Great review man. Yeah I agree this film is very disappointing. There are some really good ideas in it but overall I just found it to be very dull and boring. I just couldn’t get into it. I thought Beneath was disappointing but at least that was a bit more fast paced and tried to do something different. I definitely don’t hate it though. I think the cast try their best here. I think Roddy McDowell is really good as Caesar. I love that final speech that he gives at the end. It’s nice to have Ricardo Moltaban return as Armando but he’s absolutely wasted here. His death scene I thought was terrible how instead of submitting to the interrogation machine he killer himself by jumping out the window. I just thought it was so rushed and badly done. Unlike Zira and Cornelius death in the previous movie, this one packed no emotional impact. I quite like the character of McDonald. I think he’s good and I like how he helps out Cesar but also questions his methods at the end. I don’t really care for Governor Breck as a villain. The actor gives a good performance but I just don’t find the character that interesting. He has the same motivation that Hasslien did in the previous movie, to enslave and kill the apes to prevent them from taking over. I just found him to be this generic dictator. There wasn’t much to his personality and I just didn’t find him engaging. Apart from Caesar, none of the other Apes stand out in this film. The final battle is decent and I think the speech at the end is very powerful but it’s not enough to save the movie. The sets and costumes are great here, I like the 1991 Earth setting and it’s interesting to see the Apes as slaves to humans now. That’s cool to see. The music is decent here but definitely the weakest of the first four soundtracks. The pacing I found really slow, a lot of this movies drags. Not a lot happens in this film until towards the end. It’s very talky and I just don’t find it that interesting. Overall not a very good film in my opinion and a huge disappointment after the third movie which I really enjoyed. I’ll give this one a 4 out of 10.
Thank you Sam 😊 yeah Conquest is a boring and mediocre entry. The third act is epic and awesome but the rest of it is completely dull. The direction and pacing is so rushed. Roddy McDowell is the only reason to watch it.
@@samharrison5058 It could have been a masterpiece if the they worked on the first 2/3 of the script a bit more, sadly a powerful 3rd act doesn't make up for the rest of the film.
@@PajaksPodcasts yeah most of the film is as dull as dishwater. It’s almost like they think they are building towards an epic battle at the end but it just doesn’t work because most of the movie is complete boring filler.
Awesome review Ollie, Conquest of The Planet of The Apes is vastly disappointing after Escape and a meh penultimate instalment to the original series. Rody McDowell is the only great performance of the film and his speech gives me goosebumps. The third act is so epic and puts the first 2 acts to shame. But to get to that you've gotta sit through painfully boring filler, Mcdonald I don't care for as a character, Almando's death isn't half has powerful as it could have been. FOX even had a R rated cut of the movie where the final battle got so extreme and intense, which they toned down the brutal moments in the final cut. I'd give Conquest of The Planet of The Apes 2 stars out of 5!
Thanks Harry :) there's no way of getting around the disappointment that is Conquest of The Planet of the Apes, but at least the 3rd act has some memorable moments. See you next time for the 5th and final film of the original Apes series that killed it stone dead, Battle For The Planet of the Apes. Thanks man :)
