- Terry Hall Hall
Richard has finally won a TV quiz show and I am afraid he will never stop talking about it again, but he’s nervous as Hell because one of his heroes is on the podcast and he’s sure he’ll screw it up, it’s ex-Fun Boy Three-er Terry Hall.
They discuss the dynamics and disagreements that come with collaboration, the nostalgic sexual time waves of early 1980s fashion, the one occasion when Terry laughed, being mistaken for a ventriloquist by the taxman, why the greatest album of all time only made it to 95 in the charts and why Terry didn’t end up as a hairdresser.
There’s some serious chat about sexual abuse and depression and how Terry had dealt with these traumas and some cruel assessments of the town of Coventry. And can the power of RHLSTP finally get the album Home to number 1 where it belongs? No, I don’t think so. It doesn’t seem to be commercially available.

RIP Terry Hall.He will always be remembered.
This was a brilliant interview, RIP Terry. What a lovely guy.
I wandered on to this about a week ago and now he's left us. He was an integral part of my generation - will be sadly missed.
It’s good that he did this interview. Herring gets him relaxed and being himself. I like Terrys honesty something lacking in most contemporary public figures.
It’s impossible to not love Terry. He’s my hero. Love.
This was a lovely interview he had such a dry humour. Such a sad loss. RIP
Terry was a hero. Devastated he's gone, but this interview was a treasure.
After hearing Terry a few times I kind of knew he has never took himself too seriously despite looking like a very disappointed Jack Dee. But this interview is a complete revelation. Great bloke.
It's turned in to sad 😔 Christmas Terry hall will never be forgotten 👍
Wow, I had no idea what a wonderful and funny person Terry Hall is! This is great. Such an interesting, courageous and genuinely fascinating individual.
Love this interview, I watch it a lot. RIP Terry.
Terry Hall - Lovely to see Terry at ease at this stage of his life x So very funny x RIP fella xx
I once literally bumped into Terry in Covent Garden. Had a quick chat while he was waiting for a pal of his. Charming fella, had a chat about football. Big United fan. Wish him well 👍
This is a side to Terry I have never seen, What a brilliant interview, no bullshit, just having a good old fashioned laugh, So ...Terry has a sense of humour, I stand corrected, Thanks for sharing !!
just shows ,,,meet them and decide
Why you didn’t fall for the act did you lad, he’s an artist and a performer, what did you want him to be all cheesy smiley like steps lol
I agree, Home is a great album. Loved this interview, RIP Terry.
This is a criminally under-viewed/under-subscribed channel.
Especially as it's consistently one of the best podcasts out there.
I'm not going to tell anyone though - it's my little secret
Adam Buxton is another great podcast.
Loved this on release, love this today, lucky to have this.
The Specials 1st album was my very first purchase with my own money, will always be a special record to me, RIP Terry, one of the true greats of songwriting ❤ Great interview Richard 🤟
had to rewatch this after the heartbreaking news i woke up to.. ❤
Terry was a beautiful human being and so witty x
Coming back to watch this again after the sad news of Terry Hall's death. RIP
Good to see you get Terry Hall back on so quickly!
So sad watching this again now i saw The Specials years ago in Liverpool so glad i got to see them in their Prime
This was great,I didn't know what a great sense of humour Terry had..a brilliant guest!
Terry Hall is a genius in my books. Had no idea about his abuse, but I knew he suffered depression. Great interview, and the Specials are still my fave ska band after 40 years.
RIP to Terry Hall another legend gone to soon.
He was already talking about it 40 years ago so you obviously weren`t much of a fan.
@MJ H idiot. Not obvious it was him in Well FT
What a genuinely awesomely great bloke.
Another legend gone too soon
The king of ska greatly loved and missed ❤ xx
Great interview. Saw Terry walking in Islington this afternoon!
Great interview! Farewell to an amazing singer song writer. The world has lost a gem ) :
Thanks for the music Terry ❤, good to see his chuckle muscles here. I have just seen from another interview he did: those criminals were not prosecuted.
If you liked this, Craig Kelly did a phone pod cast with Terry and it was just, it was so special. He’s such a lovely man x
Thanks. I'll check it out.
Home is a brilliant album and the one after Laugh. Both are criminally underated....if you find copies of them I would highly recommend you buy them. Might even be on UA-cam.
Love him, seeing The Specials in Margate soon and yes, Sense is a superb song!
I could listen to terry all day long.
What a great bloke, RIP Terry
What a great talent. Rest in peace, Terry.
Amazing episode, poor Terry Hall, very brave, I hope it helps to get it out, terrible news, look forward to new music Terry do another solo album!. Rich is right, Home is an amazing album (not on Spotify or iTunes) and one of my all time favourites too.
Will definitely check out the album. This is a really genuine interview. Fair play 🙌🏿
I really want to hear more of him and Jerry’s thoughts on each other and what their relationship was and like before and after
RIP terry. what a legacy
Amazing interview. Makes you wonder why they don't do this long form style of interview on television.
I confess to never having been a music buff, so the only songs of Terry's I'm familiar with are his big hits, but he comes across here as a genuine example of that Limmy tweet. I'm sorry he has gone before comedy made use of his talents. At least he leaves us with the best one-line answer to an Emergency Question ever. RIP
Aw he was nervous, bless him. What a lovely bloke.
I loved the specials (and the it ain't what ya do cover,) and Terry Hall is real fun here. Good stuff Mr. Herring.
R.I.P Terry Hall i'm so shocked this has really upset me
Same here. I know if I let myself go I'll well up.
@@PrAnG2000 i was in floods watching this episode back! Terry just seemed like the nicest guy you could meet and he had been through a lot
Watching this now, such a funny show, Terry Hall was a guy, that was really humorous by being quite straight with it!! Great show and R.I.P Terry Hall 😔
Rest in peace man , sincere condolences to his family and band members😢
Being a fan of Terry since my teens in the 80s, to hear him talk about his childhood for the first time, makes the terrible news even more heartbreaking. Good though, to see him laughing in this interview sometimes!
What a brave, talented and inspiring guy, Terry Hall --> Legend 🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤
I just bought Terry Hall's "Home" on eBay with the last fiver I have until payday next Tuesday. And it's on cassette so I will also have to buy a cassette player. It better be good!
It is!! Dont you think!? 👌👌👌
I thoroughly enjoyed this interview.
Top 10 RHLSTP candidate. Genuinely one of his best interviews. Richard gets people talking about deep things so easily.
Terry Hall....my absolute hero in Los Amigos High School 1983 my graduation year, Fountain Valley California, Orange County CA Oh by the way Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State graduated 1982 from Los Amigos HS FV CA
....with Ray Barry and Dave Osborne.. Love you Dave!
I think I figured out Terry’s humor. TH truth is funnier than any thing that can be made up.
A great guest, Terry needs the long format interview/conversation. 10 mins on the One Show won't cut it. More diverse guests like this please.
Terry I just discovered you in 2023. My grandson loves you. Rudy…
Rest in peace Terry, way too young.
40:22 spinal tap reference went unnoticed 😁
Terry Hall Legend RIP ❤
What a nice guy.
Look up a Compilation album called Sent from Coventry Terry's first band The Squad are on it
Terry Hall is one of the all time greats of new wave. .. one of the few I can still listen to
Awfully sad. Rest in Peace Terry.
Am I in quantum leap or did I watch this already???? Heeeeeelllpppp....... RHLSTP
RIP Terry Hall and Rest in Alive Rich! This was a great Episode i saw The Specials years ago in Liverpool
Hard to believe young Terry Hall has just passed away ... Dec 2022
RIP. Gone much much too young. So sad.
All the best, Terry. 😐
This interview broke my heart! :(
A brilliant interviewee. RIP Terry.
RIP Terry, Love Love Love Rip
New sub. Just put a song on my FP. Specials and someone ask me if I knew of Terry’s history? I didn’t so looked as I’m a fighter of children and managed with help from Esther to change a law to make certain provisions for children in court being made legal now.
love you really loved and love you.
rip
from Samantha
great interview
RIP Terry. Gutted.
definitely have more musicians on, man you were clearly nervous though!!
R.I.P.
Terry Hall!.......not that miserable prick from The Specials!.....no there must be a comic called Terry Hall........wow! It was THAT Terry Hall and what a lovely, witty bloke he is! 40 years of unqualified prejudice smashed ! Thanks Richard
Terry's one of my heroes, I was too young to see them in their heyday, but saw them at Brixton Academy on Terry's 50th Birthday, it was emotional.
sad to watch this now
An elephant materializes in the room around 22:00, Richard carefully circles around it and then manages to move it enough to the side to sit on the third chair in the conversation as if it was supposed to sit there right from the start.
I think, as a comedian, it was a bit beyond the scope of Richard’s idea of an entertaining interview. It could have gone horribly wrong but I think Terry put it out there for Richard to bring humour to the subject. I could be way off but I felt for them both when it was mentioned. Obviously, Terry was the one who suffered and his bravery even mentioning his experiences is fantastic.
At 27:30 onwards Terry Hall explains the Fun Boy Three live on TV gig they did and why they burnt the US flag during a cover of 'The End' by The Doors (an excellent cover version too)....here's the full video of them doing The End including the US flag burning......
(Hawkwind from about 1977 onwards were doing similar live protests against the horrendous foreign policies of the US government and it's destruction of countries and democracies around the world...with Hawkwaind it started with their amazing song against the US and they corrupt coropartions they represented , with the song 'Uncle Sams On Mars' ..which they also had a floow up when played live called the 'Martian Disco Stomp' whereby the US flag was produced on stage and then lead singer Nik Turner would wipe his arse with the US flag as a protest against what the US government / corporations were doing to people and the environment all over the world.......(i'll add in a further link below to show footage from 1984 wherby Hawkwind do this) ..............ua-cam.com/video/4efqwY_BI6c/v-deo.html
Here's Hawkwind live in 1984 with their own protest against 'US foreign policy and the corrupt corporations they were (and still are) destroying democracy , the environment and people's lives with , all over the world.....Unfortunately Hawkwind other main lead singer who wrote Uncle Sams On Mars , Robert Calvert had left the band a few years before this , although he did still join them randomly for live gigs like Stonehenge on and off................See the end part of this for their protest using the US flag...............ua-cam.com/video/KL-H73kT--M/v-deo.html
i was once a carpet fitter, and working around the london area, and like terry ive done everything in the way of jobs , demolition, cleaning out cesspits, bread factory , done everything , It wasnt until i had left his house that i had just carpeted one of the rooms, i then found out that he lived there , how sad as ive always been a musician , He comes across as a very approachable man , you could chat all night with him, Very dry wit, anyway all the best Terry , Tim
Which bit did the lawyers not approve of in the last upload of this?
FYI, I downloaded the older version before it got deleted and it's exactly the same. No cuts or bleeps.
I thought Laugh was a better album than Home. You're right, he should do stand up as he was hilarious and that is the most I've ever seen him smile. He kept hiding it behind his microphone.
I love Richard Herring he is like a strangely attractive creepy University professor
I thought this was going to be like Joachim Phoenix interview, but really surprised how funny Terry Hall is here
Terry Hall, RIP
Listening to this following Terry's death really poignant
Perhaps it would be more popular if Herring shut his gob and let the person being interviewed talk? We don't care what Herring thinks or about his biography/history, we are watching to find out about Terry!!
Correct about one thing Richard the album Home by Terry is brilliant
love you terry
For youngsters, this is just three of the songs the genius Terry has made
Our Lips Are Sealed - ua-cam.com/video/lFimGP5kgmc/v-deo.html Much Too Young - ua-cam.com/video/rdu8VOWk3pg/v-deo.html And co-wrote this one of the top 100 pop songs of all time ua-cam.com/video/r3kQlzOi27M/v-deo.html
Que triste que Terry falleció sin haberse reconciliado con Jerry Dammers y que eso fue perturbador para él 😢
As an 11 year old in '81, I regulary attended school, with my 2 mates, dressed in Stay Press, Fred Perry, braces and boots,
Because we had just seen Ghost Town on TOTP
RIP, Rudy.
The cool dudes listened to The Specials! Madness? Bah! ;-)
Where's Lenny The Lion?... Hoho, sad day, Rest In Peace Terry Hall
RIP Terry
They mentioned cancer and dieing that was hard to listen to 😔 Terry hall will never be forgotten 👍
RIP Terry ❤
I'm confused, Richard has repeatedly said that he's never really been interested in music.
Ah these comedians, they really mess with your head.
I'm sure he likes some music, like Terry Hall's for example. I guess his point always was that he's always been a comedy nerd first and foremost and all the other 'arts' were secondary to him, music included.
Maybe he got sick of Stew banging on about Jazz/folk and decided to reject the idea of music as a legitimate art form.
When you re-upload and lose all those views the original video had, how does that, if at all, affect monetisation income?
We're not doing anything to monetize the videos. In fact all the money we raise goes to making them. It's a stupid business model, but that's what makes us so adorable.
Brilliant.
Just spent another enjoyable hour watching this again.
Back again after the sad death of Terry. RIP.
Richard missed the opportunity for an incredible story here. This made the press the next day, Terry never told his abduction story before.
He had told it before. I judged that he had said as much as he wanted to. He told the story anyway.
@@Herring1967 thanks for explaining. Heartbreaking 💔
