The alternate timeline where Mai dies in that Earth bender ambush would be wild. Azula probably recruits a Yuyan Archer, Zuko never forms a loving relationship, the Boiling Rock’s warden immediately turns Zuko over to the Fire Lord, Sokka is probably captured at the Boiling Rock, the rest of the Gaang never learn what happened to Sokka and Zuko on their fishing trip, Aang never learns of Ozai’s plan for Sozin’s Comet, and the Earth Kingdom is reduced to ash.
It’s a good thing Aang didn’t let Mai get crushed by those rocks.
My inner Zutara shipper is morbidly excited for this timeline. 🤣
@@camocamilla98 just because Mai isn’t there doesn’t mean Zutara happens, in fact their chances of happening are worse. If events unfold as I’ve described them then Zuko gets sent back to his father, and is most likely executed. Even if he’s not, their field trip for vengeance hasn’t happened so even if the Gaang is aware of his capture Katara wouldn’t be in a hurry to rescue him. No field trip equals no forgiveness equals Zutara not happening.
If I missed something in the domino effect of events that leads to Zutara happening I’d be interested to hear it.
Could you imagine if zuko mentions that mai, her mom, and baby brother died at omashu and aang, katara, and sokka slowly realize what he meant and tried their hardest not to look suspicious only for aang to come clean, and zuko goes completely crazy.

Ty Lee saying her aura is pinker is reference to the belief that certain colours influence mood (also known as chromotherapy). Like a mood ring. Pink = calm and cheerful. Azula was basically going "that's bs but sure"
Also I think the talk about waiting for the right moment to strike was Bumi implying to Aang that not only was he NOT the right master, but that Aang wasn't ready to learn earth yet. Combined Toph later stating that earthbenders need to be steady and unshakeable (like a rock, obv), it allows for a more balanced image of earthbending: solid, steady, and precise.

Yeah most people had no idea what an air nomad looked like. Almost no one was alive from back when they existed. There was no internet or even photographs. The average person probably didn’t travel far from home because it was so difficult and time consuming. Aang’s outfit could just be the signature clothes of some faraway village (we’ve seen that not everyone in the Earth kingdom wears green.) Although I guess it’s still a bit strange Azula didn’t immediately recognize him since you’d think Zhao would’ve given Ozai a description.

As someone who made a Mai cosplay from scratch, yes, she has a whole armory under her clothes and it's difficult as hell to move while carrying that many knives.
On the plus side, it doubles as a form of armor!
Bumi teaching Aang about neutral jing later in a really significant yet subtle way. Toph practices Neutral jing better than anyone else, and the show goes through great lengths to show her listening and waiting for the best time to strike
The best time to strike is also part of understanding the subtleties of the episode itself, rather than the major consequences Danny mentioned it’s one kid inconveniencing them. Partly because they’d go darker in other episodes and partly because that lesson isn’t always obvious. So Bumi says it and despite what they just went through they don’t get it yet.
I also think it's cool when iroh said that he took practices from all of the bending types so when he's fighting you can actually tell that he's using neutral jing
That's true but I think Danny wasn't saying that's irrelevant, he does say it's important to point out that earth bending is about waiting and listening. But the jing thing just comes out of nowhere and is never mentioned again so it just seems like the writers are saying look at us look at what we know about Eastern culture 😂

Using neutral Jing is also how aang beats Ozai
I always figured Aang could just be a weirdo, LARPing around in some old clothes or something. I wouldn’t necessarily assume that someone in old clothes would actually be a hundred year old demi god.
True but these arent just “old clothes” he’s wearing the traditional garb of an ancient airbending monk, who have all been wiped out 100 years ago and there’s literally no way to acquire one of those robes anymore, not to mention only 1 person in the world is known to possess them so if you see those robes you should either assume its aang or someone that robbed him i guess which would still be worth stopping him to ask about 😂

I think it's very telling that Azula chooses 2 friends, non benders, instead of military specialists or spies. She doesn't underestimate anyone and she's clever to choose people others might. She's also picking ones she is certain are 100% loyal to her, not the nation, not the cause, HER. And she's also making sure sje is unmistakably above her team. They are young noble girls and non benders, not adults with power or experience beyond hers
3:30 Danny you're exactly right but it's the opposite. In retrospect, if he let the boulders kill Mai, she wouldn't have been able to help Zuko and Sokka escape the Boiling Rock with Hakoda. Zuko and Sokka would still be prisoners, and Zuko would not have been able to inform the team of Ozai's plan to decimate the Earth Kingdom with Sozen's comet. I think this right here is what the monks (air nomads) would have referred to as "karma."
Not to mention Azula would be perfectly in shape mentallly so basically hard/impossible to take out, on the other hand Zuko would even be more screwd up, especially if he found out earthbenders killed Mai since he liked her before his banishment and was close to her. Maybe he would not be so ready to go against Firenation at all ...
Re zuko's swords, this is his second pair. He probably lost his first pair in that explosion in S1, so yea the pair he currently uses he did steal. However you're right in remembering that he probably brought swords with him from the fire nation or at least got them very early in his exile, considering nothing comes natural to Zuko and he would've needed a few years to master them to the extent that he did. And then he steals the second pair due to his current situation and him being fed up with life as a poor fugitive.
I actually believe 'nothing coming naturally to him' isn't entirely true. Zuko is, even in the very beginning, capable of taking on benders with those swords, without using any bending of his own; a feat rarely achieved by all but the most capable warriors, unless the individual in question uses dirty fighting and ambush tactics to win (looking at you Jett.) This to me shows that his ability with these blades borders on the exceptional, and it doesn't matter how long you train, it takes no small amount of talent to reach that level of proficiency. Otherwise nonbenders would always pose a threat to benders with standard weapons, and we can clearly see that's not the case, only exceptional fighters like Mai, Tai Lee, and Sokka (yes, he *is* exceptional) can pull that off.
@@CanisMythson true, I didn't mean to imply he had no talent to begin with, he is an exceptionally good fighter. But I don't think he's ever been a born natural at anything, unlike azula. So yes I agree with your point about not everyone being able to pull off the level of skill he demonstrates, but I do think he attained it through sheer will power and endurance, rather than pure strength or innate talent.

I think the metal being an obstacle for earth benders goes back to at least the ship made entirely of metal for the express purpose of holding earth benders at sea. But it is definitely mentioned a few times.

I agree the Jing line is awkward. Imo it would’ve been better to call it by name last: “there’s a philosophy in earth bending that involves waiting and watching for the right time to strike: it’s called jing”. I just realized though: Iroh begging is ALSO jing… he’s a powerful general choosing to hide-Zuko has no chill and wants to just charge in; it really shows the wisdom Iroh has gleaned from all places.

The vine guy has almost maybe the best message in the whole show ...everyone is connected and we are all the same, there is zero reason to keep killing each other or hate each other we are all people I love it its so deep and its a kid show thats why this show is a legend because its very message heavy
I know sokka being so untrusting may be annoying to some but honestly its pretty refreshing for me. Not that i don't love aang and katara but rewatching has really made me appreciate sokka alot more. Also definitely think you'll love vanitas no carte so consider watching it in the future!

Zuko did have his own set of dual swords in season 1 when he rescued Aang from Zhao, but I think that after his ship exploded and he and Iroh were stranded and exiled, he stole this new set and it became his for the rest of the season

Sokka has a club and a machete. A machete is a tool and he's using it correctly in this episode, not exactly the same as a sword. He didn't often use it for fighting cause he sees it as a tool, not a weapon.

You know, before Korra came out, I always thought this meant Toph died first. After all, the visions are of people they "loved and lost", which I took to mean that she died first and Aang "lost" her in the future. Since time is supposedly an illusion or whatever.

I think when it comes to aang seeing Toph in this episode while the others see important past relationships I think you have the wrong idea. The swamp intentionally brought them in. It probably did that in order to give aang the information he needed, that being who his earth bending teacher should be. Sokka and katara were just along for the ride so the ended up seeing things that were also on their minds.
The scaffolding set for the fight scene was actually a reused idea from the unaired pilot

Neutral jing doesn't come up obv in the show, yet it is so memorable that when I went through The Rise of Kiyoshi for the first time, years after watching this episode, I still instantly remembered neutral jing (even w/ memory so bad I have a medical reason.)

My favorite part of the swamp episode is actually Katara seeing her future self and mistaking it for her mother. It's a cool little detail you only really notice on a rewatch.
Zuko stole his Blue Spirit mask. The first one blew up with the ship. This one he stole from a cart in town that sells masks. They show the mask when they are begging for money
I mean, if Aang had *not* saved Mai, Zuko would've possibly dated Jin in Ba Sing Se, or maybe Zutara would've been a thing, and due to those two possible variants he might not have helped Azula kill Aang; finally there would've been no Mai to save Zuko from the Boiling Rock... So that would've been decisive for the whole series. And that doesn't include how much Mai helped Azula in their fights, which might've head different outcomes.
Zuko had dual swords already, but when he became an outcast he had to leave them behind. This is just him getting a new set

If Aang had let those rocks hit them Mei wouldn’t have been there to save them at the boiling rock and it would’ve crippled the entire war effort taking out the leader of the kyoshi warriors, the leader of the southern water tribe, and both the planner of the final attack and the avatars fire bending teacher. You could argue that Aang saving them is the reason they could win the war

appa had a saddle so the swamp benders should have known that appa was someone's pet imo and Zukos twin swords got destroyed when the pirates tried to assassinate him (which should still be a crime on Zhou since he is a still prince right?) so this is how he gets his new swords. I feel like we all ignore the fact that Ozai is literally the ONLY person that can control Azula in any way and that's really only because like Zuko, she still places her self worth in her father's approval.
I'm not sure if we can really appreciate just how dangerous that makes her. Cause what would happen if Azula suddenly decided that she didn't need Ozai's approval anymore?
It took both Zuko and Katara to take her down in the end. After they had both had over a year to train and perfect their bending. Who was gonna stop her from becoming a one woman extermination force if she had lost that krutch immediately? Sure, Iroh could, but I really don't think he'd be down with outright killing his neice. Cause we all know that's what it would take to stop Azula at 100% maximum effort.
I don't think Ozai would put much effort into stopping her either. As long as she didn't directly interfere with his goals, he'd probably see it as a minor nuisance rather than an outright disaster. Chances are she's wasn't going to target any of the fire nation, considering she was raised to be a psychopathic, xenophobic, nationalist and all that. He'd probably weigh the pros and cons, before deciding to just let her go.
So, how much damage do yall think she would do before SOMEONE found a way to kill her?
