  • Found this beaut at the Sunday markets for $15. Made a pretty good pork pattie. If you see one of these, I recommend you buy it!
    Info on Spong that I found: www.gracesguide.co.uk/Spong_a...
    The lovely and lucky Carol Taylor who commented below also happens to own a Spong National #25, which she did a writeup about at carolcooks2.com/2022/01/07/ca....

    Can't find the blades for my kitchenaid grinder and forgot I had one of these.
    You made me confident I can use it to break down a pork shoulder. Thanks man.

    I feel like a idiot! I purchased a #25 spong off of Ebay, and i couldnt figure out why, my chuck roast pieces, that I had cut into 1/2" pieces, weren't coming out of the holes. It was clogging the machine, and I was convinced that the cutting blade was missing. Until I watched you're video, and realized, that the one die, with the end piece sticking out, is the cutting blade. I had only installed the 1 die used for ground beef, not knowing that it requires both. In my defense I had never seen or used one of these machines before.Tomorrow I will grind, with renewed confidence and insight.😊 Thank You.....

      Don't feel like an idiot; I did the same thing and mine jammed and I can't unscrew the end now! It's waiting in the fridge for my husband to fix! :-D Sadly I had to use the electric blender to finish the job!

    Awesome, thanks! I picked mine up a while ago, nice little freebie from an old couple decluttering. I was mainly rapt that it was in its original box, more than interested in the actual mincer, lol. I’ve been dying to know how to use it. Gonna start mincing now😁

    My mom's grinder (mincer) came with a wooden "pusher" to hold the meat down: The "pusher" was a 2" or 3" diameter, wooden dowel & the bottom was concave.... so it (sort of) conformed to that big screw inside the gadget. She would load the top with meat & press down with the pusher while turning the handle, quite fast but her fingers were never in any danger. (I guess this model never came with wooden pusher?)

    • @platima
      @platima  Рік тому

      Oooh interesting and yeah probably a good idea to make one - safer than fingers haha. Thanks for that

    • @AcornHillHomestead
      @AcornHillHomestead 11 місяців тому +1

      The pushers can be thrifted or found oretty cheap and flea markets and antique stores. They are usually made of very hard wood which is better for cleaning.

    Picked up a compact one at the flea market, made killer crushed seeds with pumpkin and sunflower (mix crushed stuff with honey or maple syrup for baklava topping) and big grain minced beef with it and a french roast, really great tasting and it really beats store bought minces, it only came with 3 grates of different hole sizes but they were pretty good at slicing since they all spin and the small pressure force of the corkscrew actions (theres one in the overall hull and one in the crank) just does the entire job without even a rotating blade so to my understanding that action works as an universal one (till I find an oval sided rectangle turning axis nut out there, seems pretty hard), cost me 10$ but I did fucking maim myself on its clamp screw earlier (a shaving was sticking out the clamp screw under the tiny metal cup that it clamps under a table or counter, I inspected the fuckin thing 3 times and had already used it 5 times, it did a 2-3 mm cut in the palm of my hand 1 cm long, bled for 10 minutes, enough to make me feel lightheaded for a bit.
    Overall better than an electric pylon for quite a few things, the grain it gives on any of its grinding action is cool, watch out for sharp bits using it handheld for crushing something tho you might maim your hand lmao.

      @platima  Рік тому

    I have a problem with mine. when I try to mince the nut that holds the plates in position tightens up and the machine jams until I loosen the nut. so I have to continually loosen this nut while turning the handle. Any ideas? When it does work it works really well,but this nut tightening is spoiling the process. I tried making a little gasket out of silicone sheet but it only survived 5 minutes.

    • @platima
      @platima  2 роки тому

      Bugger. May need to try a few things, but I'd start with a nylon gasket as that will glide instead of grip when rotating. Else you could try oiling it a bit?
