    Video was so useful! I am 67 years old and retired on a fixed income. I need new screens all over my house and was not looking forward to the expense of having someone replace the tattered and torn screens. Then I found YOU!!! I just finished my first screen today! It looks wonderful!! Your directions and video are so easy to understand! Thank you so much!!! Hugs!!!!!!

    Money Saver
    You are awesome. I saved $1200 because of you. Yes, you because I rescreened 19-windows in out house. I looked at other videos, but they just chattered on. I paid $60 at my local hardware store for all the supplies--rubber spin, metal mesh, & tape. I even impressed my husband.
    Time
    I just took my time during this global pandemic and did about 2-windows per day over a 2-week period. By the 6th window, I was cranking them out. My nosy neighbor now wants me to do her windows. I sent her your video instead.
    Recycled
    I also saved money by reusing the spin. It was basically new because my cat did the screen damage to my new windows.
    Open the Window
    I had to use another video to open my windows....I didn't know how to open those 2014 windows.

    What made this video unique and valuable was the use of duct tape on the four sides before installing the screen. This prevents the frame from warping in when you're trying to put the screen in taut enough.

    This is excellent! I'm having an open house tomorrow, and was dreading the fact that I need to replace two screens first, but now I'm feeling pretty confident about it. My only suggestion would be to explain the difference between "concave and convex", I wasn't completely sure about that, and had to look it up, lol. Other than that it was awesome, really helped me, thank-you!!

    Wonderful video. Thank you! My 12-year-old put holes in his screen when he was younger and today he learned a great lesson about fixing things himself. After we watched the video we went to Home Depot to get the supplies and bumped into a couple needing to do the same thing. My son explained everything we watched in the video to them and referred them to UA-cam. Great learning experience!

    Take a piece of the old spline with you when you go to buy the new spline then match it up. When I went to the store they had 2 or 3 sizes from 1/8" to 3/16". If I remember right my spline size was the smaller 1/8" size.

    Same process with fiberglass screen. Rolling the spline in tightens the screen. If you want it a little tighter you can use slight sideways pressure on the screen after the first edge is rolled in. Careful, if you pull too much you will tear the screen when rolling the other edges in.

    That worked sweet! In addition, in order to keep the frame square, set a framing square at the edges, and then tape the frame edges to the floor, keeps a loose frame 'solid' before screening it in.

      Measure the spine with vernier calipers is the best way, but not everyone has a pair. Take a piece of spline with you to the store and match it. Ask an experienced employee if in doubt.
      BTW, in the video he uses .125 inch spline (or 125 thousandths, or even called 1/8th inch spline), not .125 thousandths like he said (which would be 1/32 the width of a human hair. Just saying.

    • @mitcholson9795
      @mitcholson9795 4 роки тому

      @vince weaver you make absolutely no sense. How can you say .125 is 1/8 of an inch and then right after say .125 is 1/32 of an inch. Which 1/32 is definitely not .125. In the video he says his spline is 125 thousands which is absolutely correct

    Thanks for detailed video. I watched at .75 speed and it was very calming. The front door screen I'm replacing has been there a long time, and so the job of getting the 40 year old hard stiff spline out required using a tool with a hook edge. The old spline broke into many pieces. Then, another chore was getting out the long narrow threads of screen from inside of the spline groove. I used q-tip swabs to clean the spline grooves out.

    You're supposed to use the convex end of the spline tool to go along the edge and push the screen down into the slot before then coming back and using the concave side to push the spline down into the slot. If you push the screen down into the slot first, then you aren't fighting to hold the screen taut while also trying to force the spline into the slot and you'll end up with a much more taut screen.

      Yeah: the video says nothing about keeping the screen taut, and the mesh aligned so it does not end up mounted crooked. It could also tell us how to install the pull tabs, as well as what to do with the mesh at the corners, where it bunches up. I followed instructions on the roll of mesh which said to make a 45-degree cut there.

    Good explanation, but I would add that the most common beginner's mistake is to try to hard to get the screen tight, and wind up getting it so tight that it warps the frame. To avoid that error, tape your frame down firmly to a surface (no-residue duct tape works fine) and roll the spline in without putting tension on the screen. Rolling in the spline gets the screen tight enough.

  • @Iscaper
    @Iscaper  11 років тому +3

    When you roll the spline in the grooves it tightens the screen. When you get one side rolled in if you use a slight pulling pressure away from the rolled in side it tightens a little more. Careful if you pull too tightly it tears the screen when you roll the other edges in.

    You could probably get plexiglass cut to size so it would install on the inside of the lip of the frame, but securing it might take a little time because you wouldn't be using the spline. You would probably need 10 smaller clips that you space out and anchor into the frame with screws that would secure the plexiglass against the frame.

    Wow! You made this look so easy! There ought to be a separate video for arthritic grandmas. It took me an hour and a half of swearing, sweating, and patching up the holes I created in the screening when the roller tool slipped out of the groove and created holes in the brand new screening! I quit after an hour and a half, and I still have to push the spline in one long side, then cut off the excess screening, screw in the handle and get it back up. I was wishing that someone had videoed me as I did it, including mixing myself a gin and tonic afterwards as a well earned reward. I did a terrible job, but it will get through the summer. Next time I'll pay someone to do it. Sigh...

      Maybe you should have had the gin and tonic first. :)

    Thank u so much for the demo. How can I remove a third floor screen from the inside? Will I need to b outside to remove?

    • @Iscaper
      @Iscaper  10 років тому

      If the tabs are on the outside of the screen you'll probably have remove the screen one time from outside. Then rotate the screen so the tabs are facing to the inside of the window and you should be able to remove it from inside the home.

    The rounded end of the tool can also be used to lightly press the screen in the track before pressing the spline in. This really helps starting a thick or aluminum screen.

    Thank you for showing how to do this when there's no one to help. I certainly can't ask my cat to hold one end when he destroyed several.

      P.D. Bhatt Well my cat also scratched the wall as well. Had to stain the wood to hide the scratch marks. So far, so good. The rescreened windows look fantastic now.

      ***** This room is for them. An enclosed patio with tons of windows and cheap wood paneling on walls. I'm fixing everything to move. Cats go nuts when I'm away for many days looking at homes out of state even with friends that give food and water. They usually go outside everyday. Drive me nuts. But I still love them.

    thanks for the helpful post. i was thinking of paying someone to do the removal/installation but you make it look so easy i think i'll try it myself. just a thought, i wonder if you can do the same procedure for a nylon screen. we are in a coastal area and aluminum screens corrode and becomes brittle after a few years.

    • @Iscaper
      @Iscaper  10 років тому +1

      Yes, same process for nylon screens. Let me know how it goes for you.

    good video; so tension/tauntness is not an issue? I was expecting some level of stretch while doing which would be tougher.

    • @Iscaper

      James Campbell
      Screen tension is an issue. I put a bit of sideways pressure on the screen when rolling in the spline. Careful though, too much pressure and the screen will tear.

    Hi, this is a very helpful video. The use of duct tape is a great tip -- for holding the screen square and to the correct dimension. Question -- what is that tree with the pinkish leaves??? It's so pretty. Thank you.

    What keeps the screen tight so there are no wrinkles in it while you are putting in the spline?
