Shi Tingmao splash makes the others seem as if they cannonball into the pool. each one did very well in their dives but she just wiped the diving board with their asses splash wise.

the not-so-subtle difference from the commentator...when the Chinese do well, she gives a "nearly perfect" comment and when the Italian does well it's "lovely diving". You may not agree with how the Chinese train their athletes but each athlete went through probably a lot more years of training than your average athletes to achieve these results, so lose that passive aggressiveness and give them the applause they deserve.

Of course, I know how much training and effort each diver puts into their work and I'm not a diver but if I'd never seen a person dive before and Shi Tingmao's was the first person I saw, I would think diving would be so easy... then I would try and create the biggest splash in history.

The judges and commentors seem to judge them as if they were in their own exclusive league (which they are). But they are competing against others, if they lead by a hige difference, let that show in the scores!!

I am Chinese, I have been watching diving foe 20 years. Let’s make this clear, all Chinese divers in Olympics finals must perform perfect and their scores must be at least 8.5! Better 9 or 9.5 all way through! Otherwise the dives are considered as an unsuccessful dive, and they may lose the competition. The judges expect better performance from Chinese divers compared to divers from the other country because the Chinese are too dominant in This sport.

Keith Lee a few points here. 1) you need to remember that the judges watch the dives in real time and they don't get slow motion or any replays. It's difficult see every little flaw. 2) yes the Italian's dive had flaws, but they were relatively minor. 9s was a good score for it. He Zi's dive was very good in the air and the takeoff, but was just slightly overrotated and very splashy on the end. I think 8s and 8.5s was fair. 3) the Chinese divers went 1st and 2nd place. If they were really lowering the Chinese scores, then why did the Chinese still outscore everyone else by such a huge margin? Wouldn't the biased judges try to prevent that?
Jackson Tutt You' re right. I think that Chinese are always hepled by the judges, even in the world Championships in Budapest. I remember that in 1m springboard men judges clearly overscored Chinese dives and they won for just 3/4 points. If they had judged fairly, Italian diver would have won for sure. Now Tania Cagnotto is an italian commentator for Italian tv and during world championships she often said that Chinese weren' t penalized when they missed a dive.
Jonathan Cavallin idk, that last dive by shi tingmao is almost perfect - enough height, clean entry and hardly any splash at all. should've gotten more than 81 in my opinion. anyway, i'm not a diving pro so my opinion on how the scoring should be is not counted. but i don't think olympic judges are biased in giving out their scores, or no one would believe in the olympics anymore, or any world games for that matter. i think we should just appreciate what we just saw and give out praise to those three girls who deserve it, whatever their nationality is.

I tried diving at the local pool and it didn't take me long to realize that water is hard and it hurts. I was done after a couple belly flops, never to try again. I admit it , I don't like pain and have nothing but respect and admiration for their accomplishments. Well done ladies, win or lose you all are champions and deserve recognition for your efforts. You make a very difficult sport look easy when it is NOT. Again WELL DONE
I've sometimes wondered if the constant impact to the head might not be detrimental in the long run . Not sure if Einstein would have come up with his theories had he been a p!at form diver .
jaaaythaagoat I used to go to swimming races (not as big as the olympics) but the water is usually pretty cold because hot water makes you relaxed but cold water helps you awaken
I used to compete in regional and nationals and it's pretty pretty cold. I swom so the shock of diving into the water gave you the kick, it was still always a bit of a pain in the neck for me.
Tania Cagnotto was the most "Chinese" diver amongst the divers from the rest of the World: one of the few athletes capable to win a gold medal in a World Championship ahead of two chinese divers (Kazan 2015, where she beat Shi Tingmao and He Zi). She finally took in Rio her "Olympic revenge" from London, where she lost two medals by few cents of points, earning two medals.
Tania Cagnotto, the third medalist said once that the chinese deserve to win as their commitment to the sport is absolute whilst she was just dedicating only part of her life to the sport, with really stunning results, as all can see.
It’s a shame what happened to the diving/synchro venue after the Olympics (fell into disuse) because it was a beautiful outdoor pool and they could’ve just opened it to the public but they didn’t...

I used to compete in regional and nationals and it's pretty pretty cold. I swom so the shock of diving into the water gave you the kick, it was still always a bit of a pain in the neck for me.
yes but no warm water makes you feel more comfortable and relaxed when cild water gives you a boast of energy

Tania Cagnotto was the most "Chinese" diver amongst the divers from the rest of the World: one of the few athletes capable to win a gold medal in a World Championship ahead of two chinese divers (Kazan 2015, where she beat Shi Tingmao and He Zi). She finally took in Rio her "Olympic revenge" from London, where she lost two medals by few cents of points, earning two medals.
