- I asked my Australian friend Steve about the pros and cons of living in Singapore. He started his company in Melbourne 14 years ago, but then Steve decided to move his business and himself to Singapore. I took him for a walk to find out what’s a better place to live and do business - Australia or Singapore. Enjoy!

What an amicable person Steve is and I gather he has very high EQ. Very admirable.
I travel 40 countries, still prefer singapore, everythings within reach, foods from everywhere...😅😘👍
I love Australia and have been there 10 times for holidays. Steve bought up a good point about aging and amenities within reach. Never think of it that way. You have a great guest this week who's been around. Love his openness to different culture
Holiday and as resident is totally different.

Its true for Australian, there are so much Australian made food here in SG... even COLES brands of food stuffs are available in NTUC supermarkets
Everything’s within reach and online delivery is also fast travel distance is within short distance be it Malls or hawker centre or to any place , from end to end it just 1:20 hr from it and best u can drink from the tap water anywhere

When I was younger, I wanted to move to Australia for more space, the great outdoors, temperate climate, cheaper cars and housing. In my 60s, I’ve realised that living in SG offers the greatest convenience of all. Everything works here, we enjoy the fruits of good governance ie a safe, peaceful and orderly environment, easy access to world class healthcare, education, relatively affordable housing, diverse delicious affordable food, infrastructure and transportation etc. Airhub SG is well-connected which makes traveling anywhere more convenient. If I feel like cool weather, I can fly to Japan/Korea in December, Australia/NZ in July; if I want a beach vacation, I can fly to Phuket/Bali; etc. So many interesting destinations within a 5-6 hour flight radius. As I age, and need assistance, I can also hire live-in help to enable me to age in place. Few other places in the world can compete with SG on all these plus points.

Income inequality does bring cheap labour and makes things like nursing help or restaurants more affordable for those with more wealth.
I've seen the extreme of this in South Africa... So I'd caution against the issues inequality creates. It's much better to be surrounded by people who all have a decent lifestyle.
@@hannesRSA Income inequality is a problem in many countries. But at least in SG, we are blessed to have a government that cares and works for the people, so we have about 90% of Singaporeans owning their own homes and 80% living in highly subsidised high quality public housing, universal healthcare, and hardly any beggars or homeless people on the streets.
@@anchored555 that's good to hear.. I don't know the SG housing system. I mean it seems a bit restrictive not being able to buy large property where you want.. but it seems governance is doing the best with what is available.
It really isn't pleasant living with people who are struggling even if you are rich yourself.. e.g. in places like Qatar and Dubai where it's pretty much introduced race-based class labour.
Singapore is indeed a good place to live if you have no mortgage nor owns a car. You will need to have sufficient to retire or be able to still generate income for retirement. When you dont have sufficient fund to live, medical bills or just to get by, convenience and safety will be secondary.
So true. I bought something at the Sydney Opera House with a AUD50 note. The cashier commented really freely something about how I did not have small change and very few people pass her a $50 note like this. I was taken aback as the people working in Singapore hold back a lot more.

Create some kind of banter, it’s fun.
As a businessman you can’t really say something that hurts your business i get that. Its good if you got PR( which is heavily baised on nationality and ethnicity) otherwise you don’t feel settled when you start to have a family. Singaporeans are friendly to westerners or to those they have vested interests in. Their attitude changes like weather in melbourne when they come in contact with someone from a developing nation, it will feel like they are doing a favour to you by even talking to you. There is a racism problem when you have to find a rental house and The public school have racism issue too. You won’t find them otherwise calling someone at home for whisky lol, that is to show off how open they are. You start to see reality after honeymoon period is over living their 3-5 yrs
I've been ordering every little thing to get delivered here in Brisbane mate.. it's just the world changing. Actually Australian labour is more expensive so you can expect more of this here.

Do you know if Steve at the time had a family/kids and is considering or already is paying for schooling for the kids? Singapore does look enticing but I see that schooling costs might be a huge barrier.
Whenever I travel from Jurong to Changi, Its feels so far. So I doubt I will like a bigger space.
Yeh we spoiled here:) When I lived in Moscow 1-2 hours one way commute was normal

Both Singapore and Australia are great place to live. I lived and worked at SG from 2004-2014 then at the same year (2014) move to Oz. Up until now 2024 i still miss the FOOD and life in Singapore. Older generations of Singaporean will become your immediate relatives ( call then Uncle and Auntie) Lol. But as Steve said the pros and cons living in SG, a lot of those cons made me to decide to move to Oz. Its the best decision I've ever made. I could not get a six figure salary per year in SG and live a little bit comfortably. Yes SG is an expensive place to live in but men hands down SG is one of the best place to live.

Just in case you don't know, Roland is being laid off.
In Spore, the range of groceries, frozen goods, fruits and vegetables is huge because we get them from all over the world all year round
Whereas in Australia, what is available is usually whats in season. Prices arent too different from here either. Eg... Broccoli and mangoes... It's pretty similarly priced.
Eating out in Australia is very expensive so it makes sense to cook.
I spend 6mths out of a year there. Both are great places to live and I enjoy the contrast each country offers.

Wrong - there is a big proce difference. I just got back from AUS $1.50 mango in SG $6-7, Strawberries $2.50 SG $8-15
@@adriansicrea484 it really depends on the season too. U can compare mangoes like Calyso, R2E2 n Tppi.... They are priced quite close to selling price here at Ntuc. Broccoli can go for around $9 per kg in Sydney and Cauliflowers are expensive costing $7 for 1. Good strawberres, blueberries, mulberries... They really aren't that cheap in sydney or here. There are of cos good buys or sales every now and then at the supermarts like woolworths, coles or Aldis. In fact, Calyso mangoes on sale at Aldi cost only $1.50 but not all the time.
Register a business take a day not weeks or mths

I was hoping that you have more non-'rich' guests. It would be more relatable to the bigger group of people who wants to come here.
I am singaporean, lah is weird. I might use it when I am not aware.
Singapore situation not so good for mid level expats !!! Rental has been sky rocketing recently and to add on GST is increasing to 8%
For example: you earn 5K easily pay 2000 for renting a master bedroom and if you are renting a whole house - min 3600 !!! What’s left in hand doesn’t worth it !!!
Yeh, rent prices are crazy at the moment! Hopefully it will go back again
That's a bit much, though I'm renting out a house an hour outside the CBD in Brisbane for SGD 2500.. guess it's cheaper.

For holidays,I love it there especially Perth.
For long term，maybe no because I'm use to easy accessibility here in terms of groceries or food.

We just came back from a family holiday (wife & 3 kids: 17; 15 & 11) in Singapore. It was great and we loved it and would all happily go back. I should mention it was my first time back in nearly 27 years. I moved to Singapore and lived there for a short time upon graduating from University back in 1996. A part of me wishes I had stayed longer back then, although now I'm interested in exploring how I could combine my work/business for both Perth and Singapore?? Thanks for the videos, keep them coming.

Pleasant interview! Just an observation: around min 3, Steve talks about meeting a friend in the bar & going back for a drink...and finding it quite common in SG but not elsewhere? Really not true--that experience is very rare in SG but extremely common in the US.
How is Singaporean friendly? I am a Singaporean
I would not choose to live or retire in Australia because it's way to expensive, way too slow or efficient in terms of service and way too slow compared to Asia
But AUSTRALIA IS HIS MOTHERLAND
So maybe after retired 62-64yo, he might like comeback to his homeland, where he can explose space & natures.
each ppl have different taste & choice. maybe someome at eldery all the need is something calm, space & countryside lifestyle.
but some will chose to big cities - where everything can reach out aa fast & easy as possible. they dont need much space, all they need is everything is clean & safety & reachable enough is more impotlrtant.
BTW, i argee Singaporean & many ASIAN have everything eldery need for. close environment, all

Peace and quiet with a civilised pace are part of first world living standards. Hence Australia’s multiple “Worlds most liveable Cities” rankings year after year.
Singapore is just another typical crowded, noisy and abnormally expensive Asian place most Westerners wouldn’t consider living in permanently..
Australia also offers a far more racially diverse society than Singapore too, which attracts people from every corner of the world especially Asia!
There are more Singaporeans who want to move to Australia than there are Australians who want to move to Singapore. In terms of percentage.

😂 Yes, after living in Melbourne for 4 years, I can't wait to go back Singapore! But I also know alot of Singaporeans who love it here in Oz. I think it depends on what you want in life. Work life balance, big house, having a car, less stressful lives, are all fantastic. But I miss the convenience, safety and efficiency of Singapore (apart from food of cos). I also feel like I can save more in Singapore. Much less tax, option of eating out cheaply, cheap public transport, the wide variety of cuisines done to very good standards, easy travel to most parts of the world. Imagine u need to fly 5hrs to Bali from Melbourne, instead of 2hrs from Singapore. End of day, I find Singapore more suitable for my lifestyle.
Australia can be appealing to retired North Americans, Europeans or Canadians
In retirement Singapore looks better for those from ANZ who want to be in a safer Asian country ? but what about affordability? compared to AUS + No pension and also for those who want to migrate to SG after 50 .. there is no PR system! so desirable destination but difficult to settle !
I’m not Singapore & I know country have strict laws on IMMIGRANTS BECAUSE THEYRE TINY SMALLEST COUNTRY, so they’re not easy give immigrants!!

I know 2 Youngful Vietnamese couple, they’re high skill workers (I think one working in banks, another one is IT or doctors) and they’re waiting for PR 10y & get apply already.
So I don’t get why some ppl saying they’re live there 30-40y but cant get PR??

This guy is stating his observations. I don't think he bashed his own country. And as a foreigner living in another country, like my current situation, I won't bash the country I'm living in too. You need to be able to see the beauty of another country in order to live there happily. I think this is what this guy is doing. If you can't see differences as beauty, then you will be unhappy most of the time. Then, well, time to plan to move away.
