It is a winding drum elevator very common during this era. Basement installs were typical. Not used in commercial installations anymore, however still with home elevator systems.
There is mention in the description "the first elevator in the Bay Area" was this referring to the SF-Bay Area? I know of an Otis bird cage winding drum elevator in Berkeley, CA near UC Berkeley close to my old job which was installed around 1908 in a four floor office building. In a redevelopment plan for the downtown area, it was mentioned it was one of the oldest elevators in the western U.S. The elevator was manually controlled, I had ridden it a few times. Worked very well. The building is being converted to apartments, however the elevator is being preserved as historic to the building as a landmark.
These winding drums worked on the same principal as a traction machine, expect the latter has a fixed driven sheave and deflector sheave. Whereby the drum wound up the cable splaying from the back and front with a sliding/traveling defector sheave on the counterweight side.
I appreciate people like that who preserve stuff of this nature
OMG, I have the worst life long elevator phobia but this is really stunning. What a find, and great piece of history.
Any historic elevator should be running. Elevators back then had good quality. They are also my favorite
idk why i am here but i like this types of videos, (im from italy)
pro trick : watch series on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching loads of movies lately.

Holy moly that elevator is gorgeous. Love it when people preserve this stuff.
They should try to put that thing back in service!
Agreed
I would love to do that its very interesting vintage electro-mechanical technology.
The post to the left of the elevator is stunning too. I see remnants of a staircase that was to the left. Love the 19th century.
It makes me so sad that buildings have lost such beautiful touches!

Tampa Bay, Florida
Tampa Bay Area.
That's awesome!!!
Since Warner Elevator was founded in 1889, it's obvious that the brick section of this former hotel is the part that contains the old elevator.
gurge just got a+
Oh this should be restored to workig condition!
Bottom drive traction elevator

Why would they cover that
Is that the elevator Biden used to come out of the basement?
Lmao who hurt you?
