Ralphie B is an alias of Dutch DJ and producer Ralph Barendse. He was born on April 6, 1977 in Zwijndrecht, a town based near the city of Rotterdam. In the year 1999 Ralph released his first record on Dutch label Deal Records.
During the years Ralph released tracks under project names such as "Alpha Breed", "Midway", "First State" and of course “Ralphie B”. Under that name he made a track called “Massive”, which became a big trance classic.
For Muzikxpress interview number 100, I got to sit down with Ralph in his studio, to ask him about the story behind “Massive”, his future plans and more! And... this is the very first time ever you will be able to see an interview with Ralph!
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

What is your favorite version of Ralphie B's "Massive"?
Mirco De Govia Mix. I like the slight Euphonic Records style touch he made.
DJ Energy Mix is just Massive

Also hope you can make some interviews about Alpha Breed and Midway tracks
@@svenkonradstordal6554 I did an interview about “Midway - Monkey Forest” as well, more about that later 😉
@@muzikxpress Yohooooooo 😎
Paul van Dyks Remix, which was sadly never released. It has fewer sounds, which I think fits the main lead better than the original which has sounds added that for me at least are a bit disturbing.
This is what a real trance producer looks like, not many others come close to what he achieved in the studio. Forget Tiesto, though his late 90s releases and dj sets were good, were mainly produced by someone else with a better technical ability and look what Tiesto ended up doing, creating pop for the US market with questionable artists just to cash in on his brand. Respect to Ralph that he only puts out music when he is inspired to do so, unlike the avalanche of turds churned out by other producers just for the sake of it.
Say what you say about Tiesto. He’s what brought dance music to the States in the late ‘90’s early 2000’s. I can never bad mouth the man, neither should you.
The guys at Black Hole who said no to sign it the first time, must’ve felt like shit when Tiësto said “ch00n” 😂
Haha yeah, oops ;-) I mean.... Massive oops :P ;-)
yeah...i think this has happened many times...when a dj star, a founder of the label may really like a track which has been rejected by someone from A&R.
A lot of A&R men must have been deaf, how could you listen to massive and think it wasn't stunning.
I'm surprised he is as soft spoken as he is. I am pleasantly surprised. His tracks are very complex and are their own style of genre in themselves. Monkey Forest is an example. His Midway remix of Solarcoaster is one of the best tracks ever, legendary guy thanks for the interview Twan!
Love that Solarcoaster remix and These Silent Hearts as well.
Brilliant interview! I love how humble Ralph is, such a talented producer with great story. I'm definitely looking forwards to hearing his new stuff :D
Thanks so much! And Ralph is a great and humble and very talented guy for sure!
Wow such a nice guy, love almost all of his productions. The new one is also top class :)
Legend! Just as humble as I imagined!
Pvd politics of Dancing is where i discovered massive
What a great compilation that was right? :)
Me to. First time I heard this track on politics of dancing. Back then I thought it’s a original, but it was Pvd rework with better bass lines. Still today the pvd rework is the best version in my opinion. The original little bit lack of power, still it’s a great tune
Exactly 😄👍 A really Great Compilation 🎼
Oh my as you promised, and whoa... it's Ralphie B! Looking forwards to this one :D
Massive! and yes that is also the name of the track that stirs up all the trance goodness in me (a fitting name for what it is)
Totally agree with Ralph about not changing tracks once they are done. Good on him!
Always baffles me how the producers are so humble about their works. Another great interview, Twan. I think with Ralph you can't really pick a favourite as his productions are so tight, and so much qualty always 🙂
The first TOTW ever on ASOT! 🖤
Such a humble legend.
One of the greatest Trance tracks of all time, still get goosebumps EVERY time I hear samples or the whole track.
Legend !
Perfect guest for the 100th episode!!! Congrats and huge thanks both!
Thank you very much!!! :)
Seems to be a very down to earth fellow. That second track in the background, is it the new release? It's one of the best melodies I've heard in trance for a long time.
Yes, the second track in the background is the new Ralphie B track "Terra Prime" indeed, amazing track! :)
Humble nice person 👍
1 of my favourites from back in the day.absolute class.
Thank you, Tvan, for another interesting video. As always very informative. I look forward to every episode.
Just not so long ago I bought vinyl from Data Records "Ralphie B - Massive "
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the interview with Ralph!
@@muzikxpress Of course. A very interesting interview about one of my favorite tracks
How many cd's behind him? I would spend ages looking through those 👍😁great interview 😊🎧
Great interview. Love his casual approach, really grounded. My fave Ralphie B tune also happens to be Icarus :)
First heard it in tiesto's live set from 2001..what time those were God
11:14 that's actually shocking, considering PvD's edit absolutely smashes
Thank you!
I really love first state - first state. B-side is even better (Sacred)
Great Track! (One of my favourites!). Thanks Ralph for a 'Massive' Tune! And Twan for another fantastic interview.
Does anyone know the exact date Massive / Disclosure was released? Discogs only has November, 2001.
Thanks for this Twan!!!! One of my favourites producers ever, together with Jack Molenschot (Freejack) :) I hope to make you an interview to him too, will be amazing. Alpha Breed - Beyond The Moon is one of my favourites tunes on my Top 10. And Massive too, from Ralphie B alias, specially the Original, unbeatable :D
Thanks so much! And who knows, fingers crossed 😉
There much be something in the water in the Netherlands. Tiesto, Hardwell, Ferry…list goes on and on.
It is a dream of mine to have made something that no one wanted...then somehow it got to Tiesto...he friggin loved and and hammered it...then it got legit appreciation like that. Hearing him in his epic (esp early) trance era play my track and seeing the crowd go mad...shivers just thinking about what that would have been like. Such an amazing exciting and super creative era. So glad i was into buying vinyl over here in AUS...but seriously missed out what you guys in it all had :)
Love your videos...history recorded :)
G r e a t ! this man is so talented............................................
Love him Midway version on a motorcycle, drop a gear.. fuegggooo
I got the same speakers KRK VXT 6 which are pretty good for Trance 😉👌
Congrats on the 100th interview Twam. Been here since the beginning and the channel has grown so much. You always deliver top quality content and stories regarding some of my all time favourite classics and heres to another 100 episodes.
A good interview, Twan. I enjoyed it. One could always expect quality releases from Ralph. Massive is a huge classic, and a timeless tune. Ralph did a great job with it. I love it. 😍🙌🏽
My favorite tracks are
Ralphie B - Massive (original), Midway - Cobra,
Midway - Inca,
Midway - What If,
First State - First State,
First State - Sacred
Favorite remixes:
Tastexperience - Highlander (Ralphie B Massive Mix)
Dario G - Heaven Is Closer (Ralphie B Vocal Edit)
Insigma - Avalon (Midway Remix)
Solarstone - Solarcoaster (Midway Remix)
Twan, your stuff is fantastic. Have you ever considered interviewing an Irish DJ/Producer?
Thanks a lot! :) And yes, but as long as we're having no gigs / events it is gonna be a bit difficult ;-) So hopefully in the future, I have a few people on the wish list. Fingers crossed!
Woohhhooo 🥳🎉
Let’s hope you will reach 1000 episode. 🙂
Thank you, I hope so too!!
Massive Track! Reminds me of the good old days, trip down to memory lane.
I discovered "Massive" from Tiesto's sets of course. Tiesto even included this track in his radio show "Tiesto's Club Life" in chapter "Tiesto's Classics" somewhere in 2007. So, even in 2007 "Massive" was such popular track, so that it was considered as Trance classics.
Awesome interview dude. And Massive, what a tune. One of my all time favourite tracks. Yes! I remember buying the Politics of Dancing album and falling in love with this track then! Love your work!
Glad you enjoyed the interview, thank you!
I'm disappointed by the interview. I hoped Ralph would elaborate more on the pineapple on pizza.
Haha! :P
Amazing interview! Just for the record, my favorite tune of all times is sierra nevada, so Ralph if you read this, thanks for be part of First State and create amazing trance tunes 😎
Wow! Thank you very much! I 've been always wondering about the story behind this track, but couldn't find any information!
You are welcome! This is his first ever video interview BTW 😉
Super track, I love it, awesome interview
Nice chap. I can't believe Blackhole Recordings didn't want it at first. The people who rejected it must have been on a downer mood or something at the time? A great piece of music can sound different when something crap happens in ya life. Anyway. At least they admitted thier mistake. Also yeah the Fillterheaz at that time had been putting out trance progressive remix classics one after another again and again and again. Their style has changed to something that is totally different today from what it was but back then I would usually listen to there version on vinyl first before making a purchase at HMV or a local smaller record shop. (Nes Manga)
There’s quite a lot of tracks that for rejected at first or no label was interested in signing it, crazy right?? BTW, if you like the Filterheadz…. I recently reached out to them for an interview…. 🤞🏻😉
Congratulations on your 100Th interview Twan. I am really glad you do this as a hobby. This was the time when In Trance We Trust was really strong. I wanted every record available. Ralphie B is on my top classics of all time.
That 12 inch back there midway amazon is one of the best trance tracks ever!!!
As humble and down to Earth as they come what a foookin legend... epic! Love u and love him... peace and love!
as long as time is hear this tune will always be part of life, one of the best of all time
i heard it many times on Judge Jules radio 1 Show
Thanks for the interview.
"Massive" is a great track. Still listening it with loads of pleasure.
Thanks Twan. Great interview as always. Such a nice humble guy. Massive is cool track but my favorite of his is Alpha Breed Alien Arrival. Very tallented producer
🔥💪👌👏
I remember this man, he is probably one of the trance producers ever he's music was and still is regarded as timeless.
First time I heard ‘Massive’ was PvD live at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield in ‘01. It’s such a great and unique title for a track.
Also didn’t realise until today that Ralph is Midway-his remix of Solarcoaster is epic! 🔥
What a top man and humble guy-incredibly talented producer!
P.S. Good job Tiesto on getting it signed in the end! And also great job Twan on the interview!
This is going to be MASSIVE!. I purchased Massive as soon as it was release on Juno in 2001. Classic ITWT.
fijne video man! wat een heerlijke track was dat destijds!
Dank je Erik!
wow amaginz... pure legend... memories!
Such a legendary track. ❤
Love how humble he is... Dude! You're a genius!
Love these interviews Twan. Keep them coming! What a tune this was (and still is)!
Thanks so much Daniel!
What a trance builder track name at 13:50 ⁉
That’s the brand new Ralphie B track “Terra Prime”!
Love this song!
Massive, Inca, Amazon and Monkey Forest are for me all time foundational songs.
and Solarcoaster remix of course.
Thanks for this interview. I waited for it for a long time. But I missed questions for the Bootleg Version of Airbase which was called "Massive Rise" which is my personal Trance favorite of all time.
Thank you! And I don't really know what kind of interesting things I should ask about a bootleg version that wasn't even made by Ralph himself. It wouldn't really add much to the interview in my opinion :) I could ask him what he thinks of it and he will most likely say "great bootleg" and that's it ;-)
@@muzikxpress Thanx for your answer. I would be interested, if this version of Massive Rise was authorized by Ralphie or not. If he authorized it, did he worked with Airbase on it. Otherwise I like to know, did he chose the juristcal way to delete the Bootleg.
@@Trackcheck the word “bootleg” says enough already 😉 It never got released, since it was an unofficial remix / mash up. I remember it was on Ralph’s old website as a download but it never got an official release.
@@muzikxpress I think you're right. Maybe you can do a new Episode with Jasper Söderlund (Airbase). He has done several iconic tracks in the past too that are interesting for your episodes and maybe he also can tell his story of "Massive Rise". Best regards, Chris.
@@Trackcheck he’s on the (looooong)!wish! But since this is “just” a hobby for me, I don’t really have a travel budget. Advertising revenue isn’t much if you don’t have millions of views. And as long as there are no events due to the pandemic, I can only do interviews with people based here (in The Netherlands). So hopefully I can do an interview with Jezper (not Jasper 😉) whenever he has a gig again here in The Netherlands. I doubt that will be anytime soon though. We spoke about it already BTW (we know each other for many years!) and he’s up for it. So, fingers crossed!
EDIT: I only do interviews about originals. So not about remixes / bootlegs etc. I want as much people as possible to see these vlogs, so I always focus on famous hits and big classics.
Love his music from the old days, very complex and deep sounding tracks.
Loved it, his new track is awesome, can't wait to hear the followup.
Did Ronski make Mirco’s tunes?
No, but he was involved with this remix (check the credits on the record) for "Massive".
5:32 Wild. My school teacher had that same DJ Jean CD and i remember loving that track from Ralph too :)
I enjoyed midway- what if. I still wonder what the lady is saying in the beginning.
"Daunt from my hidden feelings,
But never hesitated to face,
Its like a rapture that turns my world goes round,
Why is this happening to me?..."
Its a poem of my lovely wife and its her voice too😄. Cheers!
@@TheRalphieB awesome 👌 thanks for getting back.
So my question is. Why is the melody so emotional? The drop is unique. Never heard that kind ever.
what a nice guy so down to earth.. and a classic tune
Ralph, never stop being Ralph! Please 😉
So did you expect massive to become so errrrr...... massive?
Badumsch :P
great legend. great work twan
Congrats looking for 1000 episode
Me encanta este canal, pero necesito una entrevista con Kyau & Albert, sería lo máximo.❤️
Here you go 😉
ua-cam.com/video/mERco4KPSVs/v-deo.html
such a nice guy
One of the most talented dutch trance producers. His Ralphie B track needed an interview, but also those Midway and, for my taste, these amazing Alpha breed tracks need it too in the future. Even that Cryo culture release was a bomb. Beyond the moon was the second record I bought then.
Amazing producer for sure, so a good one for my 100th interview 😉 And I did an interview with him as well about “Midway - Monkey Forest” in case you missed it. Hope you enjoy it!
Ralphie B massive is in the top 10 all time
In the background, are all those cds? Trance cds?
The ones in the intro / outro are all CDs indeed. All kinds of genres, from 80's / 90's to rock, pop, Eurodance, trance, house, techno, downtempo and even soul and jazz. I love all kinds of music, not just dance related things :)
@@muzikxpress i still have my trance cds from 2000 all the way up to around 2008 when i stop buying cds. I think about 300 some are rare compilations that were so hard to find back in the days. Thats why i asked
Great interview, Twan!
Thank you very much!!
One of the greatest trance tunes of all times and it’s cool to see that ralph is also a Star Wars fan
Alpha Breed - epic future!
Dikke klessik
Wooowooow! Cant wait to watch!
What tracks are used in the background?
Ralphie B - Massive
Ralphie B - Terra Prima
Fantastic track I remember hearing van dyk drop this in cream Liverpool for the first time it blew the roof off the place
