It might be an unpopular opinion but I’m gonna have to say that paraphrasing the narration to skip some of the darker parts and reducing the Wisdom of Snow to Naration was a miss here. The emotional punch it delivered in the 2012 and 2013 versions were profound even if it was dark. Maybe it was done for times sake or maybe to avoid the hardest part of the reaction of the father which could be disturbing to some. But the versions done by both East and west in 2012 (though different) just delivered the emotion and weight of the moment. Al’s guitar solo added to the original piano part was breathtaking. You could have heard a pin drop in the Toyota Center in Houston after his last note faded. Then there was Chris’s and the East rendition which made the song a power ballad that equally was great though completely different. And weather you preferred Brandon’s or Bryan’s delivery of the lines both made me believe for a second that they were the father crying out “Why!?!” from the depths of their soles.
