Well I left my home younger than my family woulda wanted,
And not 'cause I was angry no or nothing,
It was 'cause all I could see was monotony and the highway knew my name,
    And she was calling.
Well there's a freight-liner coming to steal away my mind,
And take me to whatever comfort, I may find,
Well there's a freight-liner coming to steal away my mind,
And take me to whatever comfort, I may find,
My mother said to me, as I turned to leave, what demons bereave you so?
Go if you must go, I'll love you more than you know,
But come back one day and please stay or don't come back at all.
She said marauder, marauder, don't you be like your father,
Marauder, marauder, please be a better man,
Marauder, marauder, Don't you leave no tracks to hide,
Marauder, marauder, don't you lead a life of crime.
Well a kind man took me to his farm, gave me a place to sleep,
And his daughter had eyes for me I was thinking I may keep,
Well the night had come, the moon was young and shee was warm beside me,
I went to the house to fetch my gun but her father saw right through me,
He said marauder, marauder, stay away from my daughter,
Marauder, marauder, don't you take her from my land,
Marauder, marauder stay away from my daughter,
Don't you take her from me even though I know you can.
So I left alone in a violent storm, walked towards a line of steel,
Drank so much shine I should be blind, but I guess the devel and I had a deal,
'Cause I woke up cold but not quite dead, with the demons of hell thrashing 'round in my head,
And as I looked to see what had become of me I met the boot of an RCMP.
He said Marauder, marauder, Don't you even bother,
Marauder, marauder, you ain't welcome in this town,
Marauder, marauder, we've had up to hear with your kind,
Marauder, marauder, there's only a grave for you here to find.
Well where, where oh where is the big rock candy mountain?
All I seem to find is a bridge and a bottle of gin,
Some pretty girl to turn up my chin and a mind that won't stop wandererin',
Yeah a mind that just won't stop wanderin'.
So light 'em up and smash 'em down, let's get fucked up and leave this town,
Grab your dog, grab your backpack I'll meet you southside of the main track.
Marauders, marauders, Ride on, keep moving, my sisters and brothers, marauders, marauders.
So light 'em up and smash 'em down, let's get fucked up and leave this town,
Grab your dog, grab your backpack I'll meet you southside of the main track.

This hit me right in the heart. I have done this exact thing. Lived this life. I have lived this exact scenario. Had a pretty girl who looked at me like that, while I played and sang, with a dog wandering around and friends gathered around listening. I played street shows, where crowds would gather. Traveled the west coast. Down along the coast through the SW and into Oklahoma. I shot heroin, meth, any drug I could get my hands on. Although I speak on the times with love, they were regrettable. I made a lot of bad choices, spent a lot of time in jail, witnessed a lot of violence, over-doses, and death. But I will never forget the feeling of camaraderie, all us Dirty Kids had. They felt like the only real family I ever had.
    RIP Jesse
    RIP to all passed DK's.

Once upon a time, I was new to the road. I found myself in Slab City, CA. In 2016, I got the first tattoo I had ever gotten outside a professional shop, in a tent in that desert. It was a very meaningful tattoo for me and when the artist was done, I walked out of the tent, and the very first thing I heard was a fellow traveler playing her own cover of this song. I broke down and cried, right there in the desert, in the middle of the day. It was one of the most sublime and meaningful experiences of my life. I don't know if she'll ever see this, but if she does, I want to thank Chela for playing that song that day, right at that moment.

I just want to say about 3 days before this song was put on UA-cam I had a heart attack at 24 years old from working 100 hour weeks doing construction (with a 4 year degree btw), drinking a 5th of Jameson a night, and doing whatever I could get my hands on before I checked in with the foreman at 7am. when I heard this song, 3 days later as i contemplated my mortality, it made me feel like I was still the hell raising bad ass that I'd always been. since then I've got married, had a daughter, and found a job I love and didnt compromise on for the sake of the daily grind. everytime I hear this song it reenergizes me and makes me feel strong in my convictions and love of life, as relentless and fucked as it may be.

    [Verse 1]
Well I left my home younger than my family would'a wanted
And not cause I was angry no or nothing
It was all I could see was monotony
And the highway knew my name
    And she was calling
    She was calling
There's a freightliner coming to steal away my mind
And take me to whatever comfort I may find
There's a freightliner coming to steal away my mind
And take me to whatever comfort I may find
My mother said to me as I turned to leave
    What demons bereave you so?
    Go if you must go
Love you more than you know
Come back one day and please stay or don't come back at all
    [Chorus]
She said marauder, marauder, don't you be like your father
Marauder, marauder, don't you lead a life of crime
Marauder, marauder, don't you be like your father
Marauder, marauder, please be a better man
    [Verse 2]
Well a kind man took me to his farm
Gave me a place to sleep
But his daughter had eyes for me
I was thinking I may keep
Well the night had come, the moon was young
And she was warm beside me
Went to the house to fetch my gun
But her father saw right through me, yeah
I keep no wife I lost my sons
I won't be leaving alone on my doorstep
Said I lost my wife, I keep no sons
So leave me alone at my door
    I was kind to you
Gave you a bed and food and still you want more

    [Chorus]
He said marauder, marauder, stay away from my daughter
Marauder, marauder, don't you take her from my land
Marauder, marauder, stay away from my daughter
Marauder, marauder, don't you take her from me
Even though I know you can
    [Verse 3]
Well I left alone in a violent storm
Walked towards a line of steel
Drank some moonshine, I should be blind
Guess the devil and I had a deal
Cause I woke up cold but not quite dead
With the demons of Hell thrashing round in my head
As I looked to see what had become of me
I met the boot of an RCMP
    [Chorus]
He said marauder, marauder, don't you even bother
Marauder, marauder, we've had it up to here with your kind
Marauder, marauder, you ain't welcome in this town
Marauder, marauder, there's nothin' but a grave here
    For you to find
    [Verse 4]
Well where, oh where, is the Big Rock Candy Mountain?
All I seem to find is a bridge and a bottle of gin
Some pretty girl turn up my chin
But a mind that won't stop wandering
Yeah, a mind just won't stop wandering
So light 'em up and smash 'em down
Let's get fucked up and leave this town
Grab your dog, grab your backpack
Meet you South side of the first track

    [Bridge]
    Marauders, Marauders
    Ride on, keep moving
    My sisters, my brothers
    Marauders, marauders
    [Outro]
So light 'em up and smash 'em down
Let's get fucked up and we'll leave this town
Grab your dog, grab your backpack
Meet you South side of the main track

Your song so raw and full emotion always helped me. Helped my depression or when i walk drunk along the road in the middle of the night.. Rest in peace man.

Jesse, you seriously motivated me to get the finger out. I've been playing tenor Irish banjo for 14 months and bought an Irish bouzouki a few months back but continued playing jigs and reels as opposed to branching outside of traditional Irish music.
Found this song and cold beer maybe two months ago and now I can play chords and sing while playing (a little bit). My next challenge will be grow old or when you're gone. Absolutely love your music and the raw energy you bring.
Sitting in a Forest banging out tunes is very much my ideal buzz and you've nailed it. Hope you're good my man! Hope to see some new uploads at some stage!
