Every time we talk about Korean dance and Chinese folk dance, we talk about them together, but they are very different. Korean dance pursues restraint and elegance. Korean dances that are famous worldwide include fan dance and janggu dance. However, when they become famous, the side effect is that while it is good to follow along, there are countries that claim it as theirs.lol

So I 1000% agree with you that they are Different different, and I apologize for phrasing them similarly! My initial exposure to asian classical dance came from China, so it's my efforts in trying to establish where my scope lies! I've been receiving some INCREDIBLE info to better my knowledge of the cultural dances so I'm excited to apply what I've learned!

The firsts here are way more talented than what they did here for choreo. They mostly ended up skilling down so that everyone can follow along. But the end is funny, I won't spoil it ;P. I didn't think korean folk dance would be so cool, i'm also excited to see more from them. =)

@@leexeseul so I just wrapped up filming for Episode 2 and I’m really excited with how this format is structured this far!!

yes they are generally marking but the genuine performance of the choreo wouldn't be much different, it isn't muted, the entire genre is comprised of symbolic references, movements and gestures as well as overall restraint and containment. if you look into korean history just a little bit you'd find the performances a lot more fitting. the genre showcases power through restraint and strength through the smallest movements, every single position, hand shape, and movement has a meaning some emphasizing the power of the elements like water, earth, fire, and even parts of weather like the wind and some even referencing old korean folk tales. it's so beautifully intricate even without overly big movements. it's deeply cultural, spiritual, respectful and symbolic, representing korean culture beautifully.

    so much fun, thank you!!
i have so many questions and thoughts...
but first.this is from a POV of a totally ignorant person... I guess I could represent the casual viewer who is just amazed by all of this...
1- I agree with you that in general all the performances feel a bit muted. I suspect they might feel insecure with the music, maybe. When watching their old performances with korean folk music it just looks so grandiose and bold, and here seems to be lacking that.
3- for an ignorant eye like mine, most performances in these clips looked like contemporary dance... I would love to know which moves are specifically taken from korean dance.
4- the first performance by the top dancer is chosen. But something that confused me is that most dancers thought it was too difficult, but to me it feels the most muted. i dont know, i might be completely wrong.

I'm no expert and have no knowledge regarding dancing but I think for the dancers to think his choreography was hard is because of the vibe. His vibe is difficult to copy and his choreography would only look good for certain people with certain vibe if I'm making sense. Also, M-net is trying to make him the spotlight of the Korean dance group, not that he doesn't deserve that spot but it's quite obvious. He definitely is my favorite from the Korean dance group but that choreography wasn't his strongest in my opinion.

@@Jinglism8 yes you are right. I think the writers of this show are building a narrative where the legendary dancer might get dethroned by a younger dancer later on in the competition. This is just the first chapter of the drama, and I am guessing this is why they are giving him more screen time. So if you see the show giving screen time as well to other dancers (more than others) might be because they will have important roles in the next episodes. And well this dancer genuinely seems to be a famous figure in the industry. MNET can make questionable and manipulative stuff sometimes, but with this one, so far, I think they are being extremely respectful. Still, it is understandable that they will be writing storylines with the contestants (usually they just exaggerate things that happened for real)... cause 12 episodes of just dancing might be a bit too much for the casual viewer. So far, I am loving everything, except a bit of the meangirling between the contestants... but it is also funny so not a big deal.

@@chcc3934 Yeah, and it's funny how M-net just exaggerated the fight between the ballet dudes and made them seem like rivals- Between the centre of Black Swan(I forgot his name) and Kim Yuchan. But in real life, they just worked under the same production company like two months ago. I think in episode 1, screen time was quite fair but it's so obvious that they tried to cut everyone apart from the ones they usually give screen time in episode 2. Well, it's no surprise actually since it's M-net.

@@Jinglism8 i just finished watching and they make it look like they really dislike each other... it might not be real right? i wonder if all these tension about who gets which role or position in a production might be what really happens inside dance companies...

I watched episode 2 and I know whose choreo got picked, but now seeing them all I don't get it 😅 IDK if it was out of respect for the guy but there were much cooler dances from other guys that the one that got picked

I can see why they selected who they did based off of the two very cohesive ones were the opposite which made them the “not competitive choice” if that makes sense. It’s the normal street fighter decision making from their dance rank mission!
