We Implode A Big Barrel (But Not Without Failure - Long Version)

  • First, we fill up the huge barrel (steel drum) with boiling water. This step is crucial because it's not technically the water that's doing the work, but the steam it produces. The steam generated by the boiling water occupies the space inside the drum, pushing out the air until it's almost entirely steam-filled. Next, we seal the drum tightly. This action traps the steam within, not allowing it to escape. With the drum sealed, the high temperature inside is maintained, keeping the steam from condensing back into water.
Then we pour cold water and liquid nitrogen over the drum very quickly. The sudden drop in temperature causes the steam inside the drum to condense rapidly back into water. Since water occupies less space than steam, it leaves a vacuum inside the drum. Then the atmospheric pressure outside the drum becomes significantly greater than the pressure inside. The imbalance of pressure causes the drum to implode spectacularly! It's not an explosion, where energy is released outwards, but an implosion, where the external pressure forces the drum to collapse inward.
And there you have it - a dramatic demonstration of the power of atmospheric pressure, using nothing more than a 50-gallon drum and some basic principles of physics. Remember, don't try this at home! This experiment is conducted under controlled conditions by trained professionals. Always respect the power of science!
