in volunteering, and outdoor expeditions.

The Duke of Edinburgh has always sought his own path, instead of waiting around for direction.
He has always had independant resolve to be who he is.
Now, as Duke of Edinburgh, he has the quiet confidence to continue the work and duties of his father, Prince Philip. He and Duchess Sophie are a wonderful couple and truly best friends. We need to hear more about them. 💖👑💖

I still think the Queen was proudest of him because he didn't have those scandals like his siblings and he has a humble and quiet family life. Doesn't matter if he didn't follow the tradition of being in the military. He is his own man and into the arts. He is good man.
As with so many families, Edward and his siblings have quite different strengths, weaknesses, and gifts to offer the nation.

He tried to conform to them mold but just couldn't do it and carved his own path thru the Royal Family

My birthday is a couple of days after his, same year. So I practically “grew up” with him. I had such a crush on him, I think now I can admit it 🤣🤣The walls in my room were covered with his pictures. He is such a charming person, I am still in love…just kidding. His wife is adorable as well and so are his children ❤

You really did a disservice to Edward with this video. Not everyone is cut out for the military, look at Harry. He failed it. Edward had enough sense to realise it early and do something about it. He certainly didn't get anyone killed by his incompetence like the ex-spare did.

Wonderful that Prince Edward is now Duke of Edinburgh. The family move on and are now on holiday at Balmoral in the Annual Royal Family Holiday. Harry will not join them this year.

No money or property goes with that title. That goes for most of the other Royal Dukedoms too. The only two Royal Dukedoms that provide an income is the Duchy of Cornwall, which now supports William, and the Duchy of Lancaster which now supports Charles. Those two were set up in the 1300s to provide an income to the monarch and the heir apparent.

So glad he managed to get into Cambridge with such poor a levels. It would have been awful if an intelligent peasant had gone instead.
They had a wonderful wedding, but the boy was certainly a DISAPPOINTMENT to Prince Philip and the Queen!! Then pulling the stunt filming Prince William when he was off limits proves what a fool Edward is! When he refused to shake hands with his adoring public makes me wonder IF he's a man at all!

Are you referring to his leaving the military? Because Prince Philip made a point of publically stating how much he loved and supported his youngest son. That the military was not for every man and he was proud that his son had the courage to choose a different path.
