I remember when a man sleeping in his bed in the FL lakes region got sucked deep into a sinkhole. It was deemed too dangerous to retrieve his body, so he's still way deep in there.

This is precisely why I chose to buy in Brevard County. Brevard county rarely gets sinkholes. The limestone is too new for it to happen at the frequency of the rest of the state. Oh and by the way, sinkholes aren’t covered by your insurance, and you can’t get insurance for it either unless there’s never been a sinkhole near your house in a 5 mile radius. The only time insurance will cover it is if it’s considered catastrophic ground cover collapse and the city officially condemns your house. So if the sink hole takes out your pool, center of your living room, corner or your garage, etc where it’s not a structural problem that could lead to total collapse, good luck getting the city to condemn it. Then you have to pay for it out of pocket. Most homeowners in Florida have no idea that this is not covered.

They need to do serious digging to figure out how they can prevent this situation. Dig little holes and look with cameras, before you build a house.......I have cracks in my driveway, but there are no sink holes where I live. It is uphill, built around a lake, so that ground is built on the dirt from the lake ; unstable, but not a sink hole material. Big difference. Florida is sea level, so it is on shaky ground. Eventually the sea will take it , all around ........I

When the state of Florida allows giant corporations to pump out millions of gallons of water from the aquifer each day for resale, this is what happens. The only thing holding up the dirt is the water, and if the water table drops, there is nothing left to support the dirt. Why isn't a government agency monitoring the level of the Florida Aquifer to prevent situations like this?

    • @nolimitsnuttbusts4u

Realtor mentioned when looking at homes in the area that back in the day money was given from the state for homeowners to get there properties inspected for this but mentioned most of them just kept the money and never got the property inspected and by now sold and moved out of those homes. New homeowners will never know. Also don’t know if this story I was told was even true.

There's no planning for this. Virtually all of Florida sits on soft limestone, which dissolves in extremely unpredictable ways. One day, everything seems fine, but then the next day, that 40' wide cavern that's been growing under your house simply can't hold the weight of what's above...
