I got my pharmacy license in 2018 never got national certified. Worked as a Outpatient Pharmacy Clerk for a 1.5 years and left at $30.75/hr This job was to get my foot in the door. Now I am in Inpatient Pharmacy making $37/hr with no experience what so ever. I’m so blessed! 3 months experience as a tech and counting.
I know i different with what company you are with. There are 3 hospital here and 2 of 3 are right about the same and 1 is a couple of dollars different pending on experience
I started in the Air force in 1998 - 2010 ($9 - $18) then finished my Bachlor's Degree in Healthcare Management but never left the pharmacy (part time at around $18 CVS and Rite Aid) I only started making money once I became a federal employee in the inpatient pharmacy as a certified IV chemotherapy technician ($26 per hour). Now, I make $35 hour as a Clinical Pharmacy Technician at JBLM.
I started this course through Walmart @ Penn Foster & I love it. It is self pace & you have 3 yrs to complete it. I started this course because I wanted to leave retail & transition to a more reliable field such as medical but w/o being a cna. I really believe getting a medical trade is worth it. I am 21 now but I wish I knew this when I graduated in 17 vs going to college for 1 semester.
Same I wanted an entry into medical field. And walmart offers the free courses and I went with it hopefully I can go up in terms of career. I've been working at walmart for a month and I can't be making minimum I need to get that bread lmao

If you received your degree in pharmacy and got your assocites why would you then have to take the test to get certified? Wouldn't you just now have to apply for your lisense now with your state? I'm asking for myself also. I completed and received my assocites degree in pharmacy years ago not I want to use my degree but I never did the continued education that must be did after getting my degree so now I'm not sure what i need to do next. So regarding the Walgreens PTCB class (it might depend on the state), where I'm from they paid for my testing and after I passed, I was certified through my state. It was a 4 week class, 1 class a week and then the final test was right after. They paid for it all as long as I passed and I was a CPhT for all pharmacies. Like I said, not sure if it's state specific but from the people I've talked to, it seems like it's the same all around! As for raises, I started out as a cashier at also $11.50. I was licensed within the next month, $1 raise. I soon became certified, $1 raise. I took the immunization class, $1 raise. Then we all got $1.50 raise around my 8 months. After becoming an immunizing tech, I received 2 bonuses. 1 came after 6 months, then another after a year, both $1,000, which was nice! Then, after a year and a half, they promoted me to senior technician and my pay increased another $1.50. So there are chances at raises but I'm not sure you can really go above that. I ended up leaving due to poor management and increasing work load. They expected us to conform to tons of changes without much reward and it was not fun anymore. Things were falling through the cracks and everyone got increasingly more tense with everything. Management did not care and continued to comment on how the new things kept being neglected even though we were just trying to get through our shift without breaking down! There wasn't much help from anyone other than the fellow techs. On top of that, we were short staffed and all of our hours were being cut. Not enough time or people creates a toxic work environment, which is the main reason as to why I left. That, and the hospital I applied to has more opportunities for growth!

I am going to get hired at Marc's as a technician! I got my B.A. in communications but these jobs not hiring for real so my mom told me to get a trade and I literally tried to avoid the medical field but the coronavirus is shutting down stores and I refuse to sink during this time! I never thought I would be here to say this but God knows how to push you into what you really supposed to be doing in your life.
This literally happened to me , with different jobs of course. But I was lowkey forced into the medical field cause of COVID and my mother told me I should do it for years now I love it and I started as a cna last year , where I discovered my love for nursing and now I want to go to school to become a RN so I can travel and become an ER travel nurse, I really love medicine and wanted to try something else involving it without having to wipe butt ( lol ) and I came across a pharm tech trainee position for rite aid and I start monday, for a very low wage , dollars then what I’m used to , but I’m it’s just my area , so I plan to just stick with it , work really hard after the certification and move on to a much better paying job in a new city 😁 YOU GOT THIS!
Idk what state tour in but minimum wage has rose. So you possibly will get a dollar or two more. Crazy I make $13 as a cashier but will make $14/$15 after a year or transition to pharmacy tech I do work at Walgreens.

I say that with the demand for more workers in the pharmacies due to COVID, the pay has gone up quite a bit. I have a fellow classmate and friend who works as a pharmacy intern who gets paid around $22/hr so I imagine the techs there would be getting anywhere to $19-$20/hour, which is honestly really good! As you can imagine, the hourly rate can be vastly different among different pharmacies so be on the lookout!!

I work at Walgreens currently. It's definitely a great starting place for sure! I came already certified and get paid $12.50. I also became an immunizing technician and do pcr and rapid covid tests now but received no pay increase.

Yeah my friend (state hospital pharmacy manager) asked me if I wanted to get a job. One month later and passing the test, I’m making 33$ plus benefits. But as someone who was making 20$ cash, it still seems low. My friend told me Cvs are like paying 18$.

I just graduated with a degree in biochemistry. i’m applying to pharmacy schools but I wanted pharmacy experience so I applied to walgreens and I just started! my starting pay is $15. i will be getting certified nationally as well and my pay will increase once I do!
I had previous experience as an outpatient tech, making $15/hour in SD. Moved to MN, got a position as an uncertified inpatient tech for $22/hour, got certified and now I'm making $25/hour. A previous coworker left to take a position as a Controlled Substance tech at a neighboring hospital for $28/hour.
I worked at cvs and it was great but I knew I didn't want to work at a big retail pharmacy with crazy hours, no thanks, I went the independent pharmacy route, I get paid 14.75 and independent Pharmacies don't have crazy hours they are Monday to Friday close at 6pm , I love it

You are exactly right. Walgreens offers the class for free and you have the choice to take the PTCE or the NHA and it is your national license to take with you if/when you leave. Walgreens does NOT have a certification for “Walgreens only”. Someone miss informed her.
Wow…. That’s so weird! I was at Walgreens since high school (5years ago, on and off lmao) as a pharmacy technician and I got my trainee license by then took the NHA exam (people said it was easier) and became a a CPhT and I got my IV certification and now work for memorial hermann. But I didn’t take any courses or anything they just gave me a book to read and flash cards on the 200 drugs

So after listening to you I might hold off taking a class and see how cvs goes with home study and take the PTCE I took a sample PTCE and it was asking about the MOA of some drug and I had no idea what they were talking about. Haha I mean now I know about mechanism of action cuz I looked it up. San Francisco state has a good online course, accredited.
I got starting pay of $17.50 with Safeway pharmacy plus benefits in California. I quit two weeks later. It wasn’t for me. Also had no experience at all.
My dream is to go to med school. Unfortunately for the past 3 years of college many unfortunate events happened leading to me doing poorly in college. I am not done with my degree, but will be done soon. I am just about to become certified, but still hope I can fix things up to become a good candidate for med school. I’m certified technician at Walgreens! I wasn’t registered when I first started, Walgreens pay for you get registered with the state and also pay for your ptcb license! So I passed it on first try! But if don’t pass it u pay then get refund back!

It provides a variety of shifts, I can work in the satellite pharmacies in the OR/NICU, staff central pharmacy, compound oral suspensions, IVs and chemo, or staff as the pediatric pharmacy tech and respond to Code Blue’s through the hospital. Hospital pharmacy is the way to go.

First of all you are doing great! Where do you live where the wages are like this? I work in LAF hoods everyday and am at 30 an hour! I would stay away from hospital pharmacies because the FDA is cracking down at them and their sterility. 503b pharmaceutical facilities are the future.
I got hired at one of the Walgreens call center. During my interview I was told I will be cross train for pharmacy technician with them. I am currently doing the PT course with Ashworth. I chose to apply to Walgreens because I need the experience, plus certified. I was to by a rep at the pharmacy board in my state that they do not take accreditation from Ashworth but they take it from Walgreens. The salary is really cheap at Walgreens call center $12.50.

Hey so if you take the class at walgreens. You take a pretest to see how well you do . Then if you score hugh enough, they will pay the fee for the national board of pharmacy test to get certified .

I worked in a ecommerce manufacturing company and let me tell you I started making $18 and within a 3 months I was at $22. And that was NOT a professional job, repeat- WAS NOT- then when I see this tech pharmaceutical -certified or not and making this low money its insulting to their capacity
Yes, either a federal prison or the Department of Veteran affairs. (VA) they’ll pay $20 plus an hour and you can work OT and make $30-$40 an hr. I know I am a pharmacy tech who’s federally employed.

I started working as a trainee in 2019 my starting pay was $13 with no previous experiences at all I worked in cvs for 2 years the pay only increased to $13.51 even after getting certified so they suck. I quit the job and I just started with Walmart as a certified tech in may 9th the starting pay was way better and they give tons of bounce and flexible schedule. I work in New Jersey as a certified tech i make $16.69 After being with cvs for 4 years. I finally landed a job at a hospital making $18.46. Cvs will pay for you to take the certification 1 time pass or fail. I didnt have any schooling when I began working as a tech .

Yes. When I first got the job, a lady from HR offered me the flat rate over the phone. I simply told her that I would like to matched what I got paid at my old job as a pharmacy technician and they took me up on my offer!
Could I get a follow up? Has Penn Foster certs got you in where you wanted? Are they accredited everywhere? No matter what state? I'd hate to spend the money and not be able to test because the school isn't recognized in my area.

That's a great question. No, medical school was not a factor when getting that job. Someone that worked with me put in a good word at the hospital and encouraged me to apply and I got the job! I do think that the certification would give you a better chance of being a hospital pharmacy technician. However, you can get the job without the certification.

There’s certifications you have to have to work in certain places also with the degree.

I say that with the demand for more workers in the pharmacies due to COVID, the pay has gone up quite a bit. I have a fellow classmate and friend who works as a pharmacy intern who gets paid around $22/hr so I imagine the techs there would be getting anywhere to $19-$20/hour, which is honestly really good! As you can imagine, the hourly rate can be vastly different among different pharmacies so be on the lookout!!

I work at Walgreens currently. It's definitely a great starting place for sure! I came already certified and get paid $12.50. I also became an immunizing technician and do pcr and rapid covid tests now but received no pay increase.

Yeah my friend (state hospital pharmacy manager) asked me if I wanted to get a job. One month later and passing the test, I’m making 33$ plus benefits. But as someone who was making 20$ cash, it still seems low. My friend told me Cvs are like paying 18$.

How do y’all get hired at Walgreens for apprenticeships? My application always gets denied
I had previous experience as an outpatient tech, making $15/hour in SD. Moved to MN, got a position as an uncertified inpatient tech for $22/hour, got certified and now I'm making $25/hour. A previous coworker left to take a position as a Controlled Substance tech at a neighboring hospital for $28/hour.
I worked at cvs and it was great but I knew I didn't want to work at a big retail pharmacy with crazy hours, no thanks, I went the independent pharmacy route, I get paid 14.75 and independent Pharmacies don't have crazy hours they are Monday to Friday close at 6pm , I love it
Here in CA if you work for one of the popular hospital systems you can get $30 an hour..
What about not so popular hospitals?

Just today I got hired as a designated hitter for Walgreens, from my understanding you get your PTCB and it’s yours you can take it anywhere .
You are exactly right. Walgreens offers the class for free and you have the choice to take the PTCE or the NHA and it is your national license to take with you if/when you leave. Walgreens does NOT have a certification for “Walgreens only”. Someone miss informed her.
Wow…. That’s so weird! I was at Walgreens since high school (5years ago, on and off lmao) as a pharmacy technician and I got my trainee license by then took the NHA exam (people said it was easier) and became a a CPhT and I got my IV certification and now work for memorial hermann. But I didn’t take any courses or anything they just gave me a book to read and flash cards on the 200 drugs

I took a sample PTCE and it was asking about the MOA of some drug and I had no idea what they were talking about. Haha I mean now I know about mechanism of action cuz I looked it up. San Francisco state has a good online course, accredited.

I got starting pay of $17.50 with Safeway pharmacy plus benefits in California. I quit two weeks later. It wasn’t for me. Also had no experience at all.

I’m certified technician at Walgreens! I wasn’t registered when I first started, Walgreens pay for you get registered with the state and also pay for your ptcb license! So I passed it on first try! But if don’t pass it u pay then get refund back!

I do actually, it’s the easiest job I’ve ever had and gives me the flexibility to be a student. It provides a variety of shifts, I can work in the satellite pharmacies in the OR/NICU, staff central pharmacy, compound oral suspensions, IVs and chemo, or staff as the pediatric pharmacy tech and respond to Code Blue’s through the hospital. Hospital pharmacy is the way to go.

I took me about 4 months to adjust to all the different shifts and familiarize myself with the hospital. It a decent size 450+ bed hospital with a lot to do.

First of all you are doing great! Where do you live where the wages are like this? I work in LAF hoods everyday and am at 30 an hour! I would stay away from hospital pharmacies because the FDA is cracking down at them and their sterility. 503b pharmaceutical facilities are the future.
I got hired at one of the Walgreens call center. During my interview I was told I will be cross train for pharmacy technician with them. I am currently doing the PT course with Ashworth. I chose to apply to Walgreens because I need the experience, plus certified. I was to by a rep at the pharmacy board in my state that they do not take accreditation from Ashworth but they take it from Walgreens. The salary is really cheap at Walgreens call center $12.50.

I applied to a compounding pharmaceutical company in a entry-level position with ZERO experience with a salary range of $15-17. I am so scared to commit to a path that I will struggle to move up.
I started to realize this is the wrong path, I see many and many stories for individuals who get paid very very unfair being professionals.
Hey so if you take the class at walgreens. You take a pretest to see how well you do . Then if you score hugh enough, they will pay the fee for the national board of pharmacy test to get certified .

I got into the hospital because I knew someone that worked there and they referred me. I interviewed well and got the position! My suggestion would be to apply, apply, apply, and keep applying.
Just interviewed for a pharmacy clerk position at ACME market and the starting pay is $16/hr. I will only be able to work the front desk because I’m not certified.I’m currently taking a pharmacy tech course and I’m pretty sure the pay will increase once certified.

I worked in a ecommerce manufacturing company and let me tell you I started making $18 and within a 3 months I was at $22. And that was NOT a professional job, repeat- WAS NOT- then when I see this tech pharmaceutical -certified or not and making this low money its insulting to their capacity

Yes, either a federal prison or the Department of Veteran affairs. (VA) they’ll pay $20 plus an hour and you can work OT and make $30-$40 an hr. I know I am a pharmacy tech who’s federally employed.
That is a good choice, in terms of money. But not everyone personalities fit to that. Trust me

I started working as a trainee in 2019 my starting pay was $13 with no previous experiences at all I worked in cvs for 2 years the pay only increased to $13.51 even after getting certified so they suck.
I quit the job and I just started with Walmart as a certified tech in may 9th the starting pay was way better and they give tons of bounce and flexible schedule. So it’s the best place to be at as a student.

hospital with experience 22/24 certified same but 26 my highest pay when being a pharmacy technician the lowest I ever been paid was retail and mom a pop pharmacy's, 💔🙅🏽♀️ #BYE! Jk Good for starters an experience. Not forever Sorry.

I work in New Jersey as a certified tech i make $16.69 After being with cvs for 4 years. I finally landed a job at a hospital making $18.46. Cvs will pay for you to take the certification 1 time pass or fail. I didnt have any schooling when I began working as a tech .

Yes. When I first got the job, a lady from HR offered me the flat rate over the phone. I simply told her that I would like to matched what I got paid at my old job as a pharmacy technician and they took me up on my offer!
Could I get a follow up? Has Penn Foster certs got you in where you wanted? Are they accredited everywhere? No matter what state? I'd hate to spend the money and not be able to test because the school isn't recognized in my area.

I am working now in retail CVS as a pharmacy tech and just got my exam prep book in the mail. I would like to pursue a job in a hospital but have heard it’s hard to do without a higher Ed degree. That's a great question. No, medical school was not a factor when getting that job. Someone that worked with me put in a good word at the hospital and encouraged me to apply and I got the job! I do think that the certification would give you a better chance of being a hospital pharmacy technician. However, you can get the job without the certification.
