Your channel was one of the first I discovered after walking/running my first parkrun in Jan 2020. Had been heavier, sedentary and really unfit prior to this but your videos were an inspiration and informative. Fast forward to last Sunday and managed to say that I am now a marathoner. Thanks again for all your help in your videos. Still very much learming about this new life of being a runner.
Sitting with an injury for 4 weeks after a 30 day run streak. Listening to no 1 just made me so emotional, because it’s so demotivating to come back after injuries. And the thought of hanging up my running shoes crossed my mind every day. Thank for you the inspo. I am a runner!!! I will get through this. Thank you so much. I just found your channel, and you truly moved me.
18 months for me, i threw my running shoes away and all my kit and channels like this have inspired me to come back and start all over again and wow did i miss the feels of running
10. Keep a journal 9. Buy quality gear, look & feel good 8. Accept failure as part of process 7. Follow a structured training plan 6. Vary sessions, more fun & efficient 5. Cultivate your running passion 4. Aim long term 3. Join a group / club 2. Build slowly, run slowly 1. See yourself as a runner
Excellent tips, simple and sound. I started running in 2013, after shedding 50lbs and quitting smoking in 2010. I ran a 21K in 1h26 last month, I still can't believe it. Your self-preservation and self-motivational tips are exactly how I felt I needed to approach running, but you worded it perfectly. Thanks!
Your point made in tip 9. "A good level of trainers will reduce your chance of injury". There was actually a study which indicated that their was a correlation between the price of the shoe and an INCREASED risk of injury. Also worth mentioning that there are different styles of shoes, it's best to get properly fitted with the right running shoe. The first pair I bought online, luckily they were so wrong for me I sent them back immediately.
Thanks for these tips . I am working on my running to run a 5k in 30 mins. I join clubs but I am the slowest in the brunch . I am told by most people to run at my own pace and when I do I am then told to run faster which confused me lol.. I'm working on walking less and running more at my slow pace until I can run slow and consistent then work on increasing my speed .
Thanks Ben! I love u and Mary’s videos. Love ur point about “running for life” - this has always been my mindset and one I encourage in my children. I started fitness as a martial artist many years ago and running was always part of my training which I maintained through lots of health issues including blindness. I’m almost 50 now, I’ve had two corneal transplants and I’m so proud that all of my six children are into fitness watching my lifetime commitment. My daughter and I did our first marathon last month and we’re planning another in December. Blessings for ur efforts!🙏🏽
A good book about running is Run With the Wind, by Shion Miura. It was adapted in a film and an anime series. The story is about a group of university students who train to run the Hakone Ekiden, a traditional relay marathon in Japan. Most of them are amateurs at the beginning, but they help push each other into their individual and group goals.
New subscriber, new runner. I started my journey just walking 100m or so and gradually going for longer and longer walks. Eventually I realized I was doing 5k-10k most days and so I started to incorporate intervals of running/walking. I am really enjoying the process. I just started week 3 of one of the C25K training programs and I'm loving it so far. It's definitely a challenge for me but I've come so far already and I'm really excited for what the future brings. Thanks for all the amazing info. Your channel has some great advice and has helped me loads.
Have only recently found your channel. Been running on and off since my teens (I'm now in my 50s). Had some lapses along the way where I fell out of love with running, from a few weeks to 5 years! I got back to running with Couch to 5K in 2019, built up to a 10K and then got injured. Picked up again in 2020 and have trained consistently ever since (apart from a few months where I had to swim and gym due to health concerns - GP said that if I continued to run, I would likely have a heart attack or stroke. Given a good check up by another GP who cleared me to run and haven't looked back since. Following plans from the 80/20 running book by Matt Fitzgerald, followed the 10K plan and now moved up to the marathon plan. Constantly pushing my personal barriers, but definitely have to lose the ego when I am overtaken during Zone 2 runs. Running keeps me healthy, happy and sane. My knees get a bit sore on longer runs, but they hurt more if I don't run. To infinity and beyond!
Great video! Got a lot of "Atomic habits" vibes from a lot of these and that's a mindset and approach that has been working well for me over the last 6 months. I've gone from occasional 5k with the dog to regular park runs, increased my training distance to include at least 1 10- 15k a week, ran a couple of 10k races and just entered a half marathon trail in September... never been so motivated!
Dude I’m so obsessed with atomic habits so I’m glad you picked up on that! It was a game changing book for me. Love it. Love your energy and positivity too! Keep at it 🤟🏼😊
I was a 46=year-old beginner runner five years ago, I decided that I was a "real runner" when I saw a 2 mile training run on the plan and thought "wow, only two miles? hardly seems worth it!" LOL I am definitely a Lone Wolf, though, since I always fall into the comparison trap when I'm around others. Races are my social running. Other than that it's me and my dog. But I am highly self-motivated and focused, and I love the entire process of running. All good guidance in this video, though. Thankfully, other than the group thing, I have adopted them all. :D
I always love your videos. Always informative and great info. You guys are awesome. You have inspired and informed. I didn't start running until I was in my late forties. I am now in my 50's and I have fallen hard for running. I run during all weather out outside. Cold heat doesn't matter Thank so much. Good luck on your race
My running journey started in September 2021 at the age of 41. I had asthma pretty bad as a child so wasn't that active in my youth, but thankfully I grew out of it and was amazed to discover how much I love running when I started out. I've decided to make the anniversary by running my local half-marathon, which serendipitously will be exactly one year since I bought my first pair of running shoes :-) Covid knocked me for six and I had to have 2 months off in April and May, but since then I've built up to regularly running 30 to 35miles a week. I ran half-marathon distance for the first time yesterday and managed 1h55m at a fairly easy pace, so my race day target of sub 1h45m doesn't seem so bonkers now, but I won't be too disappointed if I don't make it, as you say there's always the next one. The content on this channel is excellent, keep up the great work!
Thanks for the tips! "Build it slowly" and "running for life" is what I needed to hear today. I'm not a beginner but I am injured and I'm trying really hard this time to stick to the cardio plan and stay positive...but you know....I might not be injured if I hadn't been racing every parkrun, doing a hard club run every Wednesday and although going easy on long run day, doing 50% of my weekly mileage in that run....lessons being re-learnt right now! Thank you🙏
I have been watching your videos for a few months now. This one might be the best. I read some of the comments and it seems that I am not alone. Thanks for the continued motivation.
Have been running since 2022 and have completed two full marathons and multiple half marathons. A regular follower of your channel and love them all. This particular video is one of the best videos that I came across for running. The tips are just on the mark and the way Ben narrated them are just awesome. Have watched this video multiple times but come back again just to feel better. Awesome work Ben and Mary. Love from India ❤🎉👏🙌🏃♂️.
I just discovered your channel today and i'm binging those videos so hard 😂 You seem like such an amazing person. I think your editing is spot on, it's nice to listen cuz your talking so passionately, and i'm afraid i just got an addiction 😂 You deserve so much more subscribers, hopefully you will motivate me and i will start running again. Strarting tomorrow. Maybe i will be updating how it's going, we'll see. So yeah, just wanted to say your videos are amazing ❤
Ha ha thanks so much and welcome to the madness!! That’s really lively feedback and I’m so appreciate that you took the time to comment! Obviously I hope you stick around but also that the vids help in some small way 😊
I'm engaged! Love this channel, thank you both for the inspiration. One of my favourite books is Mimi Anderson Beyond Impossible. Don't forget magazines for inspiration too - I subscribe to both Runners World and Women's Running, and I'm always excited when they drop through the letter box - more info and more inspiration! 😊
Ahhh thanks, as always, Julie. I actually kind of know Mimi Anderson. She’s from where I’m from in the UK. I think she trained with the Tri club that loads of my mates are at (Weald). Sounds like a lovely person 😊
Brilliant tips Ben I’m always pumped and inspired after ur vlogs - I’m down for a 25k tomorow in prep for Ladybower Trail marathon in the Peak District in 5 weeks - proper buzzing for it now - thanku 🙌🙌🏃🏻♀️💕 x
Just discovered your channel. This was the first vid I saw. Loved it!!! 51yo and began my running journey last weekend. Took your advice and invested in some gear and stuff. New shoes, compression sleeves, winter fleece, socks even a bit of Mg replacement. Been spending a bit of time thinking about how to look after myself in this journey so I will be running for a long time. Your vid was really wonderful and super motivating. Stay healthy. Blessings from Australia.
Book of choice, level up your skills with. “The Ultra Mindset” by Travis Macy. It’s Brilliant. Travis takes you on a journey that builds you as a runner and a human.. Thank you so much for the channel. I’ve followed you for the last 2 years. I don’t know how it’s taken me this long to comment. Triffic job. Cheers
Ha ha thanks so much! The comment is always welcome no matter how long it takes to make it. It’s always very much appreciated and thank you for the recommendation as well! Sounds like an amazing book 🙌🏼😊
Hey! Cheers from Mexico!!! Your channel is so "Chingon!!!" Love it. Been running for 10 years never ran a race....but I m following one of your plans to a 21K. I ll ping you on how that goes!!! Keep it up!!!!
Older Yet Faster by Keith Bateman & Heidi Jones - a total game-changer of a technique book. I read this while recovering from metatarsalgia. When I applied what I'd learned the next week, I set a mile PB - without really trying. Heart rate stayed at 140bpm, nasal breathing. I highly recommend the book.
This was a great list of tips! I already subscribe to several of them, and really believe in them! Watching running UA-camrs has taught me so much and it keeps me looking forward to my next run. And regarding your last tip, that aligns with my story. I found running 4 years ago, when my knees gave me so much trouble that I was barely able to stay consistent, but for some reason, I had still figured out that this was my sport. So for years I would tell everyone that "I'm a runner, I'm just injured". Even before I had gotten started with "serious training". It has only been in the last 9 months where I've been able to build, follow a plan, and go after speed & long distance goals. For anyone in a similar situation, don't be discouraged, you don't have to be good at something to begin with! Start with the goals of enjoyment and health, then you can build competitive goals on top of that.
Really great video man! I’m glad I found your channel a few months ago. I started my running journey in November of 2021 after donating my kidney to my son in June of 2021. I come from a fitness background, but running has really opened my mind to a whole new world of fitness and I’m also using as a tool to give back to families in need. I’m about to run my first half marathon on day may 7th and I couldn’t feel more ready. Sorry for the long comment, but wanted to show my appreciation for your videos💪💪
Nice clear and honest video bro 👌, i feel the dedication and positive runners vibe alltrough it. I recognize myself in it and started 3 years ago with the " you're a runner" lifestyle. Still enjoying it, feeling much healthier. Alcohol almost totally banned since then and don't miss it 😅. Did my 10th marathon @rotterdam this year and went sub 3 hours @age 44. Never tought 3 years ago that i actually could finish a marathon. Keep up the good vibes 🏃.
Awesome work, Wim! That’s incredible. And I bet you can go faster too!! I have a friend who is 55 and still getting faster 💪🏻🤟🏼 thanks for the kind words 😊
Love your channel & what you said about not giving up and identifying as a runner …esp after tearing 2nd & 3 rd metatarsals off of plantar plate in 2019. Taking it easier this time around , making sure to warm up and stretch BEFORE the run ….lesson learned .
I really enjoy your channel. Been running 3-4 years and whilst I know most of these things It was a nice reminder, especially after having a bad couple of weeks running trying to chase PB's etc
Thanks Joe 😊 that’s really kind and I’m glad the video has helped in some small way. As you say, keep at it. The bad times make the good times worth it 😊
Subscribed just now, like your presentations. I am an ex-tennis player and sometimes sprinter that much prefers speed to distance but am committed to becoming more of a versatile runner, including at least some distance. thanks.
Great habits to learn from. New to running- 5 months in, and really finding value and enjoyment in Messy Happy! I didn’t know the word for Runderlust but I definitely have it. I’ve got family in SE Asia and definitely looking forward to running next time I visit! Starting with Singapore parkrun! Thanks!!
Great video as per usual, very useful tips and love the positivity. My favorite running books are 'From last to first' by Charlie Spedding - very good for training the mind as well as the body. Also loved the Adharanand Finn books 'Running with the Kenyans' and 'Rise of the Ultra Runner'
2022 is the first year that I actually feel like a runner and what a difference that feeling makes. I always enjoyed running but would be into it for a couple months and over do it and then take off for a couple months and never saw any improvement (understandably). My goal this year was to run at least 3 times a week which was super attainable in the beginning and now I run about 4-5 days a week and I just started added in some zone 2 cycling cross training on the indoor trainer. I started this year off using the Garmin coach that’s built into my watch and did the 10k plan with the goal of just completing, so it was all easy runs to get back into the swing of things….again. I just finished a 5k plan to work on speed and got a 4min pr on my 5k! It’s nice just going out and being told what my run is for the day without having to think about it. One day I’ll get a coach but for now this works. Thank you Ben and Mary for your great videos!
Love your channel! Just found it the other day! I started running the end of March this year and did my first race (4 miles) on July 4th (9.25 minute miles). My second race is a 5k in October and I have another 4 mile in November. I'm aiming to do a 10k then a half marathon hopefully next year and the trident sand spur challenge and more after there! I have learned to love to run! I do crossfit too and love it. Again, your channel is great!
Brilliant content thank you! Love watching you and Mary - such a sweet couple 💑 great humour and running advice - so inspiring as a 45yrs old woman trying to get better at running and completely falling in love with the process! No book recommendations sorry but this has inspired me to read one! Thank you! Happy running everyone 🏃🏃🏃🏃😁
I know this is an old video, but I just wanted to provide the feedback that I'm happy you don't use the 'glitchy' sound effect for the graphics any more! It's very unsettling with headphones :D Thanks for all the high quality content!
One of the most useful video on running that I came through. Not sure why but I come through this video again and again and get inspired. Specially the last point defining yourself as a runner 🏃♂️
Loved these! Flora Beverley was the first UA-cam channel I subscribed to, and she's still one of my favorites. For books, I love the ones by Scott Jurek and one by Matt Long called The Long Run. I really need to find a relaxed local group that runs on trails, and finishes at a pub!
Thanks Ben, subscribed. I'm getting my health back up after losing the way during the pandemic (no more alcohol for me!) and am trying to show my ten year old daughter the joys of being a triathlete, still exercising rather than training with running but next year intend to do a few half marathons.
I can’t believe how many running youtube channels now. New to running, they got me thru a long non running injury recovery. I actually pulled out of a race due to not enough time to train, I know if I stayed with the race I would have pushed to hard to hit a goal that I set before not being away from running for 3 months.
@@ThisMessyHappy I am from the US and almost all the UA-cam running channels I watch are from the UK. I am thinking about a Vacation next year for a 10k and a park run over there.
Thanks, Ben! You are a very sound and down to earth human! Great content. Thanks to Mary as well 💪🏻 ”Journey for life”, is what I realized a few weeks back as well.
Im glad I found this channel :-) one of the better running channels :-) Thanks for all the hard motivating work you two do :-) Im the same age as your wife and run very similar. She inspires me, as do you though lol.
Another great, clear and constructive post. Thank you as always. I’m following most of your advice, including calling myself a runner… I thought I needed a 10km race at some specific pace, then a half sub 2 hours… now it’s a marathon… but, whatever, I love running, I don’t love every run, but I’m privileged to be able to run and the races are just things I do along with jogging along beautiful coastal routes in Sydney with friends… these are every bit as satisfying as my very modest PBs… more even. Thanks Ben, Mary and your bunch of MessHaps.
I've gone from a 3hr 45 marathon to not being able to run more than 2 miles in the space of 6 months 😤 Completely lost it and struggling with shin problems
Don’t give up. When you run, even when injured, you’re always a runner! You have a lifetime and sometimes there are setbacks. Look at it like a puzzle and see if you can solve it (with expert help of course). Good luck 😊
Wow, all great points but no.1 really struck me. I began running more regularly at the beginning of the year, about once or twice a week. Now training for my first half marathon (also my first ever race!) so I could have a "goal" for my running. But I'm still a little shy when people call me a runner, maybe because I can't confidently say that I'm super dedicated to running, or that running is the only exercise that I do (lifting in the gym is my primary and preferred choice of workout). But you're absolutely right, I should proudly identify as a runner.
So I'm near the end of a 8 week block of training for a 10k. Just wanted to say thanks for the useful advice. I've learnt a lot, particularly in terms of recovery, not just pushing through and ignoring any niggles. And the different types of run you can do too!!
I am engaging in this community! I was supposed to run a marathon right now but when I saw one of your videos and talked about taking time when recovering from Covid I decided not to! Thank you!
I started running 7 weeks ago to do a pack burro race 😅. The race came and went (I literally came in last), but somehow have not stopped running. I’ve thought my whole life that running is not for me, but here I am, 40y, running around (mostly at night when my kids are sleeping).
Thanks for the tips. I just completed my 10th half marathon (they were spread over perhaps 14 years tho). They don't get any easier and at the age of 54 my main obstacle is knee pain after running.
My additional 3 top cheats:
- do weight training
- do barefoot walking or running
- embrace the walk/hike and don’t feel embarrassed

Lauf Wigald Lauf is a great book of the german comedian Wigald Boning, who describes his experiences of doing a marathon every week for a whole year.

Ha ha thanks so much! The comment is always welcome no matter how long it takes to make it. It’s always very much appreciated and thank you for the recommendation as well! Sounds like an amazing book 🙌🏼😊
This channel has changed my life for the better. Shared some clips with others. Ty so much!
This sounds great! Thanks Ken. I’ve never heard of it so it’s a great tip 😊
Thank you so much for this video!
Don’t always feel like a runner but now I do!! 😁
Thank you! Very good advice (I used to run ALOT in my teens and twenties and now starting back to running in my early fifties: EEK!)
Thanks Maja and amazing work for sticking with it and identifying early 💪🏻😊
Really great video man! I’m glad I found your channel a few months ago. I started my running journey in November of 2021 after donating my kidney to my son in June of 2021. I come from a fitness background, but running has really opened my mind to a whole new world of fitness and I’m also using as a tool to give back to families in need. I’m about to run my first half marathon on day may 7th and I couldn’t feel more ready. Sorry for the long comment, but wanted to show my appreciation for your videos💪💪
Pretty amazing thing to do for your son. Go well on the half. Hope you enjoy it!
@@paulwilliams2814 🙏🙏💪💪
A lot of these points hit real today. I appreciate it.
Thanks Jacob 😊
The bad times make the good times worth it 😊
Love your channel ❤️! You & Mary feel like good friends, I look forward to hearing of your adventures. It makes me excited to 🏃♀️
Lisbon half marathon for me this weekend, I will be taking the GoPro to get something done for UA-cam it may not be brilliant but I will have a go
I have watched many of your videos and I love your channel. I am DEFINITELY subscribing 😁
Subscribed just now, like your presentations. I am an ex-tennis player and sometimes sprinter that much prefers speed to distance but am committed to becoming more of a versatile runner, including at least some distance. thanks.
Loved all the great messages and tips in today's content, cheers Ben!
So inspirational! Thanks Ben👍🏻
thank you foe adviceses. I started running in 20022 . On St Patrick this year i manage to run 15 km . Your channel is great keep it up!
Thanks!!
Great message! I appreciate what you provide here!
Like the video Ben,thank you. One of the best books I've read has to be "The Rise Of The Ultrarunners" by Adharanand Finn. Superb read.
Thanks mate you give me so motivation on running right now
Good advice Ben. You always keep me inspired with these little nuggets of information.
Great video as per usual, very useful tips and love the positivity. My favorite running books are 'From last to first' by Charlie Spedding - very good for training the mind as well as the body. Also loved the Adharanand Finn books 'Running with the Kenyans' and 'Rise of the Ultra Runner'
These are some amazing tips!! Thanks for sharing 😊
wow Thx a lot as always !! so inspiring channel !
Good for restarting also. Thank you.
I am engaging in this community. I am looking for my spark !
Yes Valerie! That’s awesome. You’ll get it for sure 😊
Thanks for the advice and ideas
Love your channel! Just found it the other day! I started running the end of March this year and did my first race (4 miles) on July 4th (9.25 minute miles). My second race is a 5k in October and I have another 4 mile in November. I'm aiming to do a 10k then a half marathon hopefully next year and the trident sand spur challenge and more after there! I have learned to love to run! I do crossfit too and love it. Again, your channel is great!
Good luck and have fun with the half marathon ...can't wait for the video of it 😁💪🏼
Love you guys! Another great video.
It's very unsettling with headphones :D
Thanks for all the high quality content!
I love this channel!
thanks Ben for the advice, love watching your vedios
Thanks Ben ! Very inspiring and informative video 👏👏👏
One of the most useful video on running that I came through. Not sure why but I come through this video again and again and get inspired. Specially the last point defining yourself as a runner 🏃♂️
Thabk you! So inspiring!!!!
Great tips , training now for my first Ragnar, can’t wait 🤙🏻
Good luck! Sounds awesome. And thanks 😊
Brill video, thanks for this!
Another great vlog Ben....I am engaging!
Ha ha thank you, Neil. You are engaging indeed 😊
Thanks dude. Love that and my takeaways are attach to the process, not the outcome and I am a runner!
Loved these! Flora Beverley was the first UA-cam channel I subscribed to, and she's still one of my favorites. For books, I love the ones by Scott Jurek and one by Matt Long called The Long Run. I really need to find a relaxed local group that runs on trails, and finishes at a pub!
Love Flora! And thanks for the book shouts outs. Love it 😊🤟🏼
Thanks Ben, subscribed. I'm getting my health back up after losing the way during the pandemic (no more alcohol for me!) and am trying to show my ten year old daughter the joys of being a triathlete, still exercising rather than training with running but next year intend to do a few half marathons.
Welcome to the madness, Bob! 😂 keep on the journey and what a wonderful example you’re setting for your daughter too 😊
@@ThisMessyHappy Something she can blame me for when she's older 😃
I can’t believe how many running youtube channels now. New to running, they got me thru a long non running injury recovery. I actually pulled out of a race due to not enough time to train, I know if I stayed with the race I would have pushed to hard to hit a goal that I set before not being away from running for 3 months.
Ha ha there are loads of us out there!! 😂 but welcome to the party 😊
@@ThisMessyHappy I am from the US and almost all the UA-cam running channels I watch are from the UK. I am thinking about a Vacation next year for a 10k and a park run over there.
Thanks, Ben! You are a very sound and down to earth human! Great content. Thanks to Mary as well 💪🏻
”Journey for life”, is what I realized a few weeks back as well.
Such a wonderful video!!!! Thank you :)
Content classic as always buddy, watching on my lazy day, body is wiped from life stuff, but tomorrow is my 800x600x400x200 session 😉
hi im a new Runner fron new Zealand. thanks for the tips .
cheers .
Thanks Aaron 😊
Love your ethos, we are all runners 🏃♀️ 😀 ❤
Thank You-great tips!
Great video, excellent points. Laughed out loud at the "vomit in a bin" line.
Ha ha taken straight from a mates experience 😂
This video is AMAZING
Failure is an option by Matt Whyman, excellent book.
Yes !
As late begginer tnx for d training
plans ~ ❤❤
So I'm near the end of a 8 week block of training for a 10k. Just wanted to say thanks for the useful advice. I've learnt a lot, particularly in terms of recovery, not just pushing through and ignoring any niggles. And the different types of run you can do too!!
So true
Great tips, even though I've been running for 3 years. And it was nice meeting you today in ChaAm. Hopefully will see you later in another run.
Great to meet you too, Sylvain! Hopefully see you at another race soon 😊
I am engaging in this community! I was supposed to run a marathon right now but when I saw one of your videos and talked about taking time when recovering from Covid I decided not to! Thank you!
Stryd has great journaling capabilities.
I started running 7 weeks ago to do a pack burro race 😅. The race came and went (I literally came in last), but somehow have not stopped running. I’ve thought my whole life that running is not for me, but here I am, 40y, running around (mostly at night when my kids are sleeping).
Yes 🙌 second all of these
Thanks for the tips. I just completed my 10th half marathon (they were spread over perhaps 14 years tho).
They don't get any easier and at the age of 54 my main obstacle is knee pain after running.
My favourite “running” book is Finding Ultra by Rich Roll
I am engaging in this community😁
And I am appreciating the engagement 😊🤟🏼
